ततो भवेच्च शशको मीनश्च सप्तजन्मसु । त्रिजन्मनि वराहश्च कुक्कुटः सप्तजन्मसु
After that, for seven births he becomes a hare and a fish; for three births, a boar; for seven births, a cock.
एणादयश्च कर्मभ्यस्ततः शुद्धिं लभेद् ध्रुवम् । स्वकन्यापालनं कृत्वा विक्रीणाति च यो नरः
Because of his actions, he is also born as a deer and other animals; then he surely attains purification. A man who, after raising his own daughter, sells her—
अर्थलोभान्महामूढो मांसकुण्डं प्रयाति सः । कन्यालोमप्रमाणाब्दं तद्भोजी तत्र तिष्ठति
That extremely deluded man, out of greed for wealth, goes to the Mamsa-kunda; he remains there, eating its food, for as many years as the number of hairs on the girl's body.
तस्य दण्डप्रहारं च कुर्वन्ति यमकिङ्कराः । मांसभारं मूर्ध्नि कृत्वा रक्तभारं लिहेत्क्षुधा
The servants of Yama strike him with rods; carrying a load of flesh on his head, he licks a mass of blood out of hunger.
ततो हि भारते पापी कन्याविट्कृमिगो भवेत् । षष्टिवर्षसहस्राणि व्याधश्च सप्तजन्मसु
After that, in Bharata, the sinner is born as a worm in the girl's excrement for sixty thousand years, and as a hunter for seven births.
त्रिजन्मनि वराहश्च कुक्कुटः सप्तजन्मसु । मण्डूको हि जलौकाश्च सप्तजन्मसु भारते
For three births, he becomes a boar; for seven births, a cock; for seven births in Bharata, a frog and a leech.
सप्तजन्मसु काकश्च ततः शुद्धिं लभेद् ध्रुवम् । व्रतानामुपवासानां श्राद्धादीनां च सङ्गमे
For seven births, he is a crow; then he surely attains purification. At the time of vows, fasts, and śrāddha rites—
करोति यः क्षौरकर्म सोऽशुचिः सर्वकर्मसु । स च तिष्ठति कुण्डे च नखादीनाञ्च सुन्दरि
Whoever performs shaving at such times is impure in all actions; O beautiful one, he dwells in the Kunda of nails and the like.
तद्दैवदिनमानाब्दं तद्भोजी दण्डताडितः । सकेशं पार्थिवं लिङ्गं यो वार्चयति भारते
He remains there, eating its food and beaten with rods, for as many days as are counted by the gods. Whoever worships a linga made of earth with hair in Bharata—
स तिष्ठति केशकुण्डे मृद्रेणुमानवर्षकम् । तदन्ते यावनीं योनिं प्रयाति हरकोपतः
He stays in the Kesha-kunda for as many years as there are hairs, covered with dust; after that, by Shiva's wrath, he enters the womb of a Yavana woman.
शताब्दाच्छुद्धिमाप्नोति राक्षसः स भवेद् ध्रुवम् । पितॄणां यो विष्णुपदे पिण्डं नैव ददाति च
After a hundred years, he attains purification; he surely becomes a Rakshasa.
स च तिष्ठत्यस्थिकुण्डे स्वलोमाब्दं महोल्बणे । ततः सुयोनिं सम्प्राप्य कुखञ्जः सप्तजन्मसु
Whoever does not offer the rice-ball to the ancestors at Vishnu's abode dwells in the terrible Asthi-kunda for as many years as his own body hair; then, attaining a good birth, he is born lame and crippled for seven births.
भवेन्महादरिद्रश्च ततः शुद्धो हि देहतः । यः सेवते महामूढो गुर्विणीं च स्वकामिनीम्
He who, being greatly deluded, serves a woman who is pregnant or his own lover, becomes extremely poor, though his body is purified.
प्रतप्ते ताम्रकुण्डे च शतवर्षं स तिष्ठति । अवीरान्नं च यो भुङ्क्ते ऋतुस्नातान्नमेव च
He stands for a hundred years in a heated copper cauldron; and he who eats food from the impotent or from a woman in her period, as well.
लोहकुण्डे शताब्दं च स च तिष्ठति तप्तके । स व्रजेद्रजकीं योनिं काकानां सप्तजन्मसु
He stands for a hundred years in a heated iron cauldron; then he goes to the womb of a washerwoman or is born as a crow for seven births.
महाव्रणी दरिद्रश्च ततः शुद्धी भवेन्नरः । यो हि चर्माक्तहस्तेन देवद्रव्यमुपस्मृशेत्
He becomes afflicted with great sores and poverty, and then is purified, who touches divine offerings with a hand smeared with leather.
शतवर्षप्रमाणं च चर्मकुण्डे स तिष्ठति । यः शूद्रेणाभ्यनुज्ञातो भुङ्क्ते शूद्रान्नमेव च
He remains for a hundred years in a cauldron of leather; and he who, having been permitted by a Shudra, eats food of the Shudra.
स च तप्तसुराकुण्डे शताब्दं तिष्ठति द्विजः । ततो भवेच्छूद्रयाजी ब्राह्मणः सप्तजन्मसु
That twice-born, too, stands for a hundred years in a cauldron of heated liquor; then, for seven births, a Brahmin becomes one who performs sacrifices for Shudras.
शूद्रश्राद्धान्नभोजी च ततः शुद्धो भवेद्ध ्रुवम् । वाग्दुष्टः कटुको वाचा ताडयेत्स्वामिनं सदा
He who eats food from a Shudra's funeral offering is then purified in the same way; one who is harsh in speech, always striking his master.
तीक्ष्णकण्टककुण्डे स तद्भोजी तत्र तिष्ठति । ताडितो यमदूतेन दण्डेन च चतुर्गुणम्
Such a one remains in a cauldron filled with sharp thorns, and, struck by the rod of Yama's attendant, receives fourfold punishment.
ततः उच्चैःश्रवाः सप्तजन्मस्वेव ततः शुचि । विषेण जीवनं हन्ति निर्दयो यो हि मानवः
Afterwards, for seven births, he is born as a horse of the Uchchaihshravas type, and then is purified; but the man who mercilessly kills life with poison—
विषकुण्डे च तद्भोजी सहस्राब्दं च तिष्ठति । ततो भवेन्नृघाती च व्रणी च शतजन्मसु
He who eats in a cauldron of poison remains there for a thousand years; then, for a hundred births, he becomes a murderer and one afflicted with sores.
सप्तजन्मसु कुष्ठी च ततः शुद्धो भवेद् धुवम् । दण्डेन ताडयेद् गां हि वृषञ्च वृषवाहकः
For seven births he is a leper, and then is certainly purified; one who strikes a cow or a bull with a stick—
भृत्यद्वारा स्वतन्त्रो वा पुण्यक्षेत्रे च भारते । प्रतप्ते तैलकुण्डेऽग्नौ तिष्ठति स्म चतुर्युगम्
Whether through a servant or by his own hand, even in a holy land of Bharata, he stands in a heated cauldron of oil in fire for four ages.
गवां लोमप्रमाणाब्दं वृषो भवति तत्परम् । कुन्तेन हन्ति यो जीवं वह्निलोहेन हेलया
For as many years as there are hairs on a cow, he becomes a bull in that state; and he who kills a living being with a spear or hot iron, out of contempt—
कुन्तकुण्डे वसेत्सोऽपि वर्षाणामयुतं सति । ततः सुयोनिं सम्प्राप्य चोदरे व्याधिसंयुतः
He dwells in a cauldron of spears for ten thousand years; then, having attained a good womb, he is afflicted with disease in the belly.
जन्मनैकेन क्लेशेन ततः शुद्धो भवेन्नरः । यो भुङ्क्ते च वृथा मांसं मांसलोभी द्विजाधमः
With suffering in a single birth, then the man is purified; but the lowest of twice-born who eats meat without cause, out of greed for flesh—
हरेरनैवेद्यभोजी कृमिकुण्डं प्रयाति सः । स्वलोममानवर्षं च तद्भोजी तत्र तिष्ठति
He who eats the offerings not meant for Vishnu goes to the worm cauldron; he remains there for as many years as there are hairs on his body.
ततो भवेन्म्लेच्छजातिस्त्रिजन्मनि ततो द्विजः । ब्राह्मणः शूद्रयाजी च शूद्रश्राद्धान्नभोजकः
Then he is born in a mleccha family for three births, and after that as a twice-born; a Brahmin who performs sacrifices for Shudras or eats food from a Shudra's funeral offering—
शूद्राणां शवदाही च पूयकुण्डे वसेद् ध्रुवम् । यावल्लोमप्रमाणाब्दं यमदण्डेन सुव्रते
He who burns the corpses of Shudras certainly dwells in a cauldron of pus, for as many years as there are hairs on his body, struck by Yama's rod, O virtuous one.
