The devotion of one who is filled with envy and anger is tamasic; but when one is free from harming others and acts only for one's own welfare—
He who is always desirous, seeking fame, wealth, and pleasure, worships me with great devotion in order to obtain the respective results—
But the ignorant person who, through a sense of difference, knows me as other than himself—his devotion, O lord of the mountains, is called rajasic.
Actions offered to the Supreme Lord and for the cleansing of sins, because they are prescribed in the Vedas, must certainly be performed by me at all times.
He who, with a firm and resolved mind, undertakes actions for my pleasure, even while holding onto the sense of difference—his devotion, O best of mountains, is sattvic.
This devotion, relying on the sense of difference, leads to supreme devotion; but the two kinds of devotion previously mentioned are not considered to lead to the Supreme.
Now listen to me as I describe supreme devotion: constant hearing of my virtues, continual recitation of my names—
And the mind's steady abiding in me, the mine of auspicious qualities and virtues, always like an unbroken stream of oil.
There is never any motive or cause in that devotion, nor any desire for proximity, equality, union, or residence with me.
He never knows anything greater than serving me; because of the absence of the distinction between servant and served, he does not desire liberation there.
Whoever, with supreme love, constantly contemplates me without fatigue, knows me as his very self, not as different.
He who meditates on the living beings as my own form, feels the same love for the Supreme Self as he does for his own self.
Because of the sameness of consciousness, he does not make distinctions, always perceiving all forms and beings as present everywhere.
He worships and honors all, even up to the lowest outcaste, O Lord, and, because he has abandoned all sense of difference, he never harbors thoughts of enmity anywhere.
He has faith in seeing my abodes, in seeing my devotees, in hearing my scriptures, and in mantras, tantras, and so on, O Lord.
His mind is overwhelmed with love for me, his body always thrilled, his eyes filled with tears of love, and his voice choked with emotion.
Whoever worships me, the supreme Lady, the source of the universe and the cause of all causes, with undivided devotion, O lord of mountains—
Whoever, free from deceit regarding wealth, always performs my divine vows, both regular and occasional, with devotion—
In whom, O mountain, the desire to witness my festivals and the act of celebrating my festivals arises naturally and steadily—
Who, singing my names aloud, truly dances, free from pride and the sense of identification with the body—
Whatever is done according to what is ordained by fate, let it be so; I have no concern even for the preservation of the body and such matters.
This devotion that has been described is remembered as supreme devotion, in which nothing apart from the Goddess is conceived.
When such supreme devotion truly arises in someone, O mountain, then that person merges into pure consciousness, into my own form.
The highest state of devotion is itself called knowledge, and it is also the limit of detachment, for both arise from knowledge.
Even if knowledge of me does not arise due to fate in one who has performed devotion, O mountain, that person attains Maṇidvīpa.
Having gone there, one enjoys all pleasures even without desire; at the end of that, true knowledge of my form as consciousness arises, O mountain.
By that knowledge, one is always liberated; liberation does not come otherwise. If knowledge arises here itself in the heart, directed inward—
For one whose life depends on my awareness, the life-forces do not depart; that one attains Brahman itself—who knows Brahman becomes Brahman.
Like gold worn at the neck, hidden by ignorance, it is attained only by the destruction of ignorance through knowledge.
O best of mountains, apart from what is known and unknown, my form appears in oneself as in a mirror, as in water, and in the world of ancestors.
