सर्वे लोकाः समाच्छन्ना यया योगेन रात्रिषु । कालस्य तिस्रो भार्याश्च संध्या रात्रिर्दिनानि च
By her power, all worlds are covered in the nights through yoga; time has three wives: twilight, night, and day.
याभिर्विना विधाता च संख्यां कर्तुं न शक्यते । क्षुत्पिपासे लोभभार्ये धन्ये मान्ये च पूजिते
Without them, even the Creator is unable to reckon the count; hunger and thirst are the wives of prosperity, honor, and worship.
याभ्यां व्याप्तं जगत्सर्वं नित्यं चिन्तातुरं भवेत् । प्रभा च दाहिका चैव द्वे भार्ये तेजसस्तथा
By these two, the whole world is pervaded and always afflicted by anxiety; radiance and burning are the two wives of energy.
याभ्यां विना जगत्स्रष्टा विधातुं च न हीश्वरः । कालकन्ये मृत्युजरे प्रज्वारस्य प्रियाप्रिये
Without these, the creator of the world is not able to bring forth creation; the daughters of Time—Death and Old Age—are the beloved and unlovely of fever.
याभ्यां जगत्समुच्छिन्नं विधात्रा निर्मितं विधौ । निद्राकन्या च तन्द्रा सा प्रीतिरन्या सुखप्रिये
By these two, the world is destroyed, and by the Creator, they are established in creation; sleep is the daughter, and drowsiness, while delight is another, dear to happiness.
याभ्यां व्याप्तं जगत्सर्वं विधिपुत्र विधेर्विधौ । वैराग्यस्य च द्वे भार्ये श्रद्धा भक्तिश्च पूजिते
By these two, the whole world is pervaded, O son of the Creator, in the act of creation; dispassion has two wives: faith and devotion, both honored.
याभ्यां शश्वज्जगत्सर्वं यज्जीवन्मुक्तिमन्मुने । अदितिर्देवमाता च सुरभी च गवां प्रसूः
By these two, the entire world, which is ever liberated while living, exists, O sage; Aditi is the mother of the gods, and Surabhi is the mother of cows.
दितिश्च दैत्यजननी कद्रूश्च विनता दनुः । उपयुक्ताः सृष्टिविधावेतास्तु कीर्तिताः कलाः
Diti is the mother of the Daityas, Kadrū and Vinatā and Danu; these, employed in the act of creation, are the powers that have been described.
कला अन्याः सन्ति बह्व्यस्तासु काश्चिन्निबोध मे । रोहिणी चन्द्रपत्नी च संज्ञा सूर्यस्य कामिनी
There are many other powers; among them, listen to some from me: Rohiṇī is the wife of the Moon, Saṃjñā is the beloved of the Sun.
शतरूपा मनोर्भार्या शचीन्द्रस्य च गेहिनी । तारा बृहस्पतेर्भार्या वसिष्ठस्याप्यरुन्धती
Śatarūpā is the wife of Manu, Śacī is the spouse of Indra; Tārā is the wife of Bṛhaspati, and Arundhatī is the wife of Vasiṣṭha.
अहल्या गौतमस्त्री साप्यनसूयात्रिकामिनी । देवहूतिः कर्दमस्य प्रसूतिर्दक्षकामिनी
Ahalyā is the wife of Gautama, Anasūyā is the beloved of Atri; Devahūti is the wife of Kardama, Prasūti is the beloved of Dakṣa.
पितॄणां मानसी कन्या मेनका साम्बिकाप्रसूः । लोपामुद्रा तथा कुन्ती कुबेरकामिनी तथा
The mind-born daughter of the ancestors is Menakā, the offspring of Ambikā; Lopāmudrā, Kuntī, and also the beloved of Kubera.
वरुणानी प्रसिद्धा च बलेर्विन्ध्यावलिस्तथा । कान्ता च दमयन्ती च यशोदा देवकी तथा
Varuṇānī is renowned, as is Vindhyāvalī, the wife of Bali; also the beloved Damayantī, Yaśodā, and Devakī.
गान्धारी द्रौपदी शैव्या सा च सत्यवती प्रिया । वृषभानुप्रिया साध्वी राधामाता कुलोद्वहा
Gāndhārī, Draupadī, Śaivyā, and the dear Satyavatī; the virtuous Vṛṣabhānu's beloved, Rādhā's mother, the upholder of her lineage.
मन्दोदरी च कौसल्या सुभद्रा कौरवी तथा । रेवती सत्यभामा च कालिन्दी लक्ष्मणा तथा
Mandodarī, Kausalyā, Subhadrā, and the Kaurava princess; Revatī, Satyabhāmā, Kālindī, and Lakṣmaṇā as well.
जाम्बवती नाग्नजितिर्मित्रविन्दा तथापरा । लक्ष्मणा रुक्मिणी सीता स्वयं लक्ष्मीः प्रकीर्तिता
Jāmbavatī, Nāgnajitī, Mitravindā, and another; Lakṣmaṇā, Rukmiṇī, Sītā—who herself is called Lakṣmī.
काली योजनगन्धा च व्यासमाता महासती । बाणपुत्री तथोषा च चित्रलेखा च तत्सखी
Kālī, Yojanagandhā, Vyāsa's mother, the great and virtuous one; Bāṇa's daughter Uṣā, and her friend Citralekhā.
प्रभावती भानुमती तथा मायावती सती । रेणुका च भृगोर्माता राममाता च रोहिणी
Prabhāvatī, Bhānumatī, and the faithful Māyāvatī; Reṇukā, mother of Bhṛgu, and Rohiṇī, mother of Rāma.
एकनन्दा च दुर्गा सा श्रीकृष्णभगिनी सती । बह्व्यः सत्यः कलाश्चैव प्रकृतेरेव भारते
Ekanandā, Durgā, and the virtuous sister of Śrī Kṛṣṇa; many true and partial manifestations as well, all from Prakṛti in Bhārata.
या याश्च ग्रामदेव्यः स्युस्ताः सर्वाः प्रकृतेः कलाः । कलांशांशसमुद्भूताः प्रतिविश्वेषु योषितः
And all the village goddesses—these are all aspects of Prakṛti; women in every world arise from portions and sub-portions of her.
योषितामवमानेन प्रकृतेश्च पराभवः । ब्राह्मणी पूजिता येन पतिपुत्रवती सती
By disrespecting women, there is defeat of Prakṛti; the Brāhmaṇī who is honored becomes a chaste wife with husband and sons.
प्रकृतिः पूजिता तेन वस्त्रालङ्कारचन्दनैः । कुमारी चाष्टवर्षीया वस्त्रालङ्कारचन्दनैः
Prakṛti is worshipped by him with garments, ornaments, and sandal paste; and so is the maiden of eight years, with garments, ornaments, and sandal paste.
पूजिता येन विप्रस्य प्रकृतिस्तेन पूजिता । सर्वाः प्रकृतिसम्भूता उत्तमाधममध्यमाः
Whoever worships her in the form of a maiden thus worships Prakṛti; all women, whether superior, inferior, or middling, are born from Prakṛti.
सत्त्वांशाश्चोत्तमा ज्ञेयाः सुशीलाश्च पतिव्रताः । मध्यमा रजसश्चांशास्ताश्च भोग्याः प्रकीर्तिताः
Those of the highest quality are to be known as virtuous and devoted to their husbands; the middling, born of rajas, are said to be for enjoyment.
सुखसम्भोगवश्याश्च स्वकार्ये तत्पराः सदा । अधमास्तमसश्चांशा अज्ञातकुलसम्भवाः
They are always eager for pleasure and devoted to their own affairs; the lowest, born of tamas, are of unknown lineage.
दुर्मुखाः कुलहा धूर्ताः स्वतन्त्राः कलहप्रियाः । पृथिव्यां कुलटा याश्च स्वर्गे चाप्सरसां गणाः
They are ill-spoken, destroyers of families, deceitful, independent, and fond of quarrels; on earth they are called wanton women, and in heaven, the groups of apsarases.
प्रकृतेस्तमसश्चांशाः पुंश्चल्यः परिकीर्तिताः । एवं निगदितं सर्वं प्रकृते रूपवर्णनम्
These are said to be the women arising from the portion of tamas in Prakṛti; thus the forms and types of Prakṛti have all been described.
ताः सर्वाः पूजिताः पृथ्व्यां पुण्यक्षेत्रे च भारते । पूजिता सुरथेनादौ दुर्गा दुर्गार्तिनाशिनी
All these are worshipped on earth, especially in the sacred land of Bhārata; first worshipped by Suratha, Durgā, the remover of distress.
ततः श्रीरामचन्द्रेण रावणस्य वधार्थिना । तत्पश्चाज्जगतां माता त्रिषु लोकेषु पूजिता
Then by Śrī Rāma Candra, who sought the destruction of Rāvaṇa; thereafter, the Mother of the worlds was worshipped in the three realms.
जाताऽऽदौ दक्षकन्या या निहत्य दैत्यदानवान् । ततो देहं परित्यज्य यज्ञे भर्तुश्च निन्दया
At first, she was born as Dakṣa's daughter, who slew the daityas and dānavas; then, abandoning her body in the sacrifice due to her husband's insult.
