तेषु वर्षाद्रयः सप्त सप्तैव सरितः स्मृताः । सरसः शतशृङ्गश्च वामदेवश्च कन्दकः
In those regions, there are seven mountain ranges and seven rivers; the mountains are Shatashringa, Vamadeva, Kandaka,
कुमुदः पुष्पवर्षश्च सहस्रश्रुतिरेव च । एते च पर्वताः सप्त नदीनामानि चोच्यते
Kumuda, Pushpavarsha, Sahasrashruti, and these are the seven mountains; now the names of the rivers are spoken.
अनुमतिः सिनीवाली सरस्वती कुहूस्तथा । रजनी चैव नन्दा च राकेति परिकीर्तिताः
Anumati, Sinivali, Sarasvati, Kuhu, Rajani, Nanda, and Raka are the rivers named.
तद्वर्षपुरुषाः सर्वे चातुर्वर्ण्यसमाह्वयाः । श्रुतधरो वीर्यधरो वसुन्धर इषुन्धरः
All the people of those regions are known by the fourfold classes: Shrutadhara, Viryadhara, Vasundhara, and Ishundhara.
भगवन्तं वेदमयं यजन्ते सोममीश्वरम् । स्वगोभिः पितृदेवेभ्यो विभजत्कृष्णशुक्लयोः
They worship the Lord, who is the embodiment of the Vedas and Soma, the Lord; with their own cows, they offer to the ancestors and gods, dividing the offerings into black and white.
सर्वासां च प्रजानां च राजा सोमः प्रसीदतु । एवं सुरोदाद् द्विगुणः स्वमानेन प्रकीर्तितः
May Soma, the king of all beings, be pleased; thus, the island beyond Suroda is said to be twice its size.
घृतोदेनावृतः सोऽयं कुशद्वीपः प्रकाशते । यस्मिन्नास्ते कुशस्तम्बो द्वीपाख्याकारणो ज्वलन्
That is Kusadvipa, surrounded by the river Ghritoda; there stands the kusa grass stalk, blazing, which gives the island its name.
स्वशष्परोचिषा काष्ठा भासयन्परितिष्ठते । हिरण्यरेतास्तद्द्वीपपतिः प्रैयव्रत स्वराट्
Its stalks shine with their own radiance, illuminating the surroundings; Hiranyareta, son of Priyavrata, sovereign, is the lord of that island.
स्वपुत्रेभ्यश्च सप्तभ्यस्तद्द्वीपं सन्तधाभजत् । वसुश्च वसुदानश्च तथा दृढरुचिः परः
He divided that island among his seven sons: Vasu, Vasudāna, Dṛḍharuci, Para, Nābhigupta, Stutyavrata, and Viviktanāmadeva.
नाभिगुप्तस्तुत्यव्रतौ विविक्तनामदेवकौ । तेषां वर्षेषु सप्तैव सीमागिरिवराः स्मृताः
Nābhigupta, Stutyavrata, and Viviktanāmadeva—these seven regions are said to be bounded by great mountains.
नद्यः सप्तैव सन्तीह तन्नामानि निबोधत । चक्रस्तथा चतुःशृङ्गः कपिलश्चित्रकूटकः
There are seven rivers here; listen to their names: Cakra, Catuḥśṛṅga, Kapila, Citrakūṭaka,
देवानीकश्चोर्ध्वरोमा द्रविण सप्त पर्वताः । रसकुल्या मधुकुल्या मित्रविन्दा तथैव च
Devānīka, Ūrdhvaromā, and Draviṇa—these are the seven mountains; Rasakulya, Madhukulya, and Mitravindā as well.
श्रुतविन्दा देवगर्भा घृतच्युन्मन्दमालिके । यत्पयोभिः कुशद्वीपवासिनः सर्व एव ते
Śrutavindā, Devagarbhā, Ghṛtacyu, and Mandamālikā—by whose waters all the inhabitants of Kuśadvīpa live.
कुशलः कोविदश्चैवाप्यभियुक्तस्तथैव च । कुलकश्चेति संज्ञाभिश्चतुर्वर्णाः प्रकीर्तिताः
Kuśala, Kovida, Abhiyukta, and Kulaka—these are the names by which the four castes are known.
जातवेदसरूपं तं देवं कर्मजकौशलैः । यजन्ते देववर्याभाः सर्वे सर्वविदो जनाः
All the people there, possessing knowledge and skill in ritual, worship the god Jātavedas, who is of the form of fire, as if he were the best among the gods.
परस्यब्रह्मणः साक्षाज्जातवेदोऽसि हव्यवाट् । देवानां पुरुषाङ्गानां यज्ञेन पुरुषं यज । एवं यजन्ते ज्वलनं सर्वे द्वीपाधिवासिनः
O Jātavedas, you are directly the fire that carries offerings to the Supreme Brahman; worship the Purusha, the cosmic being, through sacrifice, as the limbs of the gods—thus do all the inhabitants of the island worship the fire.
भुवनकोशवर्णने क्रौञ्चशाकपुष्करद्वीपवर्णनम् नारद उवाच शिष्टद्वीपप्रमाणं च वद सर्वार्थदर्शन । येन विज्ञातमात्रेण परानन्दमयो भवेत्
Description of the worlds, and of Krauñca, Śāka, and Puṣkara islands. Nārada said: Tell me the measure of the remaining islands, O seer of all things, by knowing which one becomes filled with supreme bliss.
श्रीरानारायण उवाच कुशद्वीपस्य परितो घृतोदावरणं महत् । ततो बहिः क्रौंचद्वीपो द्विगुणः स्यात्स्वमानतः
Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: Around Kuśadvīpa is the great ocean of clarified butter; beyond that is Krauñcadvīpa, which is twice as large as the previous one.
क्षीरोदेनावृतो भाति यस्मिन्क्रौंचाद्रिरस्ति च । नामनिर्वर्तकः सोऽयं द्वीपस्य परिवर्तते
It is surrounded by the ocean of milk, in which stands Mount Krauñca; this mountain is known as the marker of the island's boundary.
योऽसौ गुहस्य शक्त्या च भिन्नकुक्षिः पुराभवत् । क्षीरोदेनासिच्यमानो वरुणेन च रक्षितः
That mountain, which was once split open by the power of Guha, was bathed by the ocean of milk and protected by Varuṇa.
घृतपृष्ठो नाम यस्य विभाति किल नायकः । प्रियव्रतात्मजः श्रीमान् सर्वलोकनमस्कृतः
Its illustrious ruler is named Ghṛtapṛṣṭha, son of Priyavrata, honored by all the worlds.
स्वद्वीपं तु विभज्यैव सप्तधा स्वात्मजान्ददौ । पुत्रनामसु वर्षेषु वर्षपान्सन्निवेशयन्
He divided his own island into seven parts and gave them to his sons, appointing them as rulers over the regions named after them.
स्वयं भगवतस्तस्य शरणं सञ्जगाम ह । आमो मधुरुहश्चैव मेघपृष्ठः सुधामकः
He himself sought refuge in the Supreme Lord; the sons were Āma, Madhuruha, Meghapṛṣṭha, Sudhāmaka,
भ्राजिष्ठो लोहितार्णश्च वनस्पतिरितीव च । नगा नद्यश्च सप्तैव विख्याता भुवि सर्वतः
Bhrājiṣṭha, Lohitārṇa, and Vanaspati; and there are seven famous mountains and rivers throughout the land.
शुक्लो वै वर्धमानश्च भोजनश्चोपबर्हणः । नन्दश्च नन्दनः सर्वतोभद्र इति कीर्तिताः
They are called Śukla, Vardhamāna, Bhojana, Upabarhaṇa, Nanda, Nandana, and Sarvatobhadra.
अभया अमृतौघा चार्यका तीर्थवतीति च । वृत्तिरूपवती शुक्ला पवित्रवतिका तथा
Abhayā, Amṛtaughā, Āryakā, Tīrthavatī, Vṛttirūpavatī, Śuklā, and Pavitravatikā are the names of the rivers.
एतासामुदकं पुण्यं चातुर्वर्ण्येन पीयते । पुरुषऋषभौ तद्वद् द्रविणाख्यश्च देवकः
The sacred water of these is drunk by the four castes; likewise, the two foremost men and Devaka called Draviṇa.
एते चतुर्वर्णजाताः पुरुषा निवसन्ति हि । तत्रत्याः पुरुषा आपोमयं देवमपां पतिम्
These men, born of the four castes, indeed dwell there; the people there worship the deity, lord of waters, composed of water.
पूर्णेनाञ्जलिना भक्त्या यजन्ते विविधक्रियाः । आपः पुरुषवीर्याः स्थ पुनन्तीर्भूर्भुवः स्वरः
With full handfuls and devotion, they perform various rituals; the waters, endowed with the strength of men, purify the earth, atmosphere, and heaven.
ता नः पुनीतामीवघ्नीः स्पृशतामात्मना भुवः । इति मन्त्रजपान्ते च स्तुवन्ति विविधैः स्तवैः
May those waters purify us, remove evil, and touch the earth with their essence; thus, at the end of mantra recitation, they praise with various hymns.
