Description of the origin of Brahma, Vishnu, Maheshvara, and other deities. Shri Narayana said: Then, as the egg remained in the waters for the age of Brahma, suddenly, in due time, it split into two.
In its midst was an infant, shining with the brilliance of a hundred million suns, crying for a moment, pressed by hunger for the breast.
Abandoned by father and mother, shelterless in the midst of the waters, the lord of countless universes gazed upward, as if orphaned.
He, called the Great Cosmic Being, is both gross and most subtle; just as the atom is subtler than the subtle, so is he beyond the gross.
By his radiance, he is one-sixteenth portion of Krishna, the supreme self; he is the foundation of all worlds, and is called the primordial Mahavishnu.
In each of his hair follicles exist all the universes; even Krishna is not able to state their number.
If there is a number for the grains of dust, never is there a number for the universes; likewise, the number of Brahmas, Vishnus, and Shivas is not known.
In each universe, there are Brahmas, Vishnus, and Shivas in this way; from the netherworld up to Brahmaloka, the cosmic egg is described.
Above that is Vaikuntha, situated outside the cosmic egg; and above that is Goloka, fifty crore yojanas higher.
It is eternal and of the nature of truth, just as Krishna is; the earth is measured as seven continents, accompanied by seven oceans.
It is endowed with slightly less than fifty sub-continents, countless mountains and forests; above are the seven heavenly realms, including Brahmaloka.
And below are the seven netherworlds; thus is the cosmic egg itself. Above the earth is Bhurloka, then Bhuvarloka beyond that.
Beyond that is Svarloka, then Janaloka further above; then Tapoloka beyond that, and Satyaloka above all.
Beyond that is Brahmaloka, shining like molten gold; thus, all this—both outer and inner—is artificial.
When that is destroyed, O Narada, all is destroyed; all the assemblies of the universe are impermanent, like bubbles on water.
Goloka and Vaikuntha are said to be eternal, ever uncreated; in each hair follicle, a universe is certainly established.
Krishna does not know their number—what then of anyone else? In each and every universe are Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and others.
There are three crore gods everywhere, O child, as well as guardians of the directions, the lords of the quarters, stars, planets, and so on.
On earth are the four castes, and below are the nagas and all moving and unmoving beings; then, in time, that Virat saw above again and again.
Within the egg was emptiness, and there was nothing else; afflicted by hunger, he became anxious and wept again and again.
Then, attaining knowledge, he meditated on Krishna, the Supreme Person; thereupon he saw there the eternal Brahman-light.
He saw one dark as a fresh raincloud, two-armed, clad in yellow garments, smiling, holding a flute, eager to bestow grace upon devotees.
The boy, pleased, laughed upon seeing the lord, his father; then the bestower of boons granted him a suitable boon.
Be equal to me in knowledge, free from hunger and thirst; O child, be the abode of countless universes until dissolution.
Be desireless and fearless, and the giver of boons to all; be free from old age, death, disease, sorrow, and suffering.
Having said this, he recited into his ear the great six-syllabled mantra, repeating three times the supreme Vedic formula.
The two syllables 'Kṛṣṇa', ending with the fourth vowel and preceded by praṇava, and ending with 'born of fire', are esteemed and supremely remove all obstacles.
Having given the mantra, the Lord then arranged the offering; listen, O son of Brahmā, I will tell you.
Whatever offering a Vaiṣṇava gives to Viṣṇu in the world, that is but a sixteenth part for the enjoyer, while the rest belongs to Viṣṇu himself.
For the attributeless Self, who is completely full, there is truly no need for any offering to Kṛṣṇa.
