By whose glance Brahmā creates all, Hari always sustains, and the lord of the universe destroys, by her grace.
Padmasambhava, afflicted by the fear born of Madhu and Kaitabha, was freed from the terrible ocean of demon existence by her praise.
You are Hrī, fame, memory, beauty, Kamalā, Girijā, Satī, Dākṣāyaṇī, womb of the Vedas, giver of accomplishments, always fearless.
I will praise you, salute you, worship you, recite your name, meditate, contemplate, behold, and listen, O Goddess, be gracious to me.
Brahmā is the repository of the Vedas, Kṛṣṇa is the abiding goal, Purandara is the dwelling place, the lord of the three worlds is the wielder of the noose, and the foremost among the lords of the Yādavas.
Kubera became the lord of treasures, Yama was born as the king of the departed, Nairṛta became the lord of the Rākṣasas, and Soma was born, indeed, from the waters.
O Lady of the worlds, revered by the three worlds, embodiment of supreme auspiciousness, I bow to you again and again, Mother of the universe, my salutations to you.
Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: Thus praised, the supreme Goddess Durgā Nārāyaṇī, being pleased, spoke these words to the sage, son of Brahmā.
The Goddess said: Choose a boon, O king, son of Brahmā, whatever you desire. I am pleased here by your hymn, devotion, and worship.
Manu said: If, O Goddess, you are pleased by my supreme devotion and compassion, then, by your command, may the creation of beings proceed without obstacles.
The Goddess said: The creation of beings shall indeed proceed by my grace, O king, and, without hindrance, there shall be ever-increasing growth.
Whoever recites this hymn composed by you with devotion to me, for them there will surely be success in knowledge, progeny, fame, and the arising of beauty.
Wealth and grain are born for them, their strength is unimpeded, everywhere there is victory, O king, happiness, and the destruction of enemies.
Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: Thus granting boons to Manu, the son of Brahmā, the Goddess disappeared as he, the wise one, looked on.
Then the king Manu, having obtained the boon, powerful son of Brahmā, spoke to Brahmā: 'Father, grant me a secluded place.'
'Where I may reside and create abundant beings, and perform sacrifices to the Lord of gods—please indicate that place to me without delay.'
Hearing his son's words, the mighty lord of progenitors pondered for a long time: 'How might this task be accomplished?'
'While I was creating, a vast and immeasurable time has passed; the earth, praised by the waters, has sunk and entered the primordial essence, the support of all.'
'This task I have considered—the Blessed Primeval Person will accomplish it, for I am dependent on his command and he is my helper.'
Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: Thus, as the lotus-born one reflected, surrounded on all sides by Manu and other great sages like Marīci, scorcher of foes—
As he meditated, O sinless one, from the tip of Brahmā's nose suddenly emerged a young boar, the size of a thumb.
As he watched, O Nārada, in a moment that boar in the sky grew to the size of an elephant; truly, it was most astonishing.
When the foremost sages, led by Marīci, along with Sanaka and Nārada, saw that boar-like form, the lotus-born Brahmā began to ponder.
What is this divine being, appearing in the guise of a boar? This is a most astonishing event, emerging from the nostril.
I saw it first the size of a thumb’s tip, and in a moment it became like a great mountain. Is this the Lord himself, or is my sacrifice troubling my mind?
As Brahmā, the Supreme Self, was thus reflecting, the Lord in the form of a boar roared, his voice resembling a mountain’s thunder.
By that very roar, the Lord gladdened Brahmā and the assembled best of sages, making the ends of the directions resound.
Hearing that deep, thunderous sound, meant to dispel their distress, the residents of Jana, Tapas, and Satya worlds, along with the foremost immortals, listened intently.
Then the best of the twice-born, with hymns composed of Vedic meters—Ṛk, Sāma, and Atharva—surrounded the Primeval Person with their words.
Hearing their hymn, the blessed Lord Hari, with a mere glance of compassion, accepted their devotion and entered the waters.
