Description of the story of Maṅgala and Caṇḍī begins. Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: The story of Ṣaṣṭhī has been told to you, O son of Brahmā, as it is found in the scriptures; now listen to the story of Goddess Maṅgalacaṇḍī.
All her worship and related rites, as heard from the mouth of Dharma, are approved by the Vedas and cherished even by the learned.

She who is worshipped is Caṇḍī, and Maṅgala is the great son of the earth; she who is the desired goddess of auspiciousness is also Maṅgalacaṇḍikā.
Maṅgala, descended from Manu, is the lord of the earth with seven continents; his cherished and worshipped goddess is therefore called Maṅgalacaṇḍikā.

In different forms, she is Durgā, the primal nature, the sovereign; she is compassion incarnate, manifest before all, the cherished goddess of women.
She was first worshipped by Śaṅkara, the supreme among the gods, at the terrible slaying of Tripura, prompted by Viṣṇu.

Instructed by Brahmā and Viṣṇu, Śaṅkara praised Durgā; she, appearing in a different form, became Maṅgalacaṇḍī.
She said before Śambhu, 'There is no danger for you, O Lord; the blessed one in the form of a bull, the Lord of all, you shall become.'
I shall become the very embodiment of the power of battle, without doubt, together with Hari, who is the lord of illusion, as your ally, O bearer of the bull-banner.
Slay the demon, the enemy of the gods and the destroyer of their position; having said this, the Goddess vanished and became the power of Śambhu.
With the weapon given by Viṣṇu, the Lord of Umā struck down that demon; O chief of sages, when the demon fell, all the gods and great seers—

By reciting the mantra one hundred thousand times, its perfection is surely attained; now hear, O Brahman, the meditation prescribed in the Vedas and accepted by all.
Meditate on the Goddess as sixteen years old, ever steadfast in youthful beauty, with lips like bimba fruit, lovely teeth, pure, and with a face like an autumn lotus.
