Hearing the account of Shankhacuda's death, Shiva, expert in true knowledge, went himself to the battlefield with his attendants, O Narada.
Shankhacuda, seeing Shiva, descended from his chariot and bowed with utmost devotion, prostrating himself on the ground.
Having bowed to him, he quickly ascended his chariot, donned his armor at once, and took up his formidable bow.
In ancient times, the battle between Shiva and the demon lasted a full hundred years, but neither gained victory nor suffered defeat, O Brahman.
Both the Blessed Lord and the demon laid down their weapons; Shankhacuda stood on his chariot, and the Bull-bannered One on his bull.
A hundred of the demons were revived; those who had died in battle, Shambhu, the Lord, restored to life.
At that moment, an aged Brahmin, greatly afflicted, came to the battlefield and spoke to the lord of demons.
The aged Brahmin said: 'O king of kings, grant me alms now, for I am a Brahmin; you are the giver of all wealth, give me what I desire in my heart.'
'To me, who am old, without desire, and now thirsty, you shall give; afterwards, I will tell you—do this truly before me.'
The king, with a gracious face, said 'Om'; and, desiring the armor, replied with great cunning, 'I am one who seeks armor.'
Hearing that, Hari took up the divine armor and, assuming the form of Shankhachuda, went to Tulasi.
Having gone there, by his maya he accomplished the act of union; then Shambhu took up his trident against the demon.
That trident was like the blazing fire of summer midday or the flames of cosmic dissolution—impossible to withstand, unconquerable, unfailing, and the destroyer of enemies.
Radiant like a discus, the essence of all weapons and missiles, it was unbearable and terrifying even for Shiva and Keshava and others.
A thousand bows in length, a hundred hands in span, living, of the form of Brahma, eternal, and indescribable.
Sufficient by his own play to destroy the entire universe, he hurled it, having measured, at Shankhachuda, O Narada.
The king, laying aside his bow, fixed his mind in devotion on the lotus feet of Shri Krishna, and entered into meditation, assuming the yogic posture.
The trident, spinning, fell upon the demon, and by play reduced him and his chariot to ashes.
The king, assuming a divine form—a youthful cowherd, two-armed, holding a flute, adorned with jeweled ornaments—
Entered a vehicle fashioned from the finest jewels, surrounded by countless cowherds, descended from Goloka, and went to the city.
Having arrived, he bowed his head to Radha and Krishna, O sage, and with devotion worshipped their lotus feet in the forest of Vrindavan during the rasa dance.
Seeing Sudama, those two, with faces beaming with joy, embraced him tightly in their arms, overwhelmed with supreme love.
Then the shell swiftly went to him with reverence, and from the bones of Shankhachuda arose the conch species.
In various forms, eternally pure through the worship of the gods, the water of the conch is praised as supremely pleasing to the gods.
Wherever there is water from the conch, pure as the waters of sacred fords, except for Shiva, there Lakshmi is firmly established.
He who bathes in conch water is as if bathed in all sacred fords; the conch is the abode of Hari—wherever there is a conch, there is Hari.
There, too, dwells Lakshmi, and all inauspiciousness is driven away, especially by the sound of the conch from women and Shudras.
If Lakshmi is frightened or angered, she departs from that place; and Shiva, having slain the demon, went to Shiva-loka.
Mounted upon the bull and surrounded by his attendants, Shiva was filled with joy; the gods, united with supreme bliss, returned to their own realms.
Drums resounded in heaven, Gandharvas and Kinnaras sang; a continuous shower of flowers fell upon Shiva, and the gods along with eminent sages praised him.
