He in whom, at the beginning, the great form of qualities arose, who is established in knowledge, who is truly the unborn Lord—by whose own power I create, in threefold ways, the vaikārika, tamasic, and indriya forms.
We, who are under the control of that great soul, stand like birds bound by a string; all of us, endowed with the great ego, the transformed tamasic and indriya forms, create by his grace all this.
This world, deluded by the great creation, does not know the means of liberation from the maya he has fashioned, bound to the cycles of action; to him, the essence of dissolution and creation, I bow.
Sri Narayana said: Thus, the Blessed Rudra, attended by the hosts of goddesses, worshipped the Lord Sankarshana in Ilavrita.
In the same way, the son of Dharma, named Bhadraśravas, and the lords of his lineage, the men devoted to Bhadra, also worshipped.
In the land of Bhadrāśva, they worshipped that renowned form of Vāsudeva, known as the horse-headed one, marked with the feet of Hayagrīva.
Restrained by supreme concentration and unwavering meditation, in the same way, they praised and approached that form.
Bhadraśravas and his followers said: 'Om, obeisance to the Blessed Lord of Dharma, the purifier of the self, obeisance.' Ah, how wondrous are the Lord's deeds! Though people are struck down, they do not see; though they meditate, they are not ready to abandon wrong actions; desiring to live, they abandon both son and father.
The wise declare that the universe is perishable, and those who know the self perceive this; yet, even so, they are bewildered by your maya, O unborn one. Your deeds are truly astonishing; I bow to you.
Your acts of creation, maintenance, and dissolution of the universe, though you are the non-doer, are openly accepted; it is not surprising, for in you, who are both the cause and effect, the all-pervading and the transcendent, all things exist in reality.
At the end of the age, when the Vedas are concealed by darkness, you, taking the form of the horse-headed one, retrieve them from the netherworld for the sage who seeks them; to you, whose actions are never in vain, I bow.
Thus, those named Bhadraśravas praise the Lord of the gods, the horse-headed Hari, and describe his qualities.
Whoever recites or has others listen to this account of theirs, casting off the cloak of sin, will go to the realm of the Goddess.
Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: In Harivarṣa, the blessed Nṛhari, destroyer of sin, abides, his mind joined to yoga, bestowing grace upon his devotees.
That great devotee among asuras, seeing his beloved form, filled with devotion and knowing his true qualities, offers praise.
Prahlāda said: Om, obeisance to the blessed Narasiṃha! O blazing one, appear, appear! With adamantine fangs, destroy the roots of my karmic desires, devour the darkness, devour! Om, svāhā! Grant me fearlessness within myself. May there be well-being for the world; may the wicked become gentle; may all beings contemplate peace together; may our minds delight in the transcendent Lord, and may our devotion, though causeless, be absorbed in him.
If attachment to home, wife, children, wealth, and relatives arises, but not to those dear to the Lord, then one who is self-satisfied and content with the necessities of life attains perfection, not one who seeks the pleasures of the senses.
The mind of one who repeatedly touches the holy places gained through association with the mighty and their own strength is cleansed of inner impurity by the unborn Lord through the scriptures; who indeed would not serve the heroic Mukunda?
Wherever there is pure devotion to the Lord, all divine qualities assemble there; but in one without devotion to Hari, how can there be great qualities, as he runs outwardly after illusions in vain imagination?
Hari, the Lord himself, is the indwelling soul of embodied beings, just as water is desired by fish; if one abandons him and becomes attached to home, then greatness is found only in the age of a married couple.
Therefore, abandoning the root causes of passion, anger, pride, desire, fear, and dejection, and leaving behind the household and the cycle of worldly existence, what fear can there be for those who worship the feet of Narasiṃha?
Thus, the lord of the Daityas also, with devotion, praises daily Nṛhari, the remover of the elephant of sin, who dwells in the lotus of the heart.
In the land of Ketumāla, the Lord, assuming the form of Smara, always resides, worthy of worship by the rulers of that land.
By this, the rulers of that land, ever bestowers of honor upon the great, worship him and Lakṣmī, born of the ocean, with a multitude of hymns.
Lakṣmī said: Om hrāṃ hrīṃ hrūṃ, obeisance to the blessed Hṛṣīkeśa, whose nature is distinguished by all special qualities, lord of intentions, thoughts, and minds, possessor of sixteen parts, composed of meters, food, nectar, and all things, great, mighty, strong, beautiful, and desirable—obeisance to you in both worlds. Women, by their vows, worship you, Lord of the senses, as their own, yet in this world they desire another as husband; for them, neither children, nor dear ones, nor wealth, nor long life are protected, for they are not independent.
He alone is the husband, free from all fear, who protects people distressed by fear on all sides by his own power; otherwise, mutual fear arises, and without attaining the self, one does not consider anything higher.
She who does not desire to worship your lotus feet is attached to all other desires; that very thing, when not obtained, is longed for, and when obtained, is worshipped, but when denied, O Lord, she is tormented by broken hopes.
For my attainment, O unborn Lord, gods, demons, and others perform severe austerities with concentrated minds; but apart from those devoted to your feet, they do not know me, for, O unconquered one, I dwell in your heart.
O Achyuta, you have placed your lotus hand upon my head in blessing, and you bear me, the chosen among the Sātvatas, through your wondrous power. Who can fathom the intent of the Lord, O all-pervading one?
Thus, desiring fulfillment, the lords of the worlds, headed by Prajāpati, continually praise you, the embodiment of universal friendship.
