यथासंख्यं च देवर्षे श्रुतिश्च जलभं तथा । कल्पिते कल्पनाविद्भिर्नेत्रयोर्दक्षवामयोः
O sage among the gods, in order, the ear and the water sign are thus assigned by those skilled in arrangement, at the right and left eyes.
धनिष्ठा चैव मूलं च कर्णयोर्दक्षवामयोः । मघादीन्यष्टभानीह दक्षिणायनगानि च
Dhanishtha and Mula are at the right and left ears; the eight stars beginning with Magha, which move in the southern solstice, are also placed.
युञ्जीत वामपार्श्वीयवंक्रिषु क्रमतो मुने । तथैव मृगशीर्षादीन्युदग्भानि च यानि हि
One should assign them in order to the left side's joints, O sage, and likewise, those of the northern solstice, beginning with Mrigashirsha.
दक्षपार्श्वे वंक्रिकेषु प्रातिलोम्येन योजयेत् । शततारा तथा ज्येष्ठा स्कन्धयोर्दक्षवामयोः
On the right side, one should assign them in reverse order to the joints; Shatabhisha and Jyeshtha are at the right and left shoulders.
अगस्तिश्चोत्तरहनावधरायां हनौ यमः । मुखेष्वङ्गारकः प्रोक्तो मन्दः प्रोक्त उपस्थके
Agastya is at the upper jaw, Yama at the lower jaw, Angaraka is said to be at the mouth, and Manda at the genital organ.
बृहस्पतिश्च ककुदि वक्षस्यर्को ग्रहाधिपः । नारायणश्च हृदये चन्द्रो मनसि तिष्ठति
Brihaspati is at the hump, the Sun, lord of planets, is at the chest; Narayana is in the heart, and the Moon abides in the mind.
स्तनयोरश्विनौ नाभ्यामुशनाः परिकीर्तितः । बुधः प्राणापानयोश्च गले राहुश्च केतवः
The Ashvins are at the breasts, Ushanas is said to be at the navel; Budha is at the breath and the throat, Rahu and the comets as well.
सर्वाङ्गेषु तथा रोमकूपे तारागणाः स्मृताः । एतद्भगवतो विष्णोः सर्वदेवमयं वपुः
On all the limbs and in the hair follicles, the groups of stars are remembered; this is the body of Lord Vishnu, composed of all the gods.
सन्ध्यायां प्रत्यहं ध्यायेत्प्रयतो वाग्यतो मुनिः । निरीक्षमाणश्चोत्तिष्ठेन्मन्त्रेणानेन धीश्वरः
At twilight, every day, the sage who is disciplined in speech and mind should meditate; observing, he should rise, using this mantra, O lord of intellect.
नमो ज्योतिर्लोकाय कालायानिमिषां पतये महापुरुषायाभिधीमहीति
Salutations to the lord of the luminous realms, to Time, to the master of the sleepless ones, to the great person; thus let us declare.
ग्रहर्क्षतारामयमाधिदैविकं पापापहं मन्त्रकृतां त्रिकालम् । नमस्यतः स्मरतो वा त्रिकालं नश्येत तत्कालजमाशु पापम्
This mantra, composed by the seers, removes sins caused by planets, stars, and divine influences; for one who worships or remembers it three times daily, the sins arising at those times are swiftly destroyed.
राहुमण्डलाद्यवस्थानवर्णनम् श्रीनारायण उवाच अधस्तात्सवितुः प्रोक्तमयुतं राहुमण्डलम् । नक्षत्रवच्चरति च सैंहिकेयोऽतदर्हणः
Description of the position of Rahu's disc. Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: Below the sun is said to be Rahu's disc, measuring ten thousand yojanas; the son of Siṃhikā moves like a star, but is not worthy of worship.
सूर्याचन्द्रमसोरेव मर्दनः सिंहिकासुतः । अमरत्वं च खेटत्वं लेभे यो विष्ण्वनुग्रहात्
The son of Siṃhikā, who afflicts the sun and moon, attained immortality and the status of a planet by the grace of Viṣṇu.
यददस्तरणेर्बिम्बं तपतो योजनायुतम् । तच्छादकोऽसुरो ज्ञेयोऽप्यर्कसाहस्रविस्तरम्
The disc beneath the sun, glowing, spans ten thousand yojanas; the demon who covers it should be known as having the breadth of a thousand suns.
त्रयोदशसहस्रं तु सोमस्याच्छादको ग्रहः । यः पर्वसमये वैरानुबन्धी छादकोऽभवत्
The planet that covers the moon spans thirteen thousand yojanas; at the time of the lunar phase, the covering occurs due to enmity.
सूर्याचन्द्रमसोर्दूराद्भवेच्छादनकारकः । तन्निशम्योभयत्रापि विष्णुना प्रेरितं स्वकम्
From a distance, the covering of the sun and moon occurs; hearing this, in both cases, Viṣṇu sends forth his own power.
चक्रं सुदर्शनं नाम ज्वालामालातिभीषणम् । तत्तेजसा दुःसहेन समन्तात्परिवारितम्
The Sudarśana discus, named thus, is a terrifying garland of flames; surrounded on all sides by its unbearable brilliance.
मुहूर्तो द्विजमानस्तु दूराच्चकितमानसः । आरान्निवर्तते सोऽयमुपराग इतीव ह
For a moment, the twice-born, standing afar with a startled mind, turns away from the radiance; this is called an eclipse.
उच्यते लोकमध्ये तु देवर्षे अवबुध्यताम् । ततोऽधस्तात्समाख्याता लोकाः परमपावनाः
It is explained in the midst of the world, O devarṣi, for your understanding; below that, the most purified worlds are described.
सिद्धानां चारणानां च विद्याध्राणां च सत्तम । योजनायुतविख्याता लोकाः पुण्यनिषेविताः
O best of sages, the worlds renowned for ten thousand yojanas are inhabited by siddhas, cāraṇas, and vidyādharas, and are frequented by the virtuous.
ततोऽप्यधस्ताद्देवर्षे यक्षाणां च सरक्षसाम् । पिशाचप्रेतभूतानां विहाराजिरमुत्तमम्
Further below, O devarṣi, are the realms of yakṣas and rākṣasas, and the excellent abodes for piśācas, pretas, and bhūtas.
अन्तरिक्षं च तत्प्रोक्तं यावद्वायुः प्रवाति हि । यावन्मेघास्ततोद्यन्ति तत्प्रोक्तं ज्ञानकोविदैः
That is called the atmosphere, extending as far as the wind blows and as far as clouds rise; so it is described by those skilled in knowledge.
ततोऽधस्ताद्योजनानां शतं यावद् द्विजोत्तम । पृथिवी परिसंख्याता सुपर्णश्येनसारसाः
Below that, O best of twice-born, for a hundred yojanas, the earth is counted, along with the birds Garuḍa, Śyena, and Sāra.
हंसादयः प्रोत्पतन्ति पार्थिवाः पृथिवीभवाः । भूसन्निवेशावस्थानं यथावदुपवर्णितम्
Swans and others fly forth, born of the earth; the arrangement and position of the earth have been described as appropriate.
अधस्तादवनेः सप्त देवर्षे विवराः स्मृताः । एकैकशो योजनानामायामोच्छ्रायतः पुनः
Below the earth, O devarṣi, seven cavities are remembered; each one has its own length and height measured in yojanas.
अयुतान्तरविख्याताः सर्वर्तुसुखदायकाः । अतलं प्रथमं प्रोक्तं द्वितीयं वितलं तथा
Known as separated by ten thousand yojanas, they give pleasure in all seasons; Atala is said to be the first, and Vitala the second.
तृतीयं सुतलं प्रोक्तं चतुर्थं वै तलातलम् । महातलं पञ्चमं च षष्ठं प्रोक्तं रसातलम्
The third is called Sutala, the fourth is truly Talātala; Mahātala is the fifth, and the sixth is known as Rasātala.
सप्तमं विप्र पातालं सप्तैते विवराः स्मृताः । एतेषु बिलस्वर्गेषु दिवोऽप्यधिकमेव च
The seventh, O Brahmin, is Pātāla; these seven are remembered as the lower regions, and among these subterranean heavens, they even surpass the heavens above.
कामभोगैश्वर्यसुखसमृद्धभुवनेषु च । नित्योद्यानविहारेषु सुखास्वादः प्रवर्तते
In these worlds, abundant with pleasures, enjoyments, wealth, and happiness, there is constant delight in gardens and amusements.
दैत्याश्च काद्रवेयाश्च दानवा बलशालिनः । नित्यप्रमुदिता रक्ताः कलत्रापत्यबन्धुभिः
There, the Daityas, Kādraveyas, and the powerful Dānavas, always joyful, remain attached to their wives, children, and relatives.
