एवं परस्तात्क्षीरोदात्परितश्चोपवेशितः । द्वात्रिंशल्लक्षसंख्याकयोजनायाममाश्रितः
In this way, beyond the ocean of milk, encircled on all sides, lies a region measuring thirty-two lakhs of yojanas in length.
स्वमानेन च द्वीपोऽयं दधिमण्डोदकेन च । शाकद्वीपो विशिष्टोऽयं यस्मिच्छाको महीरुहः
By its own measure and with curd-water, this island is distinguished as Śākadvīpa, where the śāka tree is the great tree.
स्वक्षेत्रव्यपदेशस्य कारणं स हि नारद । प्रैयव्रतोऽधिपस्तस्य मेधातिथिरिति स्मृतः
That is the reason for the designation of its territory, O Nārada; its ruler was Praiyavrata, remembered as Medhātithi.
विभज्य सप्त वर्षाणि पुत्रनामानि तेषु च । सप्त पुत्रान्निजान् स्थाप्य स्वयं योगगतिं गतः
Dividing it into seven regions, naming them after his sons, he established his seven sons there and himself attained the path of yoga.
पुरोजवो मनःपूर्वजवोऽथ पवमानकः । धूम्रानीकश्चित्ररेफो बहुरूपोऽथ विश्वधृक्
Purojava, Manahpūrvajava, then Pavamānaka; Dhūmrānīka, Citrarēpha, Bahurūpa, and Viśvadhṛk.
मर्यादागिरयः सप्त नद्यः सप्तैव कीर्तिताः । ईशान ऊरुशृङ्गोऽथ बलभद्रः शतकेशरः
The boundary mountains are seven, and seven rivers are also mentioned: Īśāna, Ūruśṛṅga, then Balabhadra, Śatakeśara.
सहस्रस्रोतको देवपालोऽप्यन्ते महाशनः । एतेऽद्रयः सप्त चोक्ताः सरिन्नामानि सप्त च
Sahasrasrotaka, Devapāla, and at the end Mahāśana; these seven mountains are spoken of, and seven river names as well.
अनघा प्रथमाऽऽयुर्दा उभयस्पृष्टिरेव च । अपराजिता पञ्चपदी सहस्रश्रुतिरेव च
Anaghā is the first, bestowing longevity, Ubhayaspṛṣṭi likewise; Aparājitā, Pañcapadī, Sahasraśruti likewise.
ततो निजधृतिश्चोक्ताः सप्त नद्यो महोज्ज्वलाः । तद्वर्षपुरुषाः सर्वे सत्यव्रतक्रतुव्रतौ
Then their own names are given: seven rivers, greatly radiant; all the men of that region are devoted to truth and ritual.
दानव्रतानुव्रतौ च चतुर्वर्णा उदीरिताः । भगवन्तं प्राणवायुं प्राणायामेन संयुताः
They are devoted to vows of charity, ritual, and the four castes are described; united with breath-control, they worship the Lord, the vital air.
यजन्ति निर्धूतरजस्तमसः परमं हरिम् । अन्तः प्रविश्य भूतानि यो बिभर्त्यात्मकेतुभिः
They worship the supreme Hari, purified of passion and darkness, who, entering within beings, sustains them with his own rays.
अन्तर्यामीश्वरः साक्षात्पातु नो यद्वशे इदम् । परस्ताद्दधिमण्डोदात्ततस्तु बहुविस्तरः
May the indwelling Lord, manifest, protect us, by whose power all this exists; beyond the curd-water lies a vast expanse.
पुष्करद्वीपनामायं शाकद्वीपद्विसंगुणः । स्वसमानेन स्वादूदकेनायं परिवेष्टितः
This is called Puṣkaradvīpa, surpassing Śākadvīpa in every respect; it is surrounded by its own measure and sweet water.
यत्रास्ते पुष्करं भ्राजदग्निचूडानिभानि च । पत्राणि विशदानीह स्वर्णपत्रायुतायुतम्
There stands Puṣkara, shining, and leaves resembling fire-crests; here, the leaves are bright, adorned with countless golden leaves.
श्रीमद्भगवतश्चेदमासनं परमेष्ठिनः । कल्पितं लोकगुरुणा सर्वलोकसिसृक्षया
This seat of the supreme creator, the glorious Bhagavata, was established by the teacher of the worlds, with the intention to create all beings.
तद्द्वीप एक एवायं मानसोत्तरनामकः । अर्वाचीनपराचीनवर्षयोरवधिर्गिरिः
That island is the only one called Mānasa-Uttara; its boundary between the eastern and western regions is marked by a mountain.
उच्छ्रायायामयोः संख्यायुतयोजनसम्मिता । यत्र दिक्षु च चत्वारि चतसृषु पुराणि ह
Its height and breadth are each measured as ten thousand yojanas; in its four directions, there are four ancient cities.
इन्द्रादिलोकपालानां यदुपर्यर्कनिर्गमः । मेरुं प्रदक्षिणीकुर्वन् भानुः पर्येति यत्र हि
There, the sun, after passing above the realms of Indra and other guardians of the worlds, circles Mount Meru, moving around it.
संवत्सरात्मकं चक्रं देवाहोरात्रतो भ्रमन् । प्रैयव्रतोऽधिपो वीतिहोत्रः स्वात्मजकद्वयम्
The wheel of the year, representing day and night for the gods, revolves; Priyavrata is the ruler, and Vītihotra with his two sons.
वर्षद्वये परिस्थाप्य वर्षनामधरं क्रमात् । रमणो धातकिश्चैव तत्तद्वर्षपती उभौ
He established two regions, assigning names to them in order; Ramaṇa and Dhātaki are both their respective rulers.
कृताः स्वयं पूर्वजवद्भगवद्भक्तितत्पराः । तद्वर्षपुरुषा ब्रह्मरूपिणं परमेश्वरम्
They themselves, like their ancestors, are devoted to the worship of the Blessed Lord; the people of those regions worship the Supreme Lord in the form of Brahma.
सकर्मकेन योगेन यजन्ति परिशीलिताः । यत्तत्कर्ममयं लिङ्ग ब्रह्मलिङ्गं जनोऽर्चयेत् । एकान्तमद्वयं शान्तं तस्मै भगवते नमः
With actions and yoga, they worship, having been instructed; whatever is the form of action, let the people worship the Brahma-form, which is singular, non-dual, peaceful—salutations to that Blessed Lord.
सूर्यगतिवर्णनम् नारायण उवाच ततः परस्तादचलो लोकालोकेति नामकः । अन्तराले च लोकालोकयोर्यः परिकल्पितः
Description of the sun's movement. Nārāyaṇa said: Beyond that is the immovable mountain called Lokāloka; and between Lokāloka and the worlds, that which is established.
यावदस्ति च देवर्षे ह्यन्तरं मानसोत्तरात् । सुमेरोस्तावती शुद्धा काञ्चनी भूमिरस्ति हि
As far as there is space, O sage, between Mānasa-Uttara and Sumeru, there exists a pure, golden land.
दर्पणोदरतुल्या सा सर्वप्राणिविवर्जिता । यस्यां पदार्थः प्रहितो न किञ्चित्प्रत्युदीयते
That land is like the interior of a mirror, devoid of all living beings; whatever object is sent there, nothing returns.
अतः सर्वप्राणिसङ्घरहिता सा च नारद । लोकालोक इति व्याख्या यदत्र परिकल्पिता
Therefore, O Nārada, since it is devoid of all groups of living beings, it is explained as Lokāloka, as established here.
लोकालोकान्तरे चास्य वर्तते सर्वदा स्थितिः । ईश्वरेण स लोकानां त्रयाणामन्तगः कृतः
In the space between Lokāloka, its existence always remains; by the Lord, it was made the boundary of the three worlds.
सूर्यादीनां ध्रुवान्तानां रश्मयो यद्वशादिह । अर्वाचीनाश्च त्रीँल्लोकानातन्वानाः कदापि हि
The rays of the sun and others up to Dhruva, according to their influence, sometimes extend to the three worlds below.
पराचीनत्वभाजो हि न भवन्ति च नारद । तावदुन्नहनायामः पर्वतेन्द्रो महोदयः
But those that are directed outward do not reach, O Nārada; so great is the height of the chief mountain, Mahodaya.
एतावाँल्लोकविन्यासोऽयं संस्थामानलक्षणैः । कविभिः स तु पञ्चाशत्कोटिभिर्गणितस्य च
Thus is the arrangement of the worlds, with their boundaries and characteristics; the poets have calculated it as fifty crore.
