सरोवरादुत्थितांश्च नक्रादीन्हन्ति यो नरः । नक्रकण्टकमानाब्दं नक्रकुण्डं प्रयाति सः
Whoever kills crocodiles or other creatures that have emerged from a lake goes to the Crocodile Pit for a period equal to the growth of body hair.
ततो नक्रादिजातीयो भवेन्नक्रादिषु ध्रुवम् । ततः सद्यो विशुद्धो हि दण्डेनैव पुनः पुनः
Thereafter, he is born among crocodiles and similar beings, remaining among them certainly; then, through repeated punishment, he is quickly purified.
वक्षः श्रोणीस्तनास्यञ्च यः पश्यति परस्त्रियाः । कामेन कामुको यो हि पुण्यक्षेत्रे च भारते
Whoever, driven by lust, gazes at the chest, hips, breasts, or mouth of another's wife in the sacred land of Bharata, being a passionate man—
स वसेत्काककुण्डे च काकैः संचूर्णलोचनः । ततः स्वलोममानाब्दं भवेद्दग्धस्त्रिजन्मनि
He dwells in the Crow Pit, his eyes crushed by crows; then, for a period equal to the growth of body hair, he is born as a woman burned in her previous birth.
स्वर्णस्तेयी च यो मूढो भारते सुरविप्रयोः । स च मन्थानकुण्डे वै स्वलोमाब्दं वसेद् ध्रुवम्
The fool who steals gold from a god or a Brahmin in Bharata certainly dwells in the Churning Pit for a period equal to the growth of body hair.
ताडितो यमदूतेन मन्थानैश्छन्नलोचनः । तद्विड्भोजी च तत्रैव ततश्चान्धस्त्रिजन्मनि
Beaten by Yama's messengers, his eyes covered with churning rods, he eats excrement there, and in his next birth, he is born blind.
सप्तजन्म दरिद्रश्च महाक्रूरश्च पातकी । भारते स्वर्णकारश्च स च स्वर्णवणिक् ततः
For seven births, he is poor, extremely cruel, and sinful; in Bharata, he becomes a goldsmith, and then a gold merchant.
यो भारते ताम्रचौरो लोहचौरश्च सुन्दरि । स च स्वलोममानाब्दं बीजकुण्डं प्रयाति सः
O beautiful one, whoever steals copper or iron in Bharata goes to the Seed Pit for a period equal to the growth of body hair.
तत्रैव बीजविड्भोजी बीजैश्च छन्नलोचनः । ताडितो यमदूतेन ततः शुद्धो भवेन्नरः
There, eating seeds and excrement, his eyes covered with seeds, beaten by Yama's messengers, the man is then purified.
भारते देवचौरश्च देवद्रव्यापहारकः । स दुस्तरे वज्रकुण्डे स्वलोमाब्दं वसेद् ध्रुवम्
Whoever steals divine property or takes the wealth of gods in Bharata certainly dwells in the difficult-to-cross Thunderbolt Pit for a period equal to the growth of body hair.
देहदग्धोऽपि तद्वज्रैरनाहारश्च शब्दकृत् । ताडितो यमदूतैश्च ततः शुद्धो भवेन्नरः
Even if his body is burned by those thunderbolts, left without food, making cries, and beaten by Yama's messengers, then the man is purified.
रौप्यगव्यांशुकानां च यश्चौरः सुरविप्रयोः । तप्तपाषाणकुण्डेच स्वलोमाब्दं वसेद् ध्रुवम्
Whoever steals silver, cows, or cloth from gods or Brahmins dwells in the Heated Stone Pit for a period equal to the growth of body hair.
त्रिजन्मनि च कंसोऽपि श्वेतरूपस्त्रिजन्मनि । जन्मैकं श्वेतचिह्नश्च ततोऽन्ये श्वेतपक्षिणः
For three births, he is born as a goose; for three births, he is white in form; for one birth, he bears white marks; after that, he becomes a white bird.
ततो रक्तविकारी च शूली वै मानवो भवेत् । सप्तजन्मसु चाल्पायुस्ततः शुद्धो भवेन्नरः
After that, he becomes a man afflicted with blood disorders and impaled; for seven births, he has a short life, and then the man is purified.
रैतं कांस्यमयं पात्रं यो हरेद्देवविप्रयोः । तीक्ष्णपाषाणकुण्डे च स्वलोमाब्दं वसेन्नरः
Whoever steals a vessel made of bronze from a god or Brahmin dwells in the Sharp Stone Pit for a period equal to the growth of body hair.
स भवेदश्वजातिश्च भारते सप्तजन्मसु । ततोऽधिकाङ्गजातिश्च पादरोगी ततः शुचिः
He is then born as a horse in Bharata for seven births; after that, he is born with extra limbs, then with a foot disease, and finally becomes pure.
पुंश्चल्यन्नं च यो भद्रे पुंश्चलीजीव्यजीविनः । स्वलोममानवर्षं च लालाकुण्डे वसेद् ध्रुवम्
O auspicious one, whoever eats the food of an unchaste woman, or lives by the earnings of such a woman, will certainly dwell in the Lālākuṇḍa for a period measured by the number of his own body hairs.
ताडितो यमदूतेन तद्भोजी तत्र दुःखितः । ततश्चक्षुःशूलरोगी ततः शुद्धः क्रमेण सः
There, beaten by the messengers of Yama, the eater of such food suffers greatly; then he becomes afflicted with eye diseases, and gradually he is purified.
म्लेच्छसेवी मसीजीवी यो विप्रो भारते भुवि । वसेत्स्वलोममानाब्दं मसीकुण्डे स दुःखभाक्
A Brāhmaṇa in the land of Bhārata who serves foreigners or lives by ink (writing for hire) must dwell in the Masīkuṇḍa, suffering, for a period equal to the number of his body hairs.
ताडितो यमदूतेन तद्भोजी तत्र तिष्ठति । ततस्त्रिजन्मनि भवेत्कृष्णवर्णः पशुः सति
Beaten by the messengers of Yama, he remains there eating that (food); then, for three births, he is born as a black-skinned animal, and after that, if he survives, he is purified.
त्रिजन्मनि भवेच्छागः कृष्णवर्णस्त्रिजन्मनि । ततः स तालवृक्षश्च ततः शुद्धो भवेन्नरः
For three births he becomes a goat, for three births black-skinned; then he becomes a palm tree, and after that, the man is purified.
धान्यादिसस्यं ताम्बूलं यो हरेत्सुरविप्रयोः । आसनं च तथा तल्पं चूर्णकुण्डे प्रयाति सः
Whoever steals grain, other crops, betel, a seat, or a bed belonging to a god or a Brāhmaṇa, goes to the Cūrṇakuṇḍa.
शताब्दं तत्र निवसेद्यमदूतेन ताडितः । ततो भवेन्मेषजातिः कुक्कुटश्च त्रिजन्मनि
There, beaten by the messengers of Yama, he dwells for a hundred years; then he is born as a sheep, and for three births as a rooster.
ततो भवेद्वानरश्च कासव्याधियुतो भुवि । वंशहीनो दरिद्रश्च स्वल्पायुश्च ततः शुचिः
After that, he is born as a monkey, afflicted with cough and disease on earth; then he is without lineage, poor, and short-lived, and after that, he becomes pure.
करोति चक्रं विप्राणां हृत्वा द्रव्यं च यो जनः । स वसेच्चक्रकुण्डे च शताब्दं दण्डताडितः
Whoever, having stolen property from Brāhmaṇas, makes a wheel (of suffering) for them, must dwell in the Chakrakuṇḍa for a hundred years, beaten with rods.
ततो भवेन्मानवश्च तैलकारस्त्रिजन्मनि । व्याधियुक्तो भवेद्रोगी वंशहीनस्ततः शुचिः
After that, he is born as a human, then as an oil-maker for three births; afflicted with disease, without lineage, and then he becomes pure.
गोधनेषु च विप्रेषु करोति वक्रतां पुमान् । प्रयाति वक्रकुण्डं स तिष्ठेद्युगशतं सति
If a man acts crookedly with cows or Brāhmaṇas, he goes to the Vakrakuṇḍa and remains there for a hundred ages.
ततो भवेत्स वक्राङ्गो हीनाङ्गः सप्तजन्मनि । दरिद्रो वंशहीनश्च भार्याहीनस्ततः शुचिः
After that, he is born with crooked limbs, disabled for seven births; poor, without lineage, without a wife, and then he becomes pure.
ततो भवेद् गृध्रजन्मा त्रिजन्मनि च सूकरः । त्रिजन्मनि बिडालश्च मयूरश्च त्रिजन्मनि
After that, he is born as a vulture, then for three births as a pig, for three births as a cat, and for three births as a peacock.
निषिद्धं कूर्ममांसं च ब्राह्मणो यो हि भक्षति । कूर्मकुण्डे वसेत्सोऽपि शताब्दं कूर्मभक्षितः
If a Brāhmaṇa eats forbidden tortoise meat, he dwells in the Kūrmakuṇḍa for a hundred years, being eaten by tortoises.
