त्रिजन्मनि भवेच्छागः कृष्णवर्णस्त्रिजन्मनि । ततः स तालवृक्षश्च ततः शुद्धो भवेन्नरः
For three births he becomes a goat, for three births black-skinned; then he becomes a palm tree, and after that, the man is purified.
धान्यादिसस्यं ताम्बूलं यो हरेत्सुरविप्रयोः । आसनं च तथा तल्पं चूर्णकुण्डे प्रयाति सः
Whoever steals grain, other crops, betel, a seat, or a bed belonging to a god or a Brāhmaṇa, goes to the Cūrṇakuṇḍa.
शताब्दं तत्र निवसेद्यमदूतेन ताडितः । ततो भवेन्मेषजातिः कुक्कुटश्च त्रिजन्मनि
There, beaten by the messengers of Yama, he dwells for a hundred years; then he is born as a sheep, and for three births as a rooster.
ततो भवेद्वानरश्च कासव्याधियुतो भुवि । वंशहीनो दरिद्रश्च स्वल्पायुश्च ततः शुचिः
After that, he is born as a monkey, afflicted with cough and disease on earth; then he is without lineage, poor, and short-lived, and after that, he becomes pure.
करोति चक्रं विप्राणां हृत्वा द्रव्यं च यो जनः । स वसेच्चक्रकुण्डे च शताब्दं दण्डताडितः
Whoever, having stolen property from Brāhmaṇas, makes a wheel (of suffering) for them, must dwell in the Chakrakuṇḍa for a hundred years, beaten with rods.
ततो भवेन्मानवश्च तैलकारस्त्रिजन्मनि । व्याधियुक्तो भवेद्रोगी वंशहीनस्ततः शुचिः
After that, he is born as a human, then as an oil-maker for three births; afflicted with disease, without lineage, and then he becomes pure.
गोधनेषु च विप्रेषु करोति वक्रतां पुमान् । प्रयाति वक्रकुण्डं स तिष्ठेद्युगशतं सति
If a man acts crookedly with cows or Brāhmaṇas, he goes to the Vakrakuṇḍa and remains there for a hundred ages.
ततो भवेत्स वक्राङ्गो हीनाङ्गः सप्तजन्मनि । दरिद्रो वंशहीनश्च भार्याहीनस्ततः शुचिः
After that, he is born with crooked limbs, disabled for seven births; poor, without lineage, without a wife, and then he becomes pure.
ततो भवेद् गृध्रजन्मा त्रिजन्मनि च सूकरः । त्रिजन्मनि बिडालश्च मयूरश्च त्रिजन्मनि
After that, he is born as a vulture, then for three births as a pig, for three births as a cat, and for three births as a peacock.
निषिद्धं कूर्ममांसं च ब्राह्मणो यो हि भक्षति । कूर्मकुण्डे वसेत्सोऽपि शताब्दं कूर्मभक्षितः
If a Brāhmaṇa eats forbidden tortoise meat, he dwells in the Kūrmakuṇḍa for a hundred years, being eaten by tortoises.
ततो भवेत्कूर्मजन्मा त्रिजन्मनि च सूकरः । त्रिजन्मनि बिडालश्च मयूरश्च ततः शुचिः
After that, he is born as a tortoise, for three births as a pig, for three births as a cat, then as a peacock, and after that, he becomes pure.
घृतं तैलादिकं चैव यो हरेत्सुरविप्रयोः । स याति ज्वालाकुण्डं च भस्मकुण्डं च पातकी
Whoever steals ghee, oil, or similar things from gods or Brāhmaṇas, that sinner goes to the Jvālākuṇḍa and the Bhasmakuṇḍa.
तत्र स्थित्वा शताब्दं च स भवेत्तैलपाचितः । सप्तजन्मनि मत्स्यश्च मूषकश्च ततः शुचिः
There, remaining for a hundred years, he is cooked in oil; for seven births he becomes a fish, then a mouse, and after that, he becomes pure.
सुगन्धितैलं धात्रीं वा गन्धद्रव्यान्यदेव वा । भारते पुण्यवर्षे च यो हरेत्सुरविप्रयोः
Whoever steals fragrant oil, emblic myrobalan, or other perfumed substances from gods or Brāhmaṇas in the holy land of Bhārata—
स वसेद्दग्धकुण्डे च भवेद्दग्धो दिवानिशम् । स्वलोममानवर्षं च ततो दुर्गन्धिको भवेत्
He dwells in a pit of fire, being burned day and night; then, for a year, his own hair rains down upon him, and he becomes foul-smelling.
दुर्गन्धिकः सप्तजन्म मृगनाभिस्त्रिजन्मनि । सप्तजन्मसु मन्थानस्ततो हि मानवो भवेत्
For seven births he is foul-smelling, for three births he is born as a musk deer; for seven births he is a churner, and then he becomes a human.
बलेनैव छलेनैव हिंसारूपेण वा सति । बलिष्ठश्च हरेद्भूमिं भारते परपैतृकीम्
If someone, by force, deceit, or violence, seizes ancestral land belonging to another in Bhārata, being powerful,
स वसेत्तप्तसूचिं च भवेत्तापी दिवानिशम् । तप्ततैले यथा जीवो दग्धो भवति सन्ततम्
He dwells on a heated needle, suffering day and night; just as a living being is constantly burned in hot oil.
भस्मसान्न भवत्येव भोगे देही न नश्यति । सप्तमन्वन्तरं पापी सन्तप्तस्तत्र तिष्ठति
He does not become ashes nor does his body perish in that enjoyment; the sinner remains there, tormented, for seven manvantaras.
शब्दं करोत्यनाहारो यमदूतेन ताडितः । षष्टिवर्षसहस्राणि विट्कृमिश्च भवेत्ततः
Without food, he cries out, struck by the messenger of Yama; for sixty thousand years, he becomes a worm in excrement.
ततो भवेद्भूमिहीनो दरिद्रश्च ततः शुचिः । ततः स्वयोनिं सम्प्राप्य शुभं कर्माचरेत्पुनः
Then he is born without land, poor, and then pure; after attaining his own birth, he again performs virtuous deeds.
नानाकर्मविपाकफलवर्णनम् यम उवाच छिनत्ति जीवं खड्गेन दयाहीनः सुदारुणः । नरघाती हन्ति नरमर्थलोभेन भारते
Yama said: One who, devoid of compassion, cruelly slays a living being with a sword, or kills a man out of greed for wealth in Bhārata,
असिपत्रे वसेत्सोऽपि यावदिन्द्राश्चतुर्दश । तेषु यो ब्राह्मणान् हन्ति शतमन्वन्तरं वसेत्
He dwells on a sword-leaf as long as fourteen Indras reign; but one who kills a brāhmaṇa dwells there for a hundred manvantaras.
छिन्नाङ्गः संवसेत् सोऽपि खड्गधारेण सन्ततम् । अनाहारः शब्दमुच्चैर्यमदूतेन ताडितः
With limbs severed, he dwells constantly on the edge of a sword, without food, crying out loudly, struck by the messenger of Yama.
मन्थानः शतजन्मानि शतजन्मानि सूकरः । कुक्कुटः सप्त जन्मानि शृगालः सप्तजन्मसु
For a hundred births he is a churner, for a hundred births a boar; for seven births a rooster, for seven births a jackal.
व्याघ्रश्च सप्त जन्मानि वृकश्चैव त्रिजन्मसु । सप्तजन्मसु मण्डूको यमदूतेन ताडितः
For seven births a tiger, for three births a wolf; for seven births a frog, struck by the messenger of Yama.
स भवेद्भारते वर्षे महिषश्च ततः शुचिः । ग्रामाणां नगराणां वा दहनं यः करोति च
Then, in the land of Bhārata, he becomes a buffalo, and then pure; one who sets fire to villages or cities,
क्षुरधारे वसेत्सोऽपि छिन्नाङ्गस्त्रियुगं सति । ततः प्रेतो भवेत्सद्यो वह्निवक्त्रो भ्रमन्महीम्
He dwells on the edge of a razor, with limbs severed, for three ages; then he immediately becomes a preta, wandering the earth with a mouth of fire.
सप्तजन्मामेध्यभोजी कपोतः सप्तजन्मसु । ततो भवेन्महाशूली मानवः सप्तजन्मनि
For seven births he eats impure food as a pigeon; then, for seven births, he becomes a human with great pain.
सप्तजन्म गलत्कुष्ठी ततः शुद्धो भवेन्नरः । परकर्णे मुखं दत्त्वा परनिन्दां करोति यः
For seven births he is afflicted with leprosy, then he becomes pure; one who, placing his mouth to another's ear, speaks slander.
