विरजां च नदीरूपां मां ज्ञात्वा च तिरोहितम् । पुनर्जगाम सा दृष्ट्वा स्वालयं सखिभिः सह
Recognizing me as the river Virajā and perceiving my disappearance, she returned to her own abode together with her companions.
मां दृष्ट्वा मन्दिरे देवी सुदाम्ना सहितं पुरा । भृशं सा भर्त्सयामास मौनीभूतं च सुस्थिरम्
When the goddess saw me in the temple with Sudāmā, she severely rebuked me, remaining silent and steady.
तच्छ्रुत्वासहमानश्च सुदामा तां चुकोप ह । स च तां भर्त्सयामास कोपेन मम सनिधौ
Hearing this, Sudāmā could not endure it and became angry with her; in my presence, he reproached her out of wrath.
तच्छ्रुत्वा कोपयुक्ता सा रक्तपङ्कजलोचना । बहिष्कर्तुं चकाराज्ञां संत्रस्तं मम संसदि
Hearing this, she, filled with anger and her eyes reddened like lotus petals, ordered that he be expelled, frightened in my assembly.
सखीलक्षं समुत्तस्थौ दुर्वारं तेजसोल्बणम् । बहिश्चकार तं तूर्णं जल्पन्तं च पुनः पुनः
All her companions rose up, their energy unstoppable and intense; they quickly expelled him, who kept speaking repeatedly.
सा च तत्ताडनं तासां श्रुत्वा रुष्टा शशाप ह । याहि रे दानवीं योनिमित्येवं दारुणं वचः
Hearing of their striking him, she became enraged and cursed, uttering harsh words: 'Go, take birth in a demoness's womb.'
तं गच्छन्तं शपन्तं च रुदन्तं मां प्रणम्य च । वारयामास तुष्टा सा रुदती कृपया पुनः
As he departed, cursing and weeping, he bowed to me; she, pleased and weeping out of compassion, restrained him again.
हे वत्स तिष्ठ मा गच्छ क्व यासीति पुनः पुनः । समुच्चार्य च तत्पश्चाज्जगाम सा च विक्लवम्
'O child, stay, do not go, where will you go?' she repeatedly called out, and afterwards departed in distress.
गोप्यश्च रुरुदुः सर्वा गोपाश्चापि सुदुःखिताः । ते सर्वे राधिका चापि तत्पश्चाद् बोधिता मया
All the cowherd women wept, and the cowherds were deeply afflicted; then I consoled them all, including Rādhikā.
आयास्यति क्षणार्धेन कृत्वा शापस्य पालनम् । सुदामंस्त्वमिहागच्छेत्युक्त्वा सा च निवारिता
'He will return within half a moment, after fulfilling the curse,' I said, and thus Sudāmā was restrained.
गोलोकस्य क्षणार्धेन चैकं मन्वन्तरं भवेत् । पृथिव्यां जगतां धातरित्येव वचनं ध्रुवम्
In Goloka, half a moment is equal to one Manvantara on earth; this is a certain statement, O sustainer of the worlds.
इत्येवं शङ्खचूडश्च पुनस्तत्रैव यास्यति । महाबलिष्ठो योगेशः सर्वमायाविशारदः
Thus, Śaṅkhacūḍa will return there again, exceedingly powerful, master of yoga, and expert in all forms of illusion.
मम शूलं गृहीत्वा च शीघ्रं गच्छत भारतम् । शिवः करोतु संहारं मम शूलेन रक्षसः
Taking my trident, quickly go to Bhārata; let Śiva accomplish the destruction of the demon with my trident.
ममैव कवचं कण्ठे सर्वमङ्गलकारकम् । बिभर्ति दानवः शश्वत्संसारे विजयी ततः
The demon always wears my auspicious armor on his neck; thus he is victorious in worldly existence.
तस्मिन् ब्रह्मन् स्थिते चैव न कोऽपि हिंसितुं क्षमः । तद्याचनां करिष्यामि विप्ररूपोऽहमेव च
O Brahman, while he remains thus, no one is able to harm him; I myself will request it, taking the form of a Brahmin.
सतीत्वहानिस्तत्पत्न्या यत्र काले भविष्यति । तत्रैव काले तन्मृत्युरिति दत्तो वरस्त्वया
When his wife's chastity is lost at that time, then at that very moment his death will occur, as the boon was granted by you.
तत्पत्न्याश्चोदरे वीर्यमर्पयिष्यामि निश्चितम् । तत्क्षणे चैव तन्मृत्युर्भविष्यति न संशयः
I will certainly deposit my seed in his wife's womb; at that instant, his death will occur, without doubt.
पश्चात्सा देहमुत्सज्य भविष्यति मम प्रिया । इत्युक्त्वा जगतां नाथो ददौ शूलं हराय च
Afterwards, she will abandon her body and become my beloved; having spoken thus, the Lord of the worlds gave the trident to Hara.
शूलं दत्त्वा ययौ शीघ्रं हरिरभ्यन्तरे मुदा । भारतं च ययुर्देवा ब्रह्यरुद्रपुरोगमाः
Having given the trident, Hari quickly entered inside with joy; and the gods, led by Brahma and Rudra, went to Bharata.
शङ्खचूडेन सह देवानां सङ्ग्रामोद्योगवर्णनम् श्रीनारायण उवाच ब्रह्मा शिवं संनियोज्य संहारे दानवस्य च । जगाम स्वालयं तूर्णं यथास्थानं सुरोत्तमाः
Description of the preparations for battle between Shankhachuda and the gods. Shri Narayana said: Brahma, having appointed Shiva for the destruction of the demon, swiftly went to his own abode, and the best of the gods returned to their respective places.
चन्द्रभागानदीतीरे वटमूले मनोहरे । तत्र तस्थौ महादेवो देवविस्तारहेतवे
On the charming bank of the river Chandrabhaga, beneath a banyan tree, there Mahadeva stood, for the sake of the gods' cause.
दूतं कृत्वा चित्ररथं गन्धर्वेश्वरमीप्सितम् । शीघ्रं प्रस्थापयामास शङ्खचूडान्तिकं मुदा
Appointing Chitraratha, the lord of the Gandharvas, as his messenger, he joyfully sent him quickly to Shankhachuda.
सर्वेश्वराज्ञया शीघ्रं ययौ तन्नगरं परम् । महेन्द्रनगरोत्कृष्टं कुबेरभवनाधिकम्
By the command of the Lord of all, he swiftly went to that supreme city, surpassing even Mahendra's city and Kubera's palace.
पञ्चयोजनविस्तीर्णं दैर्घ्ये तद् द्विगुणं भवेत् । स्फटिकाकारमणिभिर्निर्मितं यानवेष्टितम्
It was five yojanas wide and twice as long, built of crystal-like jewels, encircled by vehicles.
सप्तभिः परिखाभिश्च दुर्गमाभिः समन्वितम् । ज्वलदग्निनिभैः शश्वत्कल्पितं रत्नकोटिभिः
It was fortified with seven moats, difficult to cross, always adorned with blazing, fire-like, countless jewels.
युक्तं च वीथीशतकैर्मणिवेदिविचित्रितैः । परितो वणिजां सौधैर्नानावस्तुविराजितैः
It was furnished with hundreds of streets, adorned with gem-studded platforms, and surrounded by the mansions of merchants, resplendent with various goods.
सिन्दूराकारमणिभिर्निर्मितैश्च विचित्रितैः । भूषितं भूषितैर्दिव्यैराश्रमैः शतकोटिभिः
It was decorated with vermilion-colored jewels, beautifully crafted, and adorned with countless divine hermitages.
गत्वा ददर्श तन्मध्ये शङ्खचूडालयं परम् । अतीव वलयाकारं यथा पूर्णेन्दुमण्डलम्
Having entered, he saw in the midst of it the supreme abode of Shankhachuda, exceedingly circular, like the full moon's disk.
ज्वलदग्निशिखाक्ताभिः परिखाभिश्चतसृभिः । तद्दुर्गमं च शत्रूणामन्येषां सुगमं सुखम्
It was made difficult for enemies by four moats filled with blazing tongues of fire, yet easy and pleasant for others.
अत्युच्चैर्गगनस्पर्शिमणिशृङ्गविराजितम् । राजितं द्वादशद्वारैर्द्वारपालसमन्वितम्
It shone with jewel peaks touching the sky, exceedingly high, and was adorned with twelve gates, each with its own gatekeeper.
