Viśvāmitra, having left the city, approached the king as he was departing, and spoke these harsh words.
Give me the gold for the fee and then depart, O king; or say, 'I will not give it,' for I have renounced the gold.
Take the entire kingdom if greed persists; if you consider it given, O king, then give what you have promised.
To Gādheya, who was speaking thus, Hariścandra, the king, bowed, his heart deeply afflicted, and with folded hands spoke.

I am a Kshatriya, a king born of the Solar dynasty, the performer of the Rājasūya sacrifice, and one desired by people.
How could I, having accepted from you, fail to act? By all means, your debt must be repaid, O best of twice-born.
Be at ease; I will give you the gold you desire. Wait for a while until I obtain the wealth.
Viśvāmitra said: From where, O king, will you now obtain wealth? Your kingdom is lost, as are your treasury and your means of acquiring riches.
Your hope for wealth is in vain, O ruler. What can I do? How can I torment you, who are destitute, out of greed?
Therefore, O king, say now that you will not give. Abandoning my great hope, I will go elsewhere.

Hearing these words of the Brahmin as he departed, the king replied to the sage: 'Be patient, I will give.'
I have my own body, my wife, and my son, all unharmed. By selling one of these, I will surely pay your debt, O Brahmin.
See, O best of Brahmins, there is a buyer in the city of Vārāṇasī. I will go there with my wife and son and become a servant.
Take the full measure of gold, together with the two loads, O sage. Having given all at its price, be satisfied, O mountain-like one.
Thus speaking, he went with his wife and son, together with his beloved Umā, to where Śaṅkara himself resides.

Then, reaching the Bhāgīrathī, he bathed and offered libations to the gods. Having worshipped the deities, he looked in all directions.
Entering the divine city of Vārāṇasī, the lord of the earth thought, 'This is not enjoyed by mortals; it belongs to the Trident-bearer.'
Afflicted by sorrow, he went on foot with his troubled wife. Entering the city, the king then found reassurance.
There he saw the best of sages, a Brahmin seeking payment. Seeing him approach, Hariścandra became humble and respectful.

The king said: 'O Brahmin, by the power of knowledge and austerity, the month is not yet fully complete; only a day and a half remain. Please wait for that, nothing more.'
Vishvamitra said: 'So be it, great king. I will come again. But if you do not give it today, I will lay a curse upon you.'
Having said this, the sage departed, and the king then thought, 'How shall I give the promised reward to him?'
