करवीरे महालक्षीरुमा देवी विनायके । आरोग्या वैद्यनाथे तु महाकाले महेश्वरी
In Karavīra, she is Mahālakṣī; at Vināyaka, she is Umā Devī; at Vaidyanātha, she is Ārogyā; at Mahākāla, she is Maheśvarī.
अभयेत्युष्णतीर्थेषु नितम्बा विन्ध्यपर्वते । माण्डव्ये माण्डवी नाम स्वाहा माहेश्वरीपुरे
At Uṣṇatīrtha, she is Abhayā; at Vindhya mountain, she is Nitambā; at Māṇḍavya, she is Māṇḍavī; at Maheśvarīpura, she is Svāhā.
छगलण्डे प्रचण्डा तु चण्डीकामरकण्टके । सोमेश्वरे वरारोहा प्रभासे पुष्करावती
At Chagalaṇḍa, she is Pracaṇḍā; at Caṇḍīkāmarakaṇṭaka, she is Caṇḍikā; at Someśvara, she is Varārohā; at Prabhāsa, she is Puṣkarāvatī.
देवमाता सरस्वत्यां पारावारा तटे स्मृता । महालये महाभागा पयोष्ण्यां पिङ्गलेश्वरी
At Sarasvatī, she is Devamātā, remembered on the ocean's shore; at Mahālaya, she is Mahābhāgā; at Payoṣṇī, she is Piṅgaleśvarī.
सिंहिका कृतशौचे तु कार्तिके त्वतिशाङ्करी । उत्पलावर्तके लोला सुभद्रा शोणसङ्गमे
At Kṛtaśauca, she is Siṃhikā; in Kārtika, she is Atiśāṅkarī; at Utpalāvartaka, she is Lolā; at Śoṇasaṅgama, she is Subhadrā.
माता सिद्धवने लक्ष्मीरनङ्गा भरताश्रमे । जालन्धरे विश्वमुखी तारा किष्किन्धपर्वते
In Siddhavana, she is Lakṣmī; at Ananga, she is Māta; at Bharata's hermitage, she is Anangā; at Jālandhara, she is Viśvamukhī; at Kiṣkindha mountain, she is Tārā.
देवदारुवने पुष्टिर्मेधा काश्मीरमण्डले । भीमा देवी हिमाद्रौ तु तुष्टिर्विश्वेश्वरे तथा
In Devadāru forest, she is Puṣṭi; in Kāśmīra region, she is Medhā; on Himālaya, she is Bhīmā Devī; at Viśveśvara, she is Tuṣṭi.
कपालमोचने शुद्धिर्माता कामावरोहणे । शङ्खोद्धारे धरा नाम धृतिः पिण्डारके तथा
At Kapālamocana, she is Śuddhi; at Kāmāvarohaṇa, she is Māta; at Śaṅkhoddhāra, she is called Dharā; at Piṇḍāraka, she is Dhṛti.
कला तु चन्द्रभागायामच्छोदे शिवधारिणी । वेणायाममृता नाम बदर्यामुर्वशी तथा
At Candrabhāgā, she is Kalā; at Acchoda, she is Śivadhāriṇī; at Veṇā, she is Amṛtā; at Badarī, she is Urvaśī.
औषधिश्चोत्तरकुरौ कुशद्वीपे कुशोदका । मन्मथा हेमकूटे तु कुमुदे सत्यवादिनी
In Uttarakuru, she is Auṣadhi; on Kuśadvīpa, she is Kuśodakā; at Hemakūṭa, she is Manmathā; at Kumuda, she is Satyavādinī.
अश्वत्थे वन्दनीया तु निधिर्वैश्रवणालये । गायत्री वेदवदने पार्वती शिवसन्निधौ
At the Aśvattha tree, she is Vandanīyā; at Vaiśravaṇa's abode, she is Nidhi; in the mouth of the Vedas, she is Gāyatrī; in Śiva's presence, she is Pārvatī.
देवलोके तथेन्द्राणी ब्रह्मास्येषु सरस्वती । सूर्यबिम्बे प्रभा नाम मातॄणां वैष्णवी मता
In the world of the gods, she is Indrāṇī; in Brahmā's mouths, she is Sarasvatī; in the orb of the sun, she is called Prabhā; among the Mothers, she is known as Vaiṣṇavī.
अरुन्धती सतीनां तु रामासु च तिलोत्तमा । चित्ते ब्रह्मकला नाम शक्तिः सर्वशरीरिणाम्
Among the virtuous wives, she is Arundhatī; among the Rāma women, she is Tilottamā; in the mind, she is called Brahmakalā; she is the power in all embodied beings.
इमान्यष्ट शतानि स्युः पीठानि जनमेजय । तत्संख्याकायस्तदीशान्यो देव्यश्च परिकीर्तिताः
These eight hundred seats, O Janamejaya, are the pīṭhas; the goddesses presiding over them are named according to their number.
सतीदेव्यङ्गभूतानि पीठानि कथितानि च । अन्यान्यपि प्रसङ्गेन यानि मुख्यानि भूतले
The pīṭhas that are parts of Satī's body have been described, along with other principal ones on earth mentioned incidentally.
यः स्मरेच्छृणुयाद्वापि नामाष्टशतमुत्तमम् । सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तो देवीलोकं परं व्रजेत्
Whoever remembers or hears these eight hundred excellent names will be freed from all sins and attain the supreme realm of the Goddess.
एतेषु सर्वपीठेषु गच्छेद्यात्राविधानतः । सन्तर्पयेच्च पित्रादीञ्छ्राद्धादीनि विधाय च
In all these sacred seats, one should go according to the prescribed pilgrimage rites, and after performing śrāddha and other rituals, one should satisfy the ancestors and others.
कुर्याच्च महतीं पूजां भगवत्या विधानतः । क्षमापयेज्जगधात्रीं जगदम्बां मुहुर्मुहुः
One should perform a great worship of the Goddess according to the injunctions, and repeatedly beg forgiveness from the Mother of the universe, the Sustainer of the world.
कृतकृत्यं स्वमात्मानं जानीयाज्जनमेजय । भक्ष्यभोज्यादिभिः सर्वान्ब्राह्मणान्भोजयेत्ततः
O Janamejaya, one should consider oneself fulfilled in duty, and then feed all the Brāhmaṇas with various foods and delicacies.
सुवासिनीः कुमारीश्च बटुकादींस्तथा नृप । तस्मिन्क्षेत्रे स्थिता ये तु चाण्डालाद्या अपि प्रभो
O King, one should also honor married women, maidens, young boys, and even those like Cāṇḍālas who reside in that place.
देवीरूपाः स्मृताः सर्वे पूजनीयास्ततो हि ते । प्रतिग्रहादिकं सर्वं तेषु क्षेत्रेषु वर्जयेत्
All of them are to be regarded as forms of the Goddess and therefore worthy of worship; in those sacred places, one must avoid all acts of receiving gifts and similar activities.
यथाशक्ति पुरश्चर्यां कुर्यान्मन्त्रस्य सत्तमः । मायाबीजेन देवेशीं तत्तत्पीठाधिवासिनीम्
According to one's ability, the best of mantra practitioners should perform the prescribed rites, worshipping the Goddess, the Mistress of Māyā, who resides in each respective seat, with the seed-mantra.
पूजयेदनिशं राजन् पुरश्चरणकृद्भवेत् । वित्तशाठ्यं न कुर्वीत देवीभक्तिपरो नरः
O King, one should worship day and night and perform the prescribed rites; a person devoted to the Goddess should not act with greed for wealth.
य एवं कुरुते यात्रां श्रीदेव्याः प्रीतमानसः । सहस्रकल्पपर्यन्तं ब्रह्मलोके महत्तरे
Whoever undertakes such a pilgrimage to Śrī Devī with a heart full of devotion dwells, along with his ancestors, in the highest Brahmā world for a thousand kalpas.
वसन्ति पितरस्तस्य सोऽपि देवीपुरे तथा । अन्ते लब्ध्वा परं ज्ञानं भवेन्मुक्तो भवाम्बुधेः
His ancestors dwell there, and he too resides in the city of the Goddess; at the end, attaining supreme knowledge, he becomes liberated from the ocean of existence.
नामाष्टशतजापेन बहवः सिद्धतां गताः । यत्रैतल्लिखितं साक्षात्पुस्तके वापि तिष्ठति
By reciting the eight hundred names, many have attained perfection; wherever this is written or kept in a book—
ग्रहमारीभयादीनि तत्र नैव भवन्ति हि । सौभाग्यं वर्धते नित्यं यथा पर्वणि वारिधिः
There, dangers from planets, diseases, and fears do not occur; good fortune increases continually, just as the ocean swells at the full moon.
न तस्य दुर्लभं किञ्चिन्नामाष्टशतजापिनः । कृतकृत्यो भवेन्नूनं देवीभक्तिपरायणः
For the one who recites the eight hundred names, nothing is difficult to obtain; devoted to the Goddess, he is certainly fulfilled in all duties.
नमन्ति देवतास्तं वै देवीरूपो हि स स्मृतः । सर्वथा पूज्यन्ते देवैः किं पुनर्मनुजोत्तमैः
The gods bow to him, for he is regarded as a form of the Goddess; he is always worshipped by the gods—how much more so by the best of men.
श्राद्धकाले पठेदेतन्नामाष्टशतमुत्तमम् । तृप्तास्तत्पितरः सर्वे प्रयान्ति परमां गतिम्
If one recites these excellent eight hundred names at the time of śrāddha, all the ancestors are satisfied and attain the highest state.
