शिवलिङ्गं शिवामर्चां यश्चार्पयति भूतले । शतमन्वन्तरं यावत्कृमिभक्षः स तिष्ठति
Whoever places a Śiva-liṅga or an image of Śiva on the earth remains as worm-food for a hundred manvantaras.
शङ्खं यन्त्रं शिलातोयं पुष्पं च तुलसीदलम् । यश्चार्पयति भूमौ च स तिष्ठेन्नरके ध्रुवम्
He who places a conch, a yantra, a stone, water, flowers, or tulasī leaves on the ground certainly remains in hell.
जपमालां पुष्पमालां कर्पूरं रोचनं तथा । यो मूढश्चार्पयेद्भूमौ स याति नरकं ध्रुवम्
The fool who places a rosary, a garland of flowers, camphor, or yellow pigment on the ground certainly goes to hell.
भूमौ चन्दनकाष्ठं च रुद्राक्षं कुशमूलकम् । संस्थाप्य भूमौ नरके वसेन्मन्वन्तरावधि
He who places sandalwood, rudrākṣa beads, or kuśa roots on the ground dwells in hell until the end of a manvantara.
पुस्तकं यज्ञसूत्रं च भूमौ संस्थापयेन्नरः । न भवेद्विप्रयोनौ च तस्य जन्मान्तरे जनिः
If a man places a book or a sacred thread on the ground, he is not born in a brāhmaṇa family in his next birth.
ब्रह्महत्यासमं पापमिह वै लभते ध्रुवम् । ग्रन्धियुक्तं यज्ञसूत्रं पूज्यं च सर्ववर्णकैः
He certainly incurs a sin equal to killing a brāhmaṇa by placing a sacred thread with a knot, which is to be worshipped by all castes, on the ground.
यज्ञं कृत्वा तु यो भूमिं क्षीरेण न हि सिञ्चति । स याति तप्तभूमिं च सन्तप्तः सप्तजन्मसु
He who, after performing a sacrifice, does not sprinkle the ground with milk, goes to the heated earth and suffers for seven births.
भूकम्पे ग्रहणे यो हि करोति खननं भुवः । जन्मान्तरे महापापो ह्यङ्गहीनो भवेद् ध्रुवम्
He who digs the earth during an earthquake or eclipse certainly becomes a great sinner and is born disabled in another life.
भवनं यत्र सर्वेषां भूमिस्तेन प्रकीर्तिता । काश्यपी कश्यपस्येयमचला स्थिररूपतः
That which is the dwelling place of all is called earth; this is Kāśyapī, the daughter of Kaśyapa, unshakable in her stable form.
विश्वम्भरा धारणाच्चानन्तानन्तस्वरूपतः । पृथिवी पृथुकन्यात्वाद्विस्तृतत्वान्महामुने
She is called Viśvambharā because she supports all, Anantā because of her endless forms, and Pṛthivī, the broad one, because of her vastness, O great sage.
गङ्गोपाख्यानवर्णनम् नारद उवाच
The narration of the story of Gaṅgā.
भारते भारतीशापात्सा जगाम सुरेश्वरी
Nārada said: Because of the curse of Bhāratī, the goddess of the gods went to Bhārata.
कथं कुत्र युगे केन प्रार्थिता प्रेरिता पुरा
How, where, in which age, and by whom was she formerly invoked or inspired?
श्रीनारायण उवाच तस्य भार्या च वैदर्भी शैब्या च द्वे मनोहरे
Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: His wives were Vaidarbhī and Śaibyā, both exceedingly beautiful.
तत्पत्न्यामेकपुत्रश्च बभूव सुमनोहरः
From one wife, he had a single son, who was most handsome.
अन्या चाऽऽराधयामास शंकरं पुत्र कामुकी
The other, desiring a son, worshipped Śaṃkara.
गते शताब्दे पूर्णे च मांसपिंडं सुषाव सा
When a full hundred years had passed, she gave birth to a lump of flesh.
शंभुर्ब्राह्मणरूपेण तत्समीपं जगाम ह
Śaṃbhu, in the form of a brāhmaṇa, came near her.
सर्वे बभूवुः पुत्राश्च महाबलपराक्रमाः
All became sons, mighty and valiant.
कपिलस्य मुनेः शापाद्बभूवुर्भस्मसाच्च ते 9.11.
By the curse of the sage Kapila, they were reduced to ashes.
तपश्चकाराऽसमंजो गंगानयनकारणात्
Asamañja performed austerities for the purpose of bringing the Gaṅgā.
अंशुमांस्तस्य तनयो गंगानयनकारणात्
Aṃśumān, his son, also sought to bring the Gaṅgā.
भगीरथस्तस्य पुत्रो महाभागवतः सुधीः
Bhagīratha, his son, was a great devotee and wise.
तपः कृत्वा लक्षवर्षं गंगानयनकारणात्
He performed austerities for a hundred thousand years to bring the Gaṅgā.
द्विभुजं मुरलीहस्तं किशोरगोपवेषिणम्
He saw the two-armed one, holding a flute, appearing as a youthful cowherd.
स्वेच्छामयं परं ब्रह्म परिपूर्णतमं प्रभुम्
He is the Supreme Brahman, self-willed, the most complete Lord.
निर्लिप्तं साक्षिरूपं च निर्गुणं प्रकृतेः परम्
Unattached, witness-like, without qualities, beyond nature.
वह्निशुद्धांशुकाधानं रलभूषणभूषितम्
Clad in garments purified by fire, adorned with various ornaments.
लीलया च वरं प्राप वांछितं वंशता रणम्
By his play, he obtained the desired boon—the continuation of his lineage.
श्रीभगवानुवाच सगरस्य सुतान्सर्वान्वृतान्कुरु ममाज्ञया ।।9.11.
Śrī Bhagavān said: At my command, accept all the sons of Sagara.
