व्यास उवाच पुत्रमाह वृथा नाम कृतं ते दुष्टकर्मणा
Vyāsa said: The father spoke, 'Your name is made vain by your wicked deed.'
गच्छ दूरं सुमंदात्मन्दुराचार गृहान्मम
'Go far away, O slow-witted one, of evil conduct, from my house.'
कुपितं पितरं प्राह क्व गच्छामिति वै मुहुः
He repeatedly asked his angry father, 'Where shall I go?'
श्वपचस्य कृतं कर्म द्विजदारापहारणम्
'The act of taking a brāhmaṇa's wife is the deed of an outcaste.'
नहि पुत्रेण पुत्रार्थी त्वया च कुलपांसना
'Neither by you, a disgrace to the family, nor by a son, does one seeking a son obtain a son.'
स निशम्य पितुर्वाक्यं कुपितस्य महात्मनः
Hearing the words of his great and angry father,
सत्यव्रतस्तदा तत्र श्वपाकैः सह वर्तते
Satyavrata then lived there among the outcastes.
यदा निष्कासितः पित्रा कुपितेन महात्मना 7.10.
When he was expelled by his great and angry father,
तस्मात्सत्यव्रतस्तस्मिन्बभूव क्रोधसंयुतः
Therefore, Satyavrata became filled with anger at that time.
केनचित्कारणेनाथ पिता तस्य महीपतिः
Then, for some reason, his father, the king,
न ववर्ष तदा तस्मिन्विषये पाकशासनः
At that time, Indra, the lord of rain, did not shower rain in that land.
विश्वामित्रस्तदा दारांस्तस्मिंस्तु विषये नृप
Then, O king, Viśvāmitra's wives in that land
कातरा तत्र संजाता भार्या कौशिकस्य ह
became fearful there, the wives of Kauśika.
बालकान्क्षुधयाऽऽक्रांतान्रुदतः पश्यती भृशम्
Seeing their children afflicted by hunger, crying intensely,
चिंतयामास दुःखार्ता तोकान्वीक्ष्य क्षुधाऽऽतुरान्
Distressed, she began to think, seeing her children tormented by hunger,
न मे त्राताऽस्ति पुत्राणां पतिर्मे नास्ति सन्निधौ
"There is no protector for my sons, and my husband is not present."
धनहीना च मां त्यक्त्वा तपस्तप्तं गतः पतिः
"Deprived of wealth, my husband abandoned me and went to perform austerities."
बालानां भरणं केन करोमि पतिना विना 7.10.
"How can I provide for the children without my husband?"
एकं सुतं तु विक्रीय द्रव्येण कियता पुनः
"By selling one son for a small amount of money again—"
सर्वेषां मारणं नाद्धा युक्तं मम विपर्यये
"It is certainly not right for me to cause the death of them all in my misfortune."
हृदयं कठिनं कृत्वा संचिंत्य मनसा सती
Having hardened her heart, the faithful wife, after considering in her mind,
मुनिपत्नी गले बद्ध्वा मध्यमं पुत्रमौरसम्
the sage's wife tied a rope around the neck of her own middle son.
दृष्टा सत्यव्रतेनाऽऽर्ता तापसी शोकसंयुता
She, the suffering ascetic woman, was seen by Satyavrata, filled with sorrow.
रुदंतं बालकं कंठे बद्ध्वा नयसि काऽधुना
"Where are you taking this crying boy, tied by the neck, O lady?"
ऋषिपत्न्युवाच विक्रेतुमौरसं कामं गमिष्ये विषमेऽ सुतम्
The sage's wife said: "I am going to sell my own son, as I wish, in this hardship."
अन्नं नास्ति पतिर्मुक्त्वा गतस्तप्तं नृप क्वचित्
"There is no food, and my husband, having left, has gone somewhere to perform austerities, O king."
राजोवाच तावदेव पतिस्तेऽत्र वनाच्चैवाऽऽगमिष्यति
The king said: Your husband will return here from the forest very soon.
वृक्षे तवाऽऽश्रमाभ्याशे भक्ष्यं किंचिन्निरंतरम् 7.10.
There is always some food on the tree near your hermitage.
इत्युक्ता सा तदा तेन राज्ञा कौशिककामिनी
Thus addressed by the king at that time, the woman who desired Kauśika—
सोऽभवद्गालवो नाम गलबंधान्महातपाः
He became known as Gālava, the great ascetic bound at the neck.
