एताः कामेन कान्ता यो व्रजेद्वै मानवाधमः । स मातृगामी वेदेषु ब्रह्महत्याशतं व्रजेत्
A degraded man who approaches any of these women with desire is, according to the Vedas, a mother-violator and incurs the sin of a hundred Brahmin murders.
अकर्मार्होऽप्यसंस्पृश्यो लोके वेदे च निन्दितः । स याति कुम्भीपाके च महापापी सुदुष्करे
He is unfit for rituals, untouchable, condemned in the world and in the Veda; such a great sinner, extremely wicked, goes to Kumbhīpāka hell.
करोत्यशुद्धां सन्ध्यां वा न सन्ध्यां वा करोति च । त्रिसन्ध्यं वर्जयेद्यो वा सन्ध्याहीनश्च स द्विजः
One who performs the twilight worship impurely, or does not perform it at all, or neglects the three daily twilights—such a twice-born is deprived of the twilight rites.
वैष्णवं च तथा शैवं शाक्तं सौरं च गाणपम् । योऽहङ्कारान्न गृह्णाति मन्त्रं सोऽदीक्षितः स्मृतः
One who, out of pride, does not accept Vaiṣṇava, Śaiva, Śākta, Saura, or Gāṇapatya mantras is considered uninitiated.
प्रवाहमवधिं कृत्वा यावद्धस्तचतुष्टयम् । तत्र नारायणः स्वामी गङ्गागर्भान्तरे वसेत्
Setting the length of the current as far as four hand-spans, there, within the womb of the Ganga, Lord Narayana himself resides.
तत्र नारायणक्षेत्रे मृतो याति हरेः पदम् । वाराणस्यां बदर्यां च गङ्गासागरसङ्गमे
Whoever dies in that Narayana-kshetra attains the abode of Hari; also at Varanasi, Badari, and at the confluence of the Ganga and the ocean.
पुष्करे हरिहरक्षेत्रे प्रभासे कामरूस्थले । हरिद्वारे च केदारे तथा मातृपुरेऽपि च
At Pushkara, the Harihara-kshetra, Prabhasa, Kamarupa, Haridvara, Kedara, and likewise at Matripura,
सरस्वतीनदीतीरे पुण्ये वृन्दावने वने । गोदावर्यां च कौशिक्यां त्रिवेण्यां च हिमाचले
On the sacred bank of the Sarasvati river, in the forest of Vrindavana, in the Godavari, the Kausiki, at the Triveni, and in the Himalayas,
एषु तीर्थेषु यो दानं प्रतिगृह्णाति कामतः । स च तीर्थप्रतिग्राही कुम्भीपाके प्रयाति सः
Whoever, out of desire, accepts gifts at these holy places, that receiver of gifts at the tirthas surely goes to Kumbhipaka.
शूद्रसेवी शूद्रयाजी ग्रामयाजीति कीर्तितः । तथा देवोपजीवी च देवलः परिकीर्तितः
One who serves Shudras, performs sacrifices for Shudras, or is known as a village priest, as well as one who lives off the gods, is called a Devala.
शूद्रपाकोपजीवी यः सूपकार इति स्मृतः । सन्ध्यापूजनहीनश्च प्रमत्तः पतितः स्मृतः
He who lives off food cooked by Shudras is known as a Supakara; one who neglects the worship at twilight, being careless, is considered fallen.
उक्तं सर्वं मया भद्रे लक्षणं वृषलीपतेः । एते महापातकिनः कुम्भीपाकं प्रयान्ति ते । कुण्डान्यन्यानि ये यान्ति निबोध कथयामि ते
O blessed one, I have told you all the marks of the lord of the outcastes; these great sinners go to Kumbhipaka. Now listen as I tell you about those who go to other pits.
नानाकर्मविपाकफलकथनम् धर्मराज उवाच देवसेवां विना साध्वि न भवेत्कर्मकृन्तनम् । शुद्धकर्म शुद्धबीजं नरकश्च कुकर्मणा
Dharmaraja said: Without service to the gods, O virtuous one, there is no cutting off of karma; pure deeds yield pure results, and hell is the fruit of evil deeds.
पुंश्चल्यन्नं च यो भुङ्क्ते योऽस्यां गच्छेत्पतिव्रते । स द्विजः कालसूत्रं च मृतो याति सुदुर्गमम्
A twice-born who eats the food of an adulteress, or who approaches her, after death goes to the extremely difficult Kaalasutra.
शतवर्षं कालसूत्रे स्थिरीभूतो भवेद् ध्रुवम् । तत्र जन्मनि रोगी च ततः शुद्धो भवेद् द्विजः
He remains fixed in Kaalasutra for a hundred years, certainly; in his next birth, he is diseased, and after that, the twice-born becomes purified.
पतिव्रता चैकपतौ द्वितीये कुलटा स्मृता । तृतीये धर्षिणी ज्ञेया चतुर्थे पुंश्चलीत्यपि
A woman who is devoted to one husband is called a pativrata; with a second, she is called a kulata; with a third, she is known as a dharshini; with a fourth, a pumshchali.
वेश्या च पञ्चमे षष्ठे पुङ्गी च सप्तमेऽष्टमे । तत ऊर्ध्वं महावेश्या सास्पृश्या सर्वजातिषु
With a fifth, she is a courtesan; with a sixth, a pungi; with a seventh or eighth, she is a great courtesan, untouchable among all castes.
यो द्विजः कुलटां गच्छेद्धर्षिणीं पुंश्चलीमपि । पुङ्गीं वेश्यां महावेश्यां मत्स्योदे याति निश्चितम्
A twice-born who approaches a kulata, a dharshini, a pumshchali, a pungi, a courtesan, or a great courtesan, certainly goes to Matsyoda.
शताब्दं कुलटागामी धृष्टागामी चतुर्गुणम् । षड्गुणं पुंश्चलीगामी वेश्यागामी गुणाष्टकम्
One who goes to a kulata remains there for a hundred years; one who goes to a dharshini, four times that; to a pumshchali, six times; to a courtesan, eight times.
पुङ्गीगामी दशगुणं वसेत्तत्र न संशयः । महावेश्याकामुकश्च ततो दशगुणं वसेत्
One who goes to a pungi stays there ten times as long, without doubt; and one who is a lover of a great courtesan stays there ten times more than that.
तत्रैव यातनां भुङ्क्ते यमदूतेन ताडितः । तित्तिरिः कुलटागामी धृष्टागामी च वायसः
There he endures torment, struck by the messengers of Yama; one who goes to a kulata becomes a partridge, one who goes to a dharshini becomes a crow.
कोकिलः पुंश्चलीगामी वेश्यागामी वृकः स्मृतः । पुङ्गीगामी सूकरश्च सप्तजन्मनि भारते
One who goes to a pumshchali becomes a cuckoo; one who goes to a courtesan is said to become a wolf; one who goes to a pungi becomes a boar for seven births in Bharata.
महावेश्याप्रगामी च जायते शाल्मलीतरुः । यो भुङ्क्ते ज्ञानहीनश्च ग्रहणे चन्द्रसूर्ययोः
He who indulges in intercourse with prostitutes, or who eats during eclipses of the moon or sun without knowledge, is born as a śālmalī tree.
अरुन्तुदं स यात्येवाप्यन्नमानाब्दमेव च । ततो भवेन्मानवश्चाप्युदरे रोगपीडितः
He goes to Aruntuda and eats food there for a year; after that, he becomes a human afflicted with disease in the belly.
गुल्मयुक्तश्च काणश्च दन्तहीनस्ततः शुचिः । वाक्प्रदत्तां स्वकन्यां च योऽन्यस्मै प्रददाति च
Afflicted with tumors, one-eyed, toothless, then pure; whoever gives his own daughter, promised by word, to another man.
स वसेत्पांसुकुण्डे च तद्भोजी शतवत्सरम् । तद्द्रव्यहारी यः साध्वि पांसुवेष्टे शताब्दकम्
He dwells in a pit of sand, eating from it, for a hundred years; the one who steals such property from a virtuous woman is wrapped in sand for a hundred years.
निवसेच्छरशय्यायां मम दूतेन ताडितः । भक्त्या न पूजयेद्विप्रः शिवलिङ्गं च पार्थिवम्
He resides on a bed of arrows, struck by my messenger; the Brahmin who does not worship the earthly Śiva-liṅga with devotion.
स याति शूलिनः पापाच्छूलप्रोतं सुदारुणम् । स्थित्वा शताब्दं तत्रैव श्वापदः सप्तजन्मसु
He goes, because of sin, to the terrible place pierced by the trident of Śiva; after staying there for a hundred years, he is born as a wild animal for seven births.
ततो भवेद्देवलश्च सप्तजन्म ततः शुचिः । करोति कुण्ठितं विप्रं यद्भिया कम्पते द्विजः
Then he becomes a god for seven births, then pure; whoever causes a Brahmin to tremble out of fear.
प्रकम्पने वसेत्सोऽपि विप्रलोमाब्दमेव च । प्रकोपवदना कोपात् स्वामिनं या च पश्यति
He dwells for a year, trembling, with the hair of a Brahmin; whoever, out of anger, looks at his master with a wrathful face.
