गोमार्गवर्जनं कृत्वा ददाति सस्यमेव वा । तडागे वा तु दुर्गे वा स गोहत्यां लभेद् ध्रुवम्
Whoever, avoiding the cow's path, gives grain in a pond or a fort, certainly incurs the sin of cow-killing.
प्रायश्चित्ते गोवधस्य यः करोति व्यतिक्रमम् । पुत्रलोभादथाज्ञानात्स गोहत्या लभेद् ध्रुवम्
Whoever, out of greed for a son or out of ignorance, neglects the prescribed atonement for cow-killing, certainly incurs the sin of cow-killing.
राजके दैवके यत्नाद् गोस्वामी गां न रक्षति । दुःखं ददाति यो मूढो गोहत्यां स लभेद् ध्रुवम्
A foolish cow-owner who, despite the efforts of the king or the deity, does not protect his cows and causes them suffering, certainly incurs the sin of cow-killing.
प्राणिनो लङ्घयेद्यो हि देवार्चामनलं जलम् । नैवेद्यं पुष्पमन्नं च स गोहत्यां लभेद् ध्रुवम्
Whoever allows living beings to cross over the worship of the deity, fire, or water, or consumes the deity's offerings, flowers, or food, certainly incurs the sin of cow-killing.
शश्वन्नास्तीति यो वादी मिथ्यावादी प्रतारकः । देवद्वेषी गुरुद्वेषी स गोहत्यां लभेद् ध्रुवम्
One who always proclaims 'there is no afterlife,' who speaks falsehoods or deceives, who hates the gods or the guru, certainly incurs the sin of cow-killing.
देवताप्रतिमां दृष्ट्वा गुरुं वा ब्राह्मणं सति । सम्भ्रमान्न नमेद्यो हि स गोहत्या लभेद् ध्रुवम्
Whoever, upon seeing a deity's image, a guru, or a worthy Brāhmaṇa, does not bow with reverence, certainly incurs the sin of cow-killing.
न ददात्याशिषं कोपात्प्रणताय च यो द्विजः । विद्यार्थिने च विद्यां च स गोहत्यां लभेद् ध्रुवम्
A twice-born who, out of anger, does not grant blessings to one who bows, or does not impart knowledge to a seeker of learning, certainly incurs the sin equal to cow slaughter.
गोहत्या विप्रहत्या च कथिता चातिदेशिकी । गम्यां स्त्रियं नृणामेव निबोध कथयामि ते
The sins of cow slaughter and killing a Brahmin have been described, along with their extensions; now listen as I tell you about women who are to be approached or not by men.
स्वस्त्री गम्या च सर्वेषामिति वेदानुशासनम् । अगम्या च तदन्या या चेति वेदविदो विदुः
According to the Vedic injunction, one's own wife is permitted for all; any other woman is considered forbidden—so say those who know the Veda.
सामान्यं कथितं सर्वं विशेषं शृणु सुन्दरि । अत्यगम्या हि या याश्च निबोध कथयामि ताः
The general rule has been stated; now hear the specifics, O beautiful one. I will tell you about those women who are especially forbidden.
शूद्राणां विप्रपत्नी च विप्राणां शूद्रकामिनी । अत्यगम्या च निन्द्या च लोके वेदे पतिव्रते
For Śūdras, the wife of a Brahmin, and for Brahmins, a Śūdra woman, are especially forbidden and condemned in the world, in the Veda, and among chaste women.
शूद्रश्च ब्राह्मणीं गत्वा ब्रह्महत्याशतं लभेत् । तत्समं ब्राह्मणी चापि कुम्भीपाकं लभेद् ध्रुवम्
If a Śūdra approaches a Brahmin woman, he incurs the sin of a hundred Brahmin murders; likewise, a Brahmin woman who does so certainly attains the hell called Kumbhīpāka.
शूद्राणां विप्रपत्नी च विप्राणां शूद्रकामिनी । यदि शूद्रा व्रजेद्विप्रो वृषलीपतिरेव सः
For Śūdras, the wife of a Brahmin, and for Brahmins, a Śūdra woman—if a Brahmin goes to a Śūdra woman, he is indeed considered the husband of an outcaste.
स भ्रष्टो विप्रजातेश्च चाण्डालात्सोऽधमः स्मृतः । विष्ठासमश्च तत्पिण्डो मूत्रं तस्य च तर्पणम्
He falls from the Brahmin caste and is regarded as lower than a Cāṇḍāla; his food is like excrement, and urine is his libation.
न पितॄणां सुराणां च तद्दत्तमुपतिष्ठति । कोटिजन्मार्जितं पुण्यं तस्यार्चात्तपसार्जितम्
Offerings given by such a one do not reach the ancestors or the gods; all merit accumulated over millions of births through worship and austerity is destroyed.
द्विजस्य वृषलीलोभान्नश्यत्येव न संशयः । ब्राह्मणश्च सुरापीतिर्विड्भोजी वृषलीपतिः
A twice-born who, out of desire for an outcaste woman, is utterly ruined—there is no doubt; a Brahmin who drinks liquor, eats excrement, or becomes the husband of an outcaste woman—
तप्तमुद्रादग्धदेहस्तप्तशूलाङ्कितस्तथा । हरिवासरभोजी च कुम्भीपाकं व्रजेद् द्विजः
—whose body is branded with hot marks, who is marked with heated spears, or who eats on the day of Hari (Ekādaśī)—such a twice-born goes to the hell called Kumbhīpāka.
गुरुपत्नीं राजपत्नीं सपत्नीं मातरं ध्रुवम् । सुतां पुत्रवधूं श्वश्रूं सगर्भां भगिनीं सतीम्
The wife of the teacher, the wife of the king, a co-wife, one's own mother, daughter, daughter-in-law, mother-in-law, a pregnant woman, and a virtuous sister—
सहोदरभ्रातृजायां मातुलानीं पितुः प्रसूम् । मातुः प्रसूं तत्स्वसारं भगिनीं भ्रातृकन्यकाम्
—the wife of a uterine brother, the wife of the maternal uncle, the father's sister, the mother's sister, her daughter, one's own sister, and the brother's daughter—
शिष्यां शिष्यस्य पत्नीं च भागिनेयस्य कामिनीम् । भ्रातुः पुत्रप्रियां चैवात्यगम्या आह पद्मजः
—a female disciple, the wife of a disciple, the beloved of a nephew, and the beloved of a brother's son—these are declared by Padmaja as especially forbidden.
एताः कामेन कान्ता यो व्रजेद्वै मानवाधमः । स मातृगामी वेदेषु ब्रह्महत्याशतं व्रजेत्
A degraded man who approaches any of these women with desire is, according to the Vedas, a mother-violator and incurs the sin of a hundred Brahmin murders.
अकर्मार्होऽप्यसंस्पृश्यो लोके वेदे च निन्दितः । स याति कुम्भीपाके च महापापी सुदुष्करे
He is unfit for rituals, untouchable, condemned in the world and in the Veda; such a great sinner, extremely wicked, goes to Kumbhīpāka hell.
करोत्यशुद्धां सन्ध्यां वा न सन्ध्यां वा करोति च । त्रिसन्ध्यं वर्जयेद्यो वा सन्ध्याहीनश्च स द्विजः
One who performs the twilight worship impurely, or does not perform it at all, or neglects the three daily twilights—such a twice-born is deprived of the twilight rites.
वैष्णवं च तथा शैवं शाक्तं सौरं च गाणपम् । योऽहङ्कारान्न गृह्णाति मन्त्रं सोऽदीक्षितः स्मृतः
One who, out of pride, does not accept Vaiṣṇava, Śaiva, Śākta, Saura, or Gāṇapatya mantras is considered uninitiated.
प्रवाहमवधिं कृत्वा यावद्धस्तचतुष्टयम् । तत्र नारायणः स्वामी गङ्गागर्भान्तरे वसेत्
Setting the length of the current as far as four hand-spans, there, within the womb of the Ganga, Lord Narayana himself resides.
तत्र नारायणक्षेत्रे मृतो याति हरेः पदम् । वाराणस्यां बदर्यां च गङ्गासागरसङ्गमे
Whoever dies in that Narayana-kshetra attains the abode of Hari; also at Varanasi, Badari, and at the confluence of the Ganga and the ocean.
पुष्करे हरिहरक्षेत्रे प्रभासे कामरूस्थले । हरिद्वारे च केदारे तथा मातृपुरेऽपि च
At Pushkara, the Harihara-kshetra, Prabhasa, Kamarupa, Haridvara, Kedara, and likewise at Matripura,
सरस्वतीनदीतीरे पुण्ये वृन्दावने वने । गोदावर्यां च कौशिक्यां त्रिवेण्यां च हिमाचले
On the sacred bank of the Sarasvati river, in the forest of Vrindavana, in the Godavari, the Kausiki, at the Triveni, and in the Himalayas,
एषु तीर्थेषु यो दानं प्रतिगृह्णाति कामतः । स च तीर्थप्रतिग्राही कुम्भीपाके प्रयाति सः
Whoever, out of desire, accepts gifts at these holy places, that receiver of gifts at the tirthas surely goes to Kumbhipaka.
शूद्रसेवी शूद्रयाजी ग्रामयाजीति कीर्तितः । तथा देवोपजीवी च देवलः परिकीर्तितः
One who serves Shudras, performs sacrifices for Shudras, or is known as a village priest, as well as one who lives off the gods, is called a Devala.
