As he meditated, O sinless one, from the tip of Brahmā's nose suddenly emerged a young boar, the size of a thumb.
As he watched, O Nārada, in a moment that boar in the sky grew to the size of an elephant; truly, it was most astonishing.
When the foremost sages, led by Marīci, along with Sanaka and Nārada, saw that boar-like form, the lotus-born Brahmā began to ponder.
What is this divine being, appearing in the guise of a boar? This is a most astonishing event, emerging from the nostril.
I saw it first the size of a thumb’s tip, and in a moment it became like a great mountain. Is this the Lord himself, or is my sacrifice troubling my mind?
As Brahmā, the Supreme Self, was thus reflecting, the Lord in the form of a boar roared, his voice resembling a mountain’s thunder.
By that very roar, the Lord gladdened Brahmā and the assembled best of sages, making the ends of the directions resound.
Hearing that deep, thunderous sound, meant to dispel their distress, the residents of Jana, Tapas, and Satya worlds, along with the foremost immortals, listened intently.
Then the best of the twice-born, with hymns composed of Vedic meters—Ṛk, Sāma, and Atharva—surrounded the Primeval Person with their words.
Hearing their hymn, the blessed Lord Hari, with a mere glance of compassion, accepted their devotion and entered the waters.
As he entered within, the ocean, oppressed by the blows of his fierce tusks, spoke: 'O Lord, destroyer of those who seek refuge, protect me.'
Hearing the ocean’s words, the Lord Hari, the mighty one, parted the waters with his hands and entered deep within.
Moving here and there, searching for the earth, the Lord of all, sniffing repeatedly, slowly found the earth.
Then the Lord of gods, with his tusks, lifted up the earth, which was submerged in the waters and the support of all beings.
Having raised the earth on the tip of his tusk, the Lord of sacrifice, the Person of sacrifice, shone like an elephant lifting a splendid lotus.
Seeing him, the Lord of gods, Brahmā, together with Manu and the self-born, praised the Lord of gods, who had lifted the earth with his tusk, with words of praise.
Brahmā said: 'Victory to you, O lotus-eyed one, destroyer of devotees’ suffering, who has humbled the pride of the gods and grants all desires.'
And this earth, O Lord, shines beautifully as your own, just as a lotus, rich with splendid petals, shines when lifted by the trunk of a great elephant.
