देवोद्याने नन्दने च चित्रचन्दनकानने । चम्पकानां केतकीनां माधवीनां च माधवे
In the divine Nandana garden, in the forest of variegated sandalwood, among champaka, ketaki, and madhavi flowers in spring.
कुन्दानां मालतीनां च कुमुदाम्भोजकानने । कल्पवृक्षे कल्पवृक्षे पारिजातवने वने
In the groves of kunda, malati, and water-lilies, beneath wish-fulfilling trees, and in the parijata forests.
निर्जने काञ्चने स्थाने धन्ये काञ्चनपर्वते । काञ्चीवने किञ्जलके कञ्चुके काञ्चनाकरे
In solitary golden places, on the blessed golden mountain, in the golden forest, in the golden thicket, and in the golden mine.
पुष्पचन्दनतल्पेषु पुंस्कोकिलरुतश्रुते । पुष्पचन्दनसंयुक्तः पुष्पचन्दनवायुना
On flower and sandalwood beds, listening to the calls of male cuckoos, surrounded by flower-sandalwood and fanned by flower-sandalwood breezes.
कामुक्या कामुकः कामात्स रेमे रामया सह । न हि तृप्तो दानवेन्द्रस्तृप्तिं नैव जगाम सा
The passionate one, driven by desire, enjoyed union with Rāma; yet the lord of the Dānavas was never satisfied, nor did she attain contentment.
हविषा कृष्णवर्त्मेव ववृधे मदनस्तयोः । तया सह समागत्य स्वाश्रमं दानवस्ततः
Like fire growing with oblations, passion increased between them; after uniting with her, the Dānava returned to his own hermitage.
रम्यं क्रीडालयं गत्वा विजहार पुनः पुनः । एवं स बुभुजे राज्यं शङ्खचूडः प्रतापवान्
He went to a delightful pleasure-house and sported there again and again; thus the mighty Śaṅkhacūḍa enjoyed his kingdom.
एकमन्वन्तरं पूर्णं राजराजेश्वरो महान् । देवानामसुराणां च दानवानां च सन्ततम्
That great sovereign of kings ruled for a full Manvantara, continually over the gods, Asuras, and Dānavas.
गन्धर्वाणां किन्नराणां राक्षसानां च शान्तिदः । हृताधिकारा देवाश्च चरन्ति भिक्षुका यथा
He brought peace to the Gandharvas, Kinnaras, and Rākṣasas; the gods, deprived of power, wandered about like beggars.
ते सर्वेऽतिविषण्णाश्च प्रजग्मुर्ब्रह्मणः सभाम् । वृत्तान्तं कथयामासू रुरुदुश्च भृशं मुहुः
All of them, deeply distressed, went to Brahmā's assembly; they recounted the events and wept bitterly again and again.
तदा ब्रह्मा सुरैः सार्धं जगाम शङ्करालयम् । सर्वेशं कथयामास विधाता चन्द्रशेखरम्
Then Brahmā, along with the gods, went to the abode of Śaṅkara; the Creator told all to Candraśekhara, the Lord of all.
ब्रह्मा शिवश्च तैः सार्धं वैकुण्ठं च जगाम ह । दुर्लभं परमं धाम जरामृत्युहरं परम्
Brahmā and Śiva, together with them, went to Vaikuṇṭha, the supreme and rare abode, which removes old age and death.
सम्प्राप च वरं द्वारमाश्रमाणां हरेरहो । ददर्श द्वारपालांश्च रत्नसिंहासनस्थितान्
They reached the excellent gateway of Hari's hermitages; there they saw the gatekeepers seated on jeweled thrones.
शोभितान्पीतवस्त्रैश्च रत्नभूषणभूषितान् । वनमालान्वितान्सर्वान् श्यामसुन्दरविग्रहान्
Adorned with yellow garments and jeweled ornaments, all wore garlands of forest flowers and had beautiful dark forms.
शङ्खचक्रगदापद्मधरांश्चैव चतुर्भुजान् । सस्मितान्स्मेरवक्त्रास्यान्पद्मनेत्रान्मनोहरान्
They held conch, discus, mace, and lotus, each with four arms; smiling, with radiant faces and lotus-like, captivating eyes.
ब्रह्मा तान्कथयामास वृत्तान्तं गमनार्थकम् । तेऽनुज्ञां च ददुस्तस्मै प्रविवेश तदाज्ञया
Brahmā told them the purpose of their visit; they granted permission, and by their command he entered within.
एवं षोडश द्वाराणि निरीक्ष्य कमलोद्भवः । देवैः सार्धं तानतीत्य प्रविवेश हरेः सभाम्
Thus, seeing the sixteen gates, the lotus-born one, along with the gods, passed through them and entered Hari's assembly.
देवर्षिभिः परिवृतां पार्षदैश्च चतुर्भुजैः । नारायणस्वरूपैश्च सर्वैः कौस्तुभभूषितैः
Surrounded by divine sages and four-armed attendants, all in the form of Nārāyaṇa and adorned with the Kaustubha gem.
नवेन्दुमण्डलाकारां चतुरस्रां मनोहराम् । मणीन्द्रहारनिर्माणां हीरासारसुशोभिताम्
The assembly was charming, four-sided, shaped like a new moon's disc, constructed with necklaces of chief jewels and shining with streams of diamonds.
अमूल्यरत्नखचितां रचितां स्वेच्छया हरेः । माणिक्यमालाजालाभां मुक्तापङ्क्तिविभूषिताम्
Inlaid with priceless gems, fashioned by Hari's own will, it resembled a network of ruby garlands and was adorned with rows of pearls.
मण्डितां मण्डलाकारै रत्नदर्पणकोटिभिः । विचित्रैश्चित्ररेखाभिर्नानाचित्रविचित्रिताम्
Adorned with circular arrangements of jeweled mirrors, decorated with wondrous and intricate designs of many kinds.
पद्मरागेन्द्ररचितां रुचिरां मणिपङ्कजैः । सोपानशतकैर्युक्तां स्यमन्तकविनिर्मितैः
Beautifully made with lotus-jewels by the king of Padmarāgas, equipped with hundreds of stairways crafted by Syamantaka.
पट्टसूत्रग्रन्थियुक्तैश्चारुचन्दनपल्लवैः । इन्द्रनीलस्तम्भवर्यैर्वेष्टितां सुमनोहराम्
Adorned with silk threads and knots, with lovely sandalwood leaves, and encircled by splendid pillars of blue sapphire, most enchanting.
सद्रत्नपूर्णकुम्भानां समूहैश्च समन्विताम् । पारिजातप्रसूनानां मालाजालैर्विराजिताम्
Graced by groups of golden vessels filled with precious gems, and radiant with garlands of pārijāta blossoms.
कस्तूरीकुङ्कुमारक्तैः सुगन्धिचन्दनद्रुमैः । सुसंस्कृतां तु सर्वत्र वासितां गन्धवायुना
Exquisitely prepared everywhere with fragrant sandalwood trees tinged red with musk and saffron, perfumed by gentle breezes.
विद्याधरीसमूहानां नृत्यजालैर्विराजिताम् । सहस्रयोजनायामां परिपूर्णां च किङ्करैः
Resplendent with the dances of hosts of celestial vidyādharīs, stretching a thousand yojanas and completely filled with attendants.
ददर्श श्रीहरिं ब्रह्मा शङ्करश्च सुरैः सह । वसन्तं तन्मध्यदेशे यथेन्दुं तारकावृतम्
There, Brahmā and Śrī Hari, along with Śaṅkara and the gods, beheld him dwelling in the center, like the moon surrounded by stars.
अमूल्यरत्ननिर्माणचित्रसिंहासने स्थितम् । किरीटिनं कुण्डलिनं वनमालाविभूषितम्
Seated upon a wondrous throne crafted from priceless jewels, crowned, adorned with earrings, and decorated with a garland of forest flowers.
चन्दनोक्षितसर्वाङ्गं बिभ्रतं केलिपङ्कजम् । पुरतो नृत्यगीतं च पश्यन्तं सस्मितं मुदा
His entire body anointed with sandalwood paste, holding a lotus of play, watching the dance and song before him, smiling with delight.
शान्तं सरस्वतीकान्तं लक्ष्मीधृतपदाम्बुजम् । लक्ष्म्या प्रदत्तं ताम्बूलं भुक्तवन्तं सुवासितम्
Peaceful, beloved of Sarasvatī, with Lakṣmī at his lotus feet, having enjoyed the fragrant betel offered by Lakṣmī.
