Whoever speaks harsh words to him goes to the realm of Ulmuka; my servant always places a firebrand in that person's mouth.
He is struck on the head with a staff for the measure of a year of hair; then he becomes a widow for seven births.
She, having experienced widowhood, then becomes pure, though afflicted with disease; the Brahmin woman who is enjoyed by a Śūdra goes to a dark pit.
There, she eats in water heated for purification, in darkness, day and night; she dwells, greatly tormented, struck by my messenger.
Immersed in water for purification, she remains there as long as the fourteen Indras; she is born as a crow for a thousand births, as a pig for a hundred births.
As a jackal for a hundred births, as a hen for a hundred births; as a pigeon for seven births, as a monkey for seven births.
After that, she becomes a cāṇḍālī, enjoyed by all in Bhārata; then she becomes a washerwoman, afflicted with consumption, and a prostitute.
Then, afflicted with leprosy, she becomes an oil-maker, then pure; she dwells as a prostitute in a pit, as a drum-player, and is struck with a staff.
A prostitute dwells in a water-hole, a wanton woman in a powder-house; an independent woman in a crushing place, and a bold one in a drying place.
She dwells, tormented, struck by my messenger; always eating excrement and urine for the duration of a Manvantara.
Then one becomes a worm in excrement for a hundred thousand years; after that, purified, a brāhmaṇa may approach a brāhmaṇī, or a kṣatriya a kṣatriyā.
A vaiśya may approach a vaiśyā, and a śūdra a śūdrā; but if one goes to the wife of another of the same varṇa, those people go to the realm of punishment.
Having endured the torments and drunk boiling water, one dwells there for a hundred years; then, purified, he becomes a brāhmaṇa, and after that, the other varṇas likewise.
Women too are purified in this way, so says the Grandfather; a kṣatriya may approach a brāhmaṇī, or a vaiśya a devoted wife.
He who goes to his mother becomes one who has intercourse with his mother, and dwells in the hell called Śūrpa; there, together with the brāhmaṇī, he is devoured by worms shaped like winnowing baskets.
He eats burning urine, is beaten by my messenger, and there he suffers torment as long as the fourteen Indras reign.
For seven births he becomes a boar, then a goat, and after that, purified; but if one, having taken a vow holding tulasī in his hand, does not keep it—
Or if he swears falsely, he goes to the hell called Jvālāmukha; if, holding Gaṅgā water in his hand, he does not keep his vow—
Or if he touches a stone or an image of a deity and does not keep his vow, he goes to Jvālāmukha; likewise, if, having given his right hand in pledge, he does not keep it—
Or if, standing in a temple, he does not keep his vow, he goes to Jvālāmukha; if a twice-born, having touched a brāhmaṇa or a cow, does not keep his vow, he goes to the fire of flames.
If he does not keep his vow, he goes to Jvālāmukha; one who betrays a friend, is ungrateful, or breaks trust—
Or one who gives false testimony, he too goes to Jvālāmukha; all these remain there as long as the fourteen Indras reign.
Likewise, those scorched by burning coals and beaten by my messenger—if a caṇḍāla touches tulasī, after seven births he becomes pure.
If a mleccha touches Gaṅgā water, after five births he becomes pure; if one who touches a stone becomes a worm in excrement, after seven births, O beautiful one—
If one touches an image, he becomes a worm in Brahman; after seven births he is purified; one who gives with the right hand becomes a serpent for seven births.
After that, he becomes a man without Brahman; then, purified; one who speaks falsely in a temple becomes a devala for seven births.
One who touches a brāhmaṇa or others becomes surely born as a tiger; after that, he becomes mute and deaf for three births.
One without a wife, without kin, or without lineage—after that, purified; a betrayer of friends becomes a mongoose, and an ungrateful one a gallinule.
One who betrays trust becomes a tiger for seven births in the land of Bharata; one who gives false testimony becomes a frog for seven births.
He kills seven ancestors and seven descendants of his own line; a twice-born who neglects daily rites becomes dull-witted.
