The Description of the Worlds and the Division of Continents and Regions. Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: O divine sage, listen in detail to the division of the continents and regions of the entire earth, as established by the gods.
I will explain it briefly, for it is not possible to describe it fully anywhere. First is Jambudvīpa, which measures one hundred thousand yojanas.
It is vast and circular in shape, like the pericarp of a lotus. Within it are nine regions, each measuring nine thousand yojanas.
These regions are counted by their length, encircled on all sides by mountains, and are well-divided everywhere by eight long-shaped ranges.
Know that there are two regions, one to the south and one to the north, arranged like a bow. Among them, four are elongated and four are square-shaped, surrounding Ilāvṛta.
Ilāvṛta is the central region, firmly established at the navel. Here stands the golden king of mountains, rising one hundred thousand yojanas high.
This mountain is shaped like the pericarp of a lotus at the center of the earth-lotus. At its summit, it extends for thirty-two thousand yojanas.
At its base, it is sixteen thousand yojanas wide, embedded in the earth to that extent. To the north of Ilāvṛta are the Nīla, Śveta, and Śṛṅgavān mountains.
These three mountains are said to be the boundaries of three regions: Ramyaka, the second called Hiraṇmaya, and the third, Kuru.
In the region of Kuru, these mountains mark the boundaries. They extend east and west, and on both sides reach the shores of the salt ocean.
Each of these mountains is two thousand yojanas wide, and each successive one is ten percent wider than the previous, toward the north.
Their length gradually decreases, and they are adorned with various rivers. To the south of Ilāvṛta are Niṣadha, Hemakūṭa, and Himālaya.
These three mountains, spreading eastward, are beautiful and are said to rise ten thousand yojanas high.
These three boundary mountains divide the regions known as Harivarṣa, Kimpuruṣa, and Bhārata, each according to its own portion.
To the west of Ilāvṛta is the mountain called Mālyavān, and to the east, the splendid Gandhamādana mountain.
These two mountains, stretching from Nīla to Niṣadha, are each two thousand yojanas wide, serving as boundary-forming ranges.
