The merit I have accumulated from birth and through ascetic practice and study—O wise one, wager your own merit earned by austerity against mine.
If I do not immediately bring down this king, who is excessively praised, a liar, a giver of desires, and a great villain—
Let all the merit I have gathered since birth be destroyed; otherwise, let all the merit you have gained be forfeited—let this be our wager.
Having made the wager, the two sages, quarreling, departed in great anger to their own hermitages and heavenly realms.

Hearing his words, the woman wiped her tears from her face and spoke to Hariścandra, the foremost king.
The woman said: 'O king, Viśvāmitra, the great sage, is troubling me; he performs fierce austerities in the forest for my sake.'

The king said: 'Be at ease, O wide-eyed one, you shall not suffer. I will restrain that sage, devoted to austerity.'
Thus comforting the woman, the king quickly approached the sage, bowed his head, and spoke to him.
'O master, why do you torment your body with austerity? For what purpose is this effort? Tell me truly, O wise one.'
'O descendant of Gādhi, whatever you desire, I shall fulfill it. Arise, arise quickly; enough of this severe austerity.'
In my domain, O all-knowing one, no one should ever perform such harsh austerity—never anything dreadful that brings suffering to the people.

Filled with wrath in his mind, he devised retaliation, considering in many ways a fierce demon-form.
He sent to that place a being in the form of a boar; that mighty, colossal Mahākāla made a terrifying roar.

Seeing them arrive, distressed by fear, the king then asked, 'What is the danger? Why have you come to me? Speak, all of you.'
I do not fear gods or demons, O guards; from where has this fear arisen? Let them tell me directly.
