ततः उच्चैःश्रवाः सप्तजन्मस्वेव ततः शुचि । विषेण जीवनं हन्ति निर्दयो यो हि मानवः
Afterwards, for seven births, he is born as a horse of the Uchchaihshravas type, and then is purified; but the man who mercilessly kills life with poison—
विषकुण्डे च तद्भोजी सहस्राब्दं च तिष्ठति । ततो भवेन्नृघाती च व्रणी च शतजन्मसु
He who eats in a cauldron of poison remains there for a thousand years; then, for a hundred births, he becomes a murderer and one afflicted with sores.
सप्तजन्मसु कुष्ठी च ततः शुद्धो भवेद् धुवम् । दण्डेन ताडयेद् गां हि वृषञ्च वृषवाहकः
For seven births he is a leper, and then is certainly purified; one who strikes a cow or a bull with a stick—
भृत्यद्वारा स्वतन्त्रो वा पुण्यक्षेत्रे च भारते । प्रतप्ते तैलकुण्डेऽग्नौ तिष्ठति स्म चतुर्युगम्
Whether through a servant or by his own hand, even in a holy land of Bharata, he stands in a heated cauldron of oil in fire for four ages.
गवां लोमप्रमाणाब्दं वृषो भवति तत्परम् । कुन्तेन हन्ति यो जीवं वह्निलोहेन हेलया
For as many years as there are hairs on a cow, he becomes a bull in that state; and he who kills a living being with a spear or hot iron, out of contempt—
कुन्तकुण्डे वसेत्सोऽपि वर्षाणामयुतं सति । ततः सुयोनिं सम्प्राप्य चोदरे व्याधिसंयुतः
He dwells in a cauldron of spears for ten thousand years; then, having attained a good womb, he is afflicted with disease in the belly.
जन्मनैकेन क्लेशेन ततः शुद्धो भवेन्नरः । यो भुङ्क्ते च वृथा मांसं मांसलोभी द्विजाधमः
With suffering in a single birth, then the man is purified; but the lowest of twice-born who eats meat without cause, out of greed for flesh—
हरेरनैवेद्यभोजी कृमिकुण्डं प्रयाति सः । स्वलोममानवर्षं च तद्भोजी तत्र तिष्ठति
He who eats the offerings not meant for Vishnu goes to the worm cauldron; he remains there for as many years as there are hairs on his body.
ततो भवेन्म्लेच्छजातिस्त्रिजन्मनि ततो द्विजः । ब्राह्मणः शूद्रयाजी च शूद्रश्राद्धान्नभोजकः
Then he is born in a mleccha family for three births, and after that as a twice-born; a Brahmin who performs sacrifices for Shudras or eats food from a Shudra's funeral offering—
शूद्राणां शवदाही च पूयकुण्डे वसेद् ध्रुवम् । यावल्लोमप्रमाणाब्दं यमदण्डेन सुव्रते
He who burns the corpses of Shudras certainly dwells in a cauldron of pus, for as many years as there are hairs on his body, struck by Yama's rod, O virtuous one.
ताडितो यमदूतेन तद्भोजी तत्र तिष्ठति । ततो भारतमागत्य स शूद्रः सप्तजन्मसु
Struck by the messengers of Yama, he remains there consuming that food; then, coming to Bharata, he is born as a Shudra for seven lifetimes.
महारोगी दरिद्रश्च बधिरो मूक एव च । कृष्णं पद्मं च के यस्य तं सर्पं हन्ति यो नरः
Afflicted with severe disease, poor, deaf, and mute; whoever kills the snake whose lotus and Krishna are present, that man is destroyed.
स्वलोममानवर्षं च सर्पकुण्डं प्रयाति सः । सर्पेण भक्षितः सोऽथ यमदूतेन ताडितः
He goes to the snake pit for a year measured by his own hair; then, eaten by a snake and struck by Yama's messengers.
वसेच्च सर्पविड्भोजी ततः सर्पो भवेद् ध्रुवम् । ततो भवेन्मानवश्च स्वल्पायुर्दद्रुसंयुतः
He dwells eating snake excrement; thereafter, he certainly becomes a snake; then, he becomes a human with little lifespan and afflicted by leprosy.
महाक्लेशेन तन्मृत्युः सर्पेण भक्षिताद् ध्रुवम् । विधिप्रदत्तजीव्यांश्च क्षुद्रजन्तूंश्च हन्ति यः
His death comes with great suffering, certainly after being eaten by a snake; whoever kills small creatures allotted life by fate.
स दंशमशयोः कुण्डे जन्तुमानाब्दमेव च । दिवानिशं भक्षितस्तैरनाहारश्च शब्दवान्
He stays in the pit of biting creatures for a year, being eaten day and night by them, without food, making sounds.
हस्तपादादिबद्धश्च यमदूतेन ताडितः । ततो भवेत्क्षुद्रजन्तुर्जातिश्च यावनी भवेत्
Bound by hands and feet, struck by Yama's messengers; then he becomes a small creature, as long as its species lasts.
ततो भवेन्मानवश्च सोऽङ्गहीनस्ततः शुचिः । यो मूढो मधुमश्नाति हत्वा च मधुमक्षिकाः
Then he becomes a human, but lacking limbs, and pure thereafter; the fool who eats honey after killing honeybees.
स एव गारले कुण्डे जीवमानाब्दकं वसेत् । भक्षितो गरलैर्दग्धो यमदूतेन ताडितः
He dwells alive for a year in a pit of poison; eaten and burned by poisons, struck by Yama's messengers.
ततो हि मक्षिकाजातिस्ततः शुद्धो भवेन्नरः । दण्डं करोत्यदण्ड्ये च विप्रे दण्डं करोति च
Then he becomes of the bee species; thereafter, the man becomes purified; one who punishes the innocent or punishes a Brahmin.
स कुण्डं वज्रदंष्ट्राणां कीटानां याति सत्वरम् । स तल्लोमप्रमाणाब्दं तत्र तिष्ठत्यहर्निशम्
He quickly goes to the pit of insects with diamond-like fangs; he stays there for a year measured by his own hair, day and night.
शब्दकृद्भक्षितस्तैस्तु यमदूतेन ताडितः । करोति रोदनं भद्रे हाहाकारं क्षणे क्षणे
Eaten by those who make noise, struck by Yama's messengers; he cries out, O gentle one, with lamentation at every moment.
पुनः सूकरयोनौ च जायते सप्तजन्मसु । त्रिजन्मनि काकयोनौ ततः शुद्धो भवेन्नरः
Again, he is born in the womb of a pig for seven lifetimes; for three births in the womb of a crow, then the man becomes purified.
अर्थलोभेन यो मूढः प्रजादण्डं करोति सः । वृश्चिकानां च कुण्डं च तल्लोमाब्दं वसेद् ध्रुवम्
The fool who, out of greed for wealth, punishes the people; he certainly dwells in the pit of scorpions for a year measured by his own hair.
ततो वृश्चिकजातिश्च सप्तजन्मसु भारते । ततो नरश्चाङ्गहीनो व्याधिशुद्धो भवेद् ध्रुवम्
Then he becomes of the scorpion species for seven lifetimes in Bharata; thereafter, the man becomes without limbs, and certainly purified from disease.
ब्राह्मणः शस्त्रधारी यो ह्यन्येषां धावको भवेत् । सन्ध्याहीनश्च यो विप्रो हरिभक्तिविहीनकः
A Brahmin who bears weapons or runs for others; a Brahmin who neglects the twilight rituals and lacks devotion to Hari.
स तिष्ठति स्वलोमाब्दं कुण्डेषु च शरादिषु । विद्धः शरादिभिः शश्वत्ततः शुद्धो भवेन्नरः
He stays for a year measured by his own hair in pits among arrows and the like; constantly pierced by arrows and so forth, then the man becomes purified.
कारागारे सान्धकारे प्रणिहन्ति प्रजाश्च यः । प्रमत्तः स्वस्य दोषेण गोलकुण्डं प्रयाति सः
One who, in prison and darkness, harms the people; heedless due to his own fault, he goes to the pit of balls.
स पङ्कतप्ततोयाक्तं सान्धकारं भयङ्करम् । तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्रैश्च कीटैश्च संयुक्तं गोलकुण्डकम्
There is a pit filled with muddy, heated water, enveloped in darkness and terror, swarming with insects bearing sharp fangs—this is the Golakunda.
कीटैर्विद्धो वसेत्तत्र प्रजालोमाब्दमेव च । ततो भवेत्प्रजाभृत्यस्ततः शुद्धो भवेत्क्रमात्
Pierced by those insects, one dwells there for a measure of time equal to the growth of body hair; thereafter, one becomes a servant of the people, and then, gradually, is purified.
