शरकुण्डं शूलकुण्डं खड्गकुण्डं च भीषणम् । गोलकुण्डं नक्रकुण्डं काककुण्डं शुचास्पदम्
The pit of arrows, the pit of spears, the dreadful pit of swords; the pit of balls, the pit of crocodiles, the pit of crows, a place of torment.
मन्थानकुण्डं बीजकुण्डं वज्रकुण्डं च दुःसहम् । तप्तपाषाणकुण्डं च तीक्ष्णपाषाणकुण्डकम्
The pit of churning, the pit of seeds, the pit of thunderbolts, unbearable; the pit of heated stones, and the pit of sharp stones.
लालाकुण्डं मसीकुण्डं चूर्णकुण्डं तथैव च । चक्रकुण्डं वक्रकुण्डं कूर्मकुण्डं महोल्बणम्
The pit of saliva, the pit of ink, the pit of powder likewise; the pit of wheels, the pit of curves, the pit of tortoises, exceedingly fierce.
ज्वालाकुण्डं भस्मकुण्डं दग्धकुण्डं शुचिस्मिते । तप्तसूचीमसिपत्रं क्षुरधारं सूचीमुखम्
The pit of flames, the pit of ashes, the pit of burning, O fair-smiled one; the pit of heated needles, sword-blades, razor-edges, and needle-mouths.
गोकामुख नक्रमुखं गजदंशं च गोमुखम् । कुम्भीपाकं कालसूत्रं मत्स्योदं कृमितन्तुकम्
The pit of cow-mouths, crocodile-mouths, elephant bites, and cow-mouths; the Kumbhipaka, Kaalasutra, Matsyoda, and the pit of worm-threads.
पांसुभोज्यं पाशवेष्टं शूलप्रोतं प्रकम्पनम् । उल्कामुखमन्धकूपं वेधनं ताडनं तथा
The pit where one eats earth, is bound with ropes, is impaled on stakes, and is shaken; the pit of meteors, the dark well, piercing, and beating as well.
जालरन्ध्रं देहचूर्णं दलनं शोषणं कषम् । शूर्पं ज्वालामुखं चैव धूमान्धं नागवेष्टनम्
The pit of netted holes, the pit of body-powdering, crushing, drying, and scraping; the winnowing basket, the flaming mouth, the smoke-blinded, and the pit of serpent-binding.
कुण्डान्येतानि सावित्रि पापिनां क्लेशदानि च । नियुतैः किङ्करगणै रक्षितानि च सन्ततम्
These are the pits, O Savitri, that bring suffering to sinners, and are always guarded by countless hosts of servants.
दण्डहस्तैः पाशहस्तैर्मदमत्तैर्भयङ्करैः । शक्तिहस्तैर्गदाहस्तैरसिहस्तैः सुदारुणैः
With staffs in hand, with nooses in hand, intoxicated and terrifying; with spears, with maces, with swords, exceedingly fierce.
तमोयुक्तैर्दयाहीनैर्निवार्यैश्च न सर्वतः । तेजस्विभिश्च निःशङ्कैराताम्रपिङ्गलोचनैः
Endowed with darkness, devoid of compassion, impossible to restrain from all sides; radiant, fearless, with coppery and tawny eyes.
योगयुक्तैः सिद्धियुक्तैर्नानारूपधरैर्भटैः । आसन्नमृत्युभिर्दृष्टैः पापिभिः सर्वजीविभिः
United with yoga, endowed with powers, warriors assuming various forms; seen as those near death, sinful, and all living beings.
स्वकर्मनिरतैः सर्वैः शाक्तैः सौरैश्च गाणपैः । अदृश्यैः पुण्यकृद्भिश्च सिद्धैर्योगिभिरेव च
All engaged in their own actions—followers of Shakti, of Surya, and of Gana; invisible, doers of virtue, accomplished ones, and yogis as well.
स्वधर्मनिरतैर्वापि विततैर्वा स्वतन्त्रकैः । बलवद्भिश्च निःशङ्कैः स्वप्नदृष्टैश्च वैष्णवैः
Either devoted to their own duty or widespread and independent; powerful, fearless, and those seen in dreams, as well as Vaishnavas.
एतत्ते कथितं साध्वि कुण्डसंख्यानिरूपणम् । येषां निवासो यत्कुण्डे निबोध कथयामि ते
O virtuous one, this has been told to you: the enumeration of the kundas. Listen, I will tell you in which kunda each resides.
इति श्रीमद्देवीभागवते महापुराणेऽष्टादशसाहस्र्यां संहितायां नवमस्कन्धे नारायणनारदसंवादे सावित्र्युपाख्याने कुण्डसंख्यानिरूपणं नाम द्वात्रिंशोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the thirty-second chapter, 'Enumeration of the Kundas,' in the narrative of Savitri, in the dialogue between Narayana and Narada, in the ninth book of the glorious Devi Bhagavata Mahapurana, comprising eighteen thousand verses.
नानाकर्मविपाकफलकथनम् धर्मराज उवाच हरिसेवारतः शुद्धो योगसिद्धो व्रती सति । तपस्वी ब्रह्मचारी च न याति नरकं ध्रुवम्
Description of the results of various actions. Dharmaraja said: One who is devoted to serving Hari, pure, accomplished in yoga, steadfast in vows, ascetic, and celibate, certainly does not go to hell.
कटुवाचा बान्धवांश्च बललेपेन यो नरः । दग्धान्करोति बलवान् वह्निकुण्डं प्रयाति सः
A man who, with harsh speech and by force, burns his relatives, being powerful, goes to the fiery kunda.
स्वगात्रलोममानाब्दं तत्र स्थित्वा हुताशने । पशुयोनिमवाप्नोति रौद्रदग्धां त्रिजन्मनि
Having remained there for a year, equal to the measure of his own body hair, in the fire; he attains an animal birth, fierce and burned, for three lifetimes.
ब्राह्मणं तृषितं तप्तं क्षुधितं गृहमागतम् । न भोजयति यो मूढस्तप्तकुण्डं प्रयाति सः
A foolish person who does not feed a Brahmin who is thirsty, exhausted, hungry, and has come to his house, goes to the heated kunda.
तत्र तल्लोममानं च वर्षं स्थित्वा च दुःखदे । तप्तस्थले वह्नितल्पे पक्षी च सप्तजन्मसु
There, remaining for a year, equal to the measure of his own body hair, in great suffering; on the heated ground, on a bed of fire, he becomes a bird for seven births.
रविवारे च संक्रान्त्याममायां श्राद्धवासरे । वस्त्राणां क्षारसंयोगं करोति केवलं नरः
On Sundays, at the solstice, at the new moon, or on the day of ancestral rites, if a man mixes alkaline substances with clothes only,
स याति क्षारकुण्डं च सूत्रमानाब्दमेव च । स व्रजेद्रजकीं योनिं सप्तजन्मसु भारते
He goes to the alkaline kunda, for a year equal to the measure of thread; he enters the washerman's birth for seven lifetimes in Bharata.
मूलप्रकृतिनिन्दां यः कुरुते मानवाधमः । वेदनिन्दां शास्त्रनिन्दां पुराणानां तथैव च
The lowest of men who insults the primal nature, who insults the Vedas, the scriptures, and likewise the Puranas,
ब्रह्मविष्णुशिवादीनां तथा निन्दापरो जनः । गौरीवाण्यादिदेवीनां तथा निन्दापरो जनः
And those who are intent on insulting Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and others; and those who are intent on insulting Gauri, Vani, and other goddesses,
ते सर्वे निरये यान्ति तस्मिन्कुण्डे भयानके । नातः परतरं कुण्डं दुःखदं तु भविष्यति
All of them go to the hell, to that terrifying kunda; there will be no kunda more painful than that.
तत्र स्थित्वानेककल्पं सर्पयोनिं व्रजेत्पुनः । देवीनिन्दापराधस्य प्रायश्चित्तं न विद्यते
There, remaining for countless ages, he again attains the serpent birth; for the offense of insulting the goddess, there is no expiation.
स्वदत्तां परदत्तां वा वृत्तिं च सुरविप्रयोः । षष्टिवर्षसहस्राणि विट्कुण्डं च प्रयाति सः
Whoever takes for their livelihood what was given by themselves or by another, from the gods or Brahmins, goes to the pit of excrement for sixty thousand years.
तावन्त्येव च वर्षाणि विड्भोजी तत्र तिष्ठति । षष्टिवर्षसहस्राणि विट्कृमिश्च पुनर्भुवि
There, for the same number of years, he remains eating excrement; then, for sixty thousand years, he is reborn on earth as a worm in excrement.
परकीयतडागे च तडागं यः करोति च । उत्सजेद्दैवदोषेण मूत्रकुण्डं प्रयाति सः
Whoever constructs a pond in another's pond, or abandons it due to fate, goes to the pit of urine.
तद्रेणुमानवर्षं च तद्भोजी तत्र तिष्ठति । पुनः पूर्णशताब्दं च स वृषो भारते भवेत्
There, for as many years as the dust of that pond, he remains eating that; then, for a full hundred years, he becomes a bull in India.
