तस्यार्धं शिबिकादाने फलमेव लभेद् ध्रुवम् । यो ददाति भक्तियुक्तो हरये दोलमन्दिरम्
By giving a palanquin, one certainly obtains half that fruit; whoever, with devotion, gives a swing-temple to Hari—
विष्णुलोके वसेत्सोऽपि यावन्मन्वन्तरं शतम् । राजमार्गं सौधयुक्तं यः करोति पतिव्रते
He dwells in the world of Vishnu for a hundred ages of Manu; whoever constructs a royal road with mansions, O virtuous one—
वर्षाणामयुतं सोऽपि शक्रलोके महीयते । ब्राह्मणेभ्योऽथ देवेभ्यो दाने समफलं लभेत्
He is honored in the world of Indra for ten thousand years; by giving to Brahmins or to the gods, one obtains equal fruit.
यद्धि दत्तं च तद्भुङ्क्ते न दत्तं नोपतिष्ठते । भुक्त्वा स्वर्गादिजं सौख्यं पुण्यवाञ्जन्म भारते
Whatever is given, that is enjoyed; what is not given does not remain; after enjoying the happiness born of heaven, the meritorious one is born in Bharata.
लभेद्विप्रकुलेष्वेव क्रमेणैवोत्तमादिषु । भारते पुण्यवान्विप्रो भुक्त्वा स्वर्गादिकं फलम्
He is born in the line of Brahmins, successively in the best families; in Bharata, the meritorious Brahmin, after enjoying the fruit of heaven and so on—
पुनः सोऽपि भवेद्विप्रश्चैवं च क्षत्रियादयः । क्षत्रियो वाथ वैश्यो वा कल्पकोटिशतेन च
Again becomes a Brahmin, and likewise the Kshatriyas and others; whether Kshatriya or Vaishya, even after a hundred million aeons—
तपसा ब्राह्मणत्वं च न प्राप्नोति श्रुतौ श्रुतम् । नाभुक्तं क्षीयते कर्म कल्पकोटिशतैरपि
By austerity, one does not attain Brahminhood, as is heard in the scriptures; unexperienced karma does not perish, even in a hundred million aeons.
अवश्यमेव भोक्तव्यं कृतं कर्म शुभाशुभम् । देवतीर्थसहायेन कायव्यूहेन शुध्यति । एतत्ते कथितं किञ्चित् किं भूयः श्रोतुमिच्छसि
Indeed, one must experience the results of actions, good or bad; with the help of deities and holy places, the body is purified. Thus, I have told you a little—what more do you wish to hear?
यमेन कर्मविपाककथनम् सावित्र्युवाच प्रयान्ति स्वर्गमन्यं च येनैव कर्मणा यम । मानवाः पुण्यवन्तश्च तन्मे व्याख्यातुमर्हसि
Savitri said: By what actions do men, through Yama, attain heaven or other realms? O worthy one, please explain this to me, especially regarding those who are virtuous.
धर्मराज उवाच अन्नदानं च विप्राय यः करोति च भारते । अन्नप्रमाणवर्षं च शिवलोके महीयते
Dharmaraja said: Whoever gives food to a Brahmin in Bharata, and gives according to his means, is honored in Shiva's world for as many years as the measure of food given.
अन्नदानं महादानमन्येभ्योऽपि करोति यः । अन्नदानप्रमाणं च शिवलोके महीयते
Whoever gives the great gift of food, even more than other gifts, is honored in Shiva's world for as many years as the quantity of food given.
अन्नदानात्परं दानं न भूतं न भविष्यति । नात्र पात्रपरीक्षा स्यान्न कालनियमः क्वचित्
There has never been, nor will there ever be, a gift greater than the gift of food; in this, there is no need to examine the recipient, nor is there any restriction of time.
देवेभ्यो ब्राह्मणेभ्यो वा ददाति चासनं यदि । महीयते विष्णुलोके वर्षाणामयुतं सति
If one offers a seat to the gods or to Brahmins, he is honored in Vishnu's world for ten thousand years.
यो ददाति च विप्राय दिव्यां धेनुं पयस्विनीम् । तल्लोममानवर्षं च विष्णुलोके महीयते
Whoever gives to a Brahmin a divine cow that yields milk is honored in Vishnu's world for as many years as there are hairs on the cow.
चतुर्गुणं पुण्यदिने तीर्थे शतगुणं फलम् । दानं नारायणक्षेत्रं फलं कोटिगुणं भवेत्
On auspicious days, the fruit of giving is fourfold; at a sacred place, it is a hundredfold; and if given at Narayana's holy site, the reward becomes ten million times greater.
गां यो ददाति विप्राय भारते भक्तिपूर्वकम् । वर्षाणामयुतं चैव चन्द्रलोके महीयते
Whoever gives a cow with devotion to a Brahmin in Bharata is honored in the world of the Moon for ten thousand years.
यश्चोभयमुखीदानं करोति ब्राह्मणाय च । तल्लोममानवर्षं च विष्णुलोके महीयते
Whoever gives a cow that yields on both sides to a Brahmin is honored in Vishnu's world for as many years as there are hairs on the cow.
यो ददाति ब्राह्मणाय श्वेतच्छत्रं मनोहरम् । वर्षाणामयुतं सोऽपि मोदते वरुणालये
Whoever gives a Brahmin a beautiful white umbrella enjoys happiness in Varuna's abode for ten thousand years.
विप्राय पीडिताङ्गाय वस्त्रयुग्मं ददाति च । महीयते वायुलोके वर्षाणामयुतं सति
Whoever gives a pair of garments to a Brahmin who is suffering in body is honored in Vayu's world for ten thousand years.
यो ददाति ब्राह्मणाय शालग्रामं सवस्त्रकम् । महीयते स वैकुण्ठे यावच्चन्द्रदिवाकरौ
Whoever gives a Shalagrama stone with cloth to a Brahmin is honored in Vaikuntha as long as the Moon and Sun endure.
यो ददाति ब्राह्मणाय दिव्यां शय्यां मनोहराम् । महीयते चन्द्रलोके यावच्चन्द्रदिवाकरौ
Whoever gives a Brahmin a divine and delightful bed is honored in the world of the Moon as long as the Moon and Sun endure.
यो ददाति प्रदीपं च देवेभ्यो ब्राह्मणाय च । यावन्मन्वन्तरं सोऽपि वह्निलोके महीयते
Whoever gives a lamp to the gods or to a Brahmin is honored in the world of Fire for as long as a manvantara lasts.
करोति गजदानं च यदि विप्राय भारते । यावदिन्द्रो नरस्तावदिन्द्रस्यार्धासने वसेत्
If one gives an elephant to a Brahmin in Bharata, he dwells on half of Indra's throne for as long as Indra reigns.
भारते योऽश्वदानं च करोति ब्राह्मणाय च । मोदते वारुणे लोके यावदिन्द्राश्चतुर्दश
Whoever gives a horse to a Brahmin in Bharata enjoys happiness in Varuna's world for the duration of fourteen Indras.
प्रकृष्टां शिबिकां यो हि ददाति ब्राह्मणाय च । मोदते वारुणे लोके यावदिन्द्राश्चतुर्दश
Whoever gives a splendid palanquin to a Brahmin enjoys happiness in Varuna's world for the duration of fourteen Indras.
प्रकृष्टां वाटिका यो हि ददाति ब्राह्मणाय च । महीयते वायुलोके यावन्मन्वन्तरं सति
Whoever gives a fine garden to a Brahmin is honored in Vayu's world for as long as a manvantara lasts.
यो ददाति च विप्राय व्यजनं श्वेतचामरम् । महीयते वायुलोके वर्षाणामयुतं ध्रुवम्
Whoever gives to a Brahmin a fan made of white yak tail is surely honored in the world of the wind-gods for ten thousand years.
धान्यं रत्नं यो ददाति चिरञ्जीवी भवेत्सुधीः । दाता ग्रहीता तौ द्वौ च ध्रुवं वैकुण्ठगामिनौ
He who gives grain or jewels becomes long-lived and wise; both the giver and the receiver certainly attain Vaikuntha.
सततं श्रीहरेर्नाम भारते यो जपेन्नरः । स एव चिरजीवी च ततो मृत्युः पलायते
Whoever constantly chants the name of Shri Hari in the land of Bharata lives long, and from him death flees.
यो नरो भारते वर्षे दोलनं कारयेत्सुधीः । पूर्णिमारजनीशेषे जीवन्मुक्तो भवेन्नरः
A wise man who arranges for the swinging (of the deity) in the land of Bharata, on the night of the full moon, becomes liberated while still alive.
