श्रीशैलोत्तरभागे च गन्धमादनदक्षिणे । पञ्चयोजनविस्तीर्णा दैर्घ्ये शतगुणा तथा
To the north of Śrīśaila and south of Gandhamādana, it stretches five yojanas wide and a hundred times as long.
शुद्धस्फटिकसङ्काशा भारते च सुपुण्यदा । शाश्वती जलपूर्णा च पुष्पभद्रा नदी शुभा
In Bhārata, the blessed Puṣpabhadrā river, ever pure and full of water, shines like clear crystal and bestows great merit.
लवणाब्धिप्रिया भार्या शश्वत्सौभाग्यसंयुता । शरावतीमिश्रिता च निर्गता सा हिमालयात्
She is the beloved wife of the salt ocean, always endowed with good fortune, mingled with the Śarāvatī, and flows forth from the Himalayas.
गोमतीं वामतः कृत्वा प्रविष्टा पश्चिमोदधौ । तत्र गत्वा शङ्खचूडो ददर्श चन्द्रशेखरम्
Passing the Gomati on her left, she enters the western ocean; there Śaṅkhacūḍa went and beheld Candraśekhara.
वटमूले समासीनं सूर्यकोटिसमप्रभम् । कृत्वा योगासनं दृष्ट्वा मुद्रायुक्तं च सस्मितम्
He saw him seated at the foot of the banyan tree, shining like ten million suns, sitting in yogic posture, with mudrās, and smiling.
शुद्धस्फटिकसङ्काशं ज्वलन्तं ब्रह्मतेजसा । त्रिशलपट्टिशधरं व्याघ्रचर्माम्बरं वरम्
He appeared like pure crystal, blazing with the radiance of Brahman, holding a trident and spear, and clad in a tiger skin.
भक्तमृत्युहरं शान्तं गौरीकान्तं मनोहरम् । तपसां फलदातारं दातारं सर्वसम्पदाम्
He who removes the death of devotees, who is peaceful, beloved of Gauri, captivating, the giver of the fruits of austerities, and the bestower of all prosperity.
आशुतोषं प्रसन्नास्यं भक्तानुग्रहकातरम् । विश्वनाथं विश्वबीजं विश्वरूपं च विश्वजम्
Easily pleased, with a gracious face, eager to show favor to devotees, Lord of the universe, the seed of the universe, the form of the universe, and born of the universe.
विश्वम्भरं विश्ववरं विश्वसंहारकारकम् । कारणं कारणानां च नरकार्णवतारणम्
The supporter of the universe, the best in the universe, the cause of the dissolution of the universe, the cause of all causes, and the one who ferries across the ocean of hell.
ज्ञानप्रदं ज्ञानबीजं ज्ञानानन्दं सनातनम् । अवरुह्य विमानाच्च तं दृष्ट्वा दानवेश्वरः
The giver of knowledge, the seed of knowledge, the eternal bliss of knowledge—having descended from his celestial chariot, the lord of the Daityas beheld him.
सर्वैः सार्धं भक्तियुक्तः शिरसा प्रणनाम सः । वामतो भद्रकालीं च स्कन्दं च तत्पुरः स्थितम्
Together with all, filled with devotion, he bowed his head; to his left was Bhadrakali, and before him stood Skanda.
आशिषं च ददौ तस्मै काली स्कन्दश्च शङ्करः । उत्तस्थुरागतं दृष्ट्वा सर्वे नन्दीश्वरादयः
Kali, Skanda, and Shankara each gave him blessings; seeing him arrive, all the attendants of Nandi and others stood up.
परस्परं च भाषन्ते चक्रुस्तत्र च साम्प्रतम् । राजा कृत्वा च सम्भाषामुवास शिवसन्निधौ
They spoke among themselves and made arrangements there; the king, having exchanged greetings, remained in the presence of Shiva.
प्रसन्नात्मा महादेवो भगवांस्तमुवाच ह । महादेव उवाच विधाता जगतां ब्रह्मा पिता धर्मस्य धर्मवित्
With a pleased heart, the great god, the Blessed Lord, spoke to him: Mahadeva said: Brahma, the creator of the worlds, is the father and knower of dharma.
मरीचिस्तस्य पुत्रश्च वैष्णवाश्चापि धार्मिकः । कश्यपश्चापि तत्पुत्रो धर्मिष्ठश्च प्रजापतिः
His son is Marichi, and the virtuous Vaishnava; Kasyapa, his son, is a most righteous lord of creatures.
दक्षः प्रीत्या ददौ तस्मै भक्त्या कन्यास्त्रयोदश । तास्वेका च दनुः साध्वी तत्सौभाग्यविवर्धिता
Daksha, out of affection and devotion, gave him thirteen daughters; among them, one was the virtuous Danu, who increased his good fortune.
चत्वारिंशद्दनोः पुत्रा दानवास्तेजसोल्बणाः । तेष्वेको विप्रचित्तिश्च महाबलपराक्रमः
Danu had forty sons, powerful Danavas; among them, one was Vipracitti, of great strength and valor.
तत्पुत्रो धार्मिको दम्भो विष्णुभक्तो जितेन्द्रियः । जजाप परमं मन्त्रं पुष्करे लक्षवत्सरम्
His son was the righteous Dambha, a devotee of Vishnu, self-controlled; he recited the supreme mantra at Pushkara for a hundred thousand years.
शुक्राचार्यं गुरुं कृत्वा कृष्णस्य परमात्मनः । तदा त्वां तनयं प्राप परं कृष्णपरायणम्
Taking Shukracharya as his guru, devoted to Krishna, the Supreme Self, he then obtained you as a son, supremely devoted to Krishna.
पुरा त्वं पार्षदो गोपो गोपेष्वपि सुधार्मिकः । अधुना राधिकाशापाद्भारते दानवेश्वरः
Formerly, you were an attendant, a cowherd, most righteous among the cowherds; now, by the curse of Radhika, you are lord of the Daityas on earth.
आब्रह्मस्तम्बपर्यन्तं तुच्छं मेने च वैष्णवः । सालोक्यसार्ष्टिसायुज्यसामीप्यं च हरेरपि
The Vaishnava considered everything from Brahma down to a blade of grass as insignificant, and even the states of sharing the world, opulence, union, or nearness to Hari.
दीयमानं न गृह्णन्ति वैष्णवाः सेवनं विना । ब्रह्मत्वममरत्वं वा तुच्छं मेने च वैष्णवः
Vaishnavas do not accept even the granting of these, without service; he considered Brahmahood or immortality as insignificant.
इन्द्रत्वं वा मनुत्वं वा न मेने गणनासु च । कृष्णभक्तस्य ते किं वा देवानां विषये भ्रमे
He did not regard Indrahood or Manuhood as worthy of consideration; what value is there for you, a devotee of Krishna, in the domains of the gods?
देहि राज्यं च देवानां मत्प्रीतिं रक्ष भूमिप । सुखं स्वराज्ये त्वं तिष्ठ देवास्तिष्ठन्तु वै पदे
Grant the kingdom of the gods and preserve my favor, O king; dwell happily in your own sovereignty, and let the gods remain in their own stations.
अलं भूतविरोधेन सर्वे कश्यपवंशजाः । यानि कानि च पापानि ब्रह्महत्यादिकानि च
Enough of hostility toward beings, all you descendants of Kashyapa; whatever sins there are, including the killing of a Brahmin—
ज्ञातिद्रोहस्य पापानि कलां नार्हन्ति षोडशीम् । स्वसम्पदां च हानिं च यदि राजेन्द्र मन्यसे
The sins of betraying one's kin do not amount even to a sixteenth part of those; and if you consider the loss of your own wealth—
सर्वावस्था च समतां केषां याति च सर्वदा । ब्रह्मणश्च तिरोभावो लये प्राकृतिके सदा
In all conditions, equanimity is attained by some at all times; and the dissolution of Brahma always occurs at the time of cosmic dissolution.
आविर्भावः पुनस्तस्य प्रभावादीश्वरेच्छया । ज्ञानवृद्धिश्च तपसा स्मृतिलोपश्च निश्चितम्
His manifestation happens again by the power and will of the Lord; growth in knowledge comes through austerity, and certainly, loss of memory as well.
करोति सृष्टिं ज्ञानेन स्रष्टा सोऽपि क्रमेण च । परिपूर्णतमो धर्मः सत्ये सत्याश्रये सदा
He creates the world through knowledge, and even the creator does so in due order; the most complete form of righteousness always rests upon truth and the foundation of truth.
त्रिभागः सोऽपि त्रेतायां द्विभागो द्वापरे स्मृतः । एकभागः कलौ पूर्वं तदंशश्च कमेण च
That righteousness is in three parts in the Treta age, remembered as two parts in the Dvapara, and as one part at first in Kali, and then its portion gradually diminishes.
