त्रिपुरैः सह युद्धं च मयापि च पुरा कृतम् । सर्वेश्वर्याः सर्वमातुः प्रकृत्याश्च बभूव ह
In ancient times, I too fought a battle together with the Tripuras; all this occurred through the power of the Supreme Lady, the Mother of all, and of Nature herself.
सह शुम्भादिभिः पूर्वं समरः परमाद्भुतः । पार्षदप्रवरस्त्वं च कृष्णस्य परमात्मनः
Previously, there was a most wondrous battle with Shumbha and the others; and you are the foremost attendant of Krishna, the Supreme Self.
ये ये हताश्च दैतेया नहि केऽपि त्वया समाः । का लज्जा महती राजन् मम युद्धे त्वया सह
All those Daityas who were slain—none are your equals; O King, what great shame would there be for me in battle with you?
सुराणां शरणस्यैव प्रेषितश्च हरेरहो । देहि राज्यं च देवानामिति मे निश्चितं वचः
Alas, I was sent by Hari as the refuge of the gods; my firm word is this: 'Give the kingdom to the gods.'
युद्धं वा कुरु मत्सार्धं वाग्व्यये किं प्रयोजनम् । इत्युक्त्वा शङ्करस्तत्र विरराम च नारद । उत्तस्थौ शङ्खचूडश्च ह्यमात्यैः सह सत्वरम्
Either fight with me, or what is the use of further words? Having said this, Shankara fell silent there, O Narada; and Shankhacuda quickly rose together with his ministers.
कालीशङ्खचूडयुद्धवर्णनम् श्रीनारायण उवाच शिवं प्रणम्य शिरसा दानवेन्द्रः प्रतापवान् । समारुरोह यानं च सहामात्यैः स सत्वरः
Description of the battle between Kali and Shankhacuda. Shri Narayana said: Bowing his head to Shiva, the mighty lord of the Daityas swiftly mounted his chariot together with his ministers.
शिवः स्वसैन्यं देवांश्च प्रेरयामास सत्वरम् । दानवेन्द्रः ससैन्यश्च युद्धारम्भे बभूव ह
Shiva quickly mobilized his own army and the gods; and the lord of the Daityas, with his army, stood ready at the start of the battle.
स्वयं महेन्द्रो युयुधे सार्धं च वृषपर्वणा । भास्करो युयुधे विप्रचित्तिना सह सत्वरः
Indra himself fought together with Vrishaparvan; the Sun fought swiftly with Vipracitti.
दम्भेन सह चन्द्रश्च चकार परमं रणम् । कालस्वरेण कालश्च गोकर्णेन हुताशनः
The Moon engaged in a fierce battle with Dambha; Kala fought with Kalasvara, and Agni with Gokarna.
कुबेरः कालकेयेन विश्वकर्मा मयेन च । भयङ्करेण मृत्युश्च संहारेण यमस्तथा
Kubera fought with Kalakeya, Vishvakarma with Maya; terrifying Mrityu with Samhara, and Yama as well.
विकङ्कणेन वरुणश्चञ्चलेन समीरणः । बुधश्च घृतपृष्ठेन रक्ताक्षेण शनैश्चरः
Varuna fought with Vikanaka, Vayu with Chanchala; Budha with Ghritapristha, and Shani with Raktaksha.
जयन्तो रत्नसारेण वसवो वर्चसां गणैः । अश्विनौ च दीप्तिमता धूम्रेण नलकूबरः
Jayanta fought with Ratnasara, the Vasus with the hosts of Varcasa; the Ashvins, shining, with Dhumra, and Nalakubara.
धुरन्धरेण धर्मश्च उषाक्षेण च मङ्गलः । शोभाकरेण वै भानुः पिठरेण च मन्मथः
Dharma fought with Dhurandhara, Mangala with Ushaksha; Bhanu, the radiant one, with Shobhakara, and Manmatha with Pithara.
गोधामुखेन चूर्णेन खड्गेन च ध्वजेन च । काञ्चीमुखेन पिण्डेन धूमेण सह नन्दिना
Godhamukha fought with Churna, Khadga with Dhvaja; Kanchimukha with Pinda, and Dhumena with Nandi.
विश्वेन च पलाशेनादित्याद्या युयुधुः परे । एकादश च रुद्रा वै एकादशभयङ्करैः
Vishva fought with Palasha, and the Adityas and others fought with their counterparts; the eleven Rudras with eleven terrifying opponents.
महामारी च युयुधे चोग्रचण्डादिभिः सह । नन्दीश्वरादयः सर्वे दानवानां गणैः सह
Mahamari fought with the fierce Ugracanda and others; all the Nandishvaras fought with the hosts of the Daityas.
युयुधुश्च महायुद्धे प्रलयेऽपि भयङ्करे । वटमूले च शम्भुश्च तस्थौ काल्या सुतेन च
They all fought in that great and dreadful battle, even as the end of the world approached; and Shambhu stood beneath the banyan tree with Kali and his son.
सर्वे च युयुधुः सैन्यसमूहाः सततं मुने । रत्नसिंहासने रम्ये कोटिभिर्दानवैः सह
O sage, all the hosts of armies constantly fought; on the splendid jeweled throne, together with countless Daityas.
उवास शङ्खचूडश्च रत्नभूषणभूषितः । शङ्करस्य च ये योधा दानवैश्च पराजिताः
Shankhacuda, adorned with jeweled ornaments, remained, and the warriors of Shankara who had been defeated by the Danavas as well.
देवाश्च दुद्रुवुः सर्वे भीताश्च क्षतविग्रहाः । चकार कोपं स्कन्दश्च देवेभ्यश्चाभयं ददौ
All the gods fled, wounded and afraid; Skanda grew angry and granted safety to the gods.
बलं च स्वर्गणानां च वर्धयामास तेजसा । सोऽयमेकश्च युयुधे दानवानां गणैः सह
By his energy, he increased the strength and brilliance of the gods; he alone fought together with the hosts of Danavas.
अक्षौहिणीनां शतकं समरे च जघान सः । असुरान्पातयामास काली कमललोचना
In battle, he struck down a hundred divisions of troops; Kali, lotus-eyed, caused the Asuras to fall.
पपौ रक्तं दानवानामतिकुद्धा ततः परम् । दशलक्षगजेन्द्राणां शतलक्षं च कोटिशः
Then, exceedingly enraged, she drank the blood of the Danavas; she seized by the crore the ten million lordly elephants, hundreds of thousands at a time.
समादायैकहस्तेन मुखे चिक्षेप लीलया । कबन्धानां सहस्रं च ननर्त समरे मुने
With one hand she gathered them and playfully threw them into her mouth; in battle, O sage, she danced with a thousand headless bodies.
स्कन्दस्य शरजालेन दानवाः क्षतविग्रहाः । भीताश्च दुद्रुवुः सर्वे महारणपराक्रमाः
Struck and wounded by Skanda’s showers of arrows, all the mighty Danavas, though valiant in the great war, fled in fear.
वृषपर्वा विप्रचित्तिर्दम्भश्चापि विकङ्कणः । स्कन्देन सार्धं युयुधुस्ते सर्वे विक्रमेण च
Vrishaparvan, Vipracitti, Dambha, and Vikanaka—all of them fought with Skanda, displaying great valor.
महामारी च युयुधे न बभूव पराङ्मुखी । बभूवुस्ते च संक्षुब्धाः स्कन्दस्य शक्तिपीडिताः
Mahāmārī also fought, never turning her face from battle; they became agitated, afflicted by Skanda’s power.
न दुद्रुवुर्भयात्स्वर्गे पुष्पवृष्टिर्बभूव ह । स्कन्दस्य समरं दृष्ट्वा महारौद्रं समुल्बणम्
They did not flee in fear; in heaven, a shower of flowers fell as they beheld Skanda’s battle, fierce and terrible.
दानवानां क्षयकरं यथा प्राकृतिको लयः । राजा विमानमारुह्य चकार बाणवर्षणम्
It was destructive to the Danavas, like the cosmic dissolution; the king ascended his chariot and released a shower of arrows.
नृपस्य शरवृष्टिश्च घनस्य वर्षणं यथा । महाघोरान्धकारश्च वह्न्युत्थानं बभूव च
The king’s shower of arrows was like the downpour of a cloud; a terrible darkness arose, and fire blazed forth.
