मन्त्रितो वेदमन्त्रैश्च पुत्रार्थं तस्य भूपतेः । राजा तद्यज्ञसदनं प्रविष्टस्तृषितो निशि
That vessel was consecrated with Vedic mantras for the king's desire for a son. At night, the king, thirsty, entered the sacrificial hall.
विप्रान्दृष्ट्वा शयानान्स पपौ मन्त्रजलं स्वयम् । भार्यार्थं संस्कृतं विप्रैर्मन्त्रितं विधिनोद्धृतम्
Seeing the Brahmins asleep, he drank the mantra-infused water himself, which had been prepared by the Brahmins for his wife, and ritually drawn.
पीतं राज्ञा तृषार्तेन तदज्ञानान्नृपोत्तम । व्युदकं कलशं दृष्ट्वा तदा विप्रा विशङ्किताः
The king, overcome by thirst, drank it unknowingly, O best of kings. When the Brahmins saw the vessel empty, they became anxious.
पप्रच्छुस्ते नृपं केन पीतं जलमिति द्विजाः । राज्ञा पीतं विदित्वा ते ज्ञात्वा दैवबलं महत्
The Brahmins asked the king, 'Who drank the water?' Realizing that the king had drunk it, they understood the great power of fate.
इष्टिं समापयामासुर्गतास्ते मुनयो गृहान् । गर्भं दधार नृपतिस्ततो मन्त्रबलादथ
They completed the sacrifice and the sages returned to their homes. By the power of the mantras, the king then conceived.
ततः काले स उत्पन्नः कुक्षिं भित्त्वाऽस्य दक्षिणाम् । पुत्रं निष्कासमायासुर्मन्त्रिणस्तस्य भूपतेः
In due time, a son was born, breaking forth from his right side. The ministers sought to extract the prince from the king's body.
देवानां कृपया तत्र न ममार महीपतिः । कं धास्यति कुमारोऽयं मन्त्रिणश्चुक्रुशुर्भृशम्
By the grace of the gods, the king did not die there. The ministers cried out in distress, 'Who will care for this boy?'
तदेन्द्रो देशिनीं प्रादान्मां धातेत्यवदद्वचः । सोऽभवद्बलवान् राजा मान्धाता पृथिवीपतिः । तदुत्पत्तिस्तु भूपाल कथिता तव विस्तरात्
Then Indra gave him the name 'Mam Dhata' (I will sustain), saying these words. He became the mighty king Mandhata, lord of the earth. Thus, O king, his birth has been described to you in detail.
सत्यव्रताख्यानवर्णनम् व्यास उवाच मांधाता पृथिवीं सर्वामजयन्नृपतीश्वरः
The Story of Satyavrata. Vyasa said: Mandhata, lord of kings, conquered the entire earth.
दस्यवोऽस्य भयत्रस्ता ययुर्गिरिगुहासु च
His enemies, terrified with fear, fled into mountain caves.
तस्य बिंदुमती भार्या शशबिंदोः सुताऽभवत्
His wife Bindumatī was the daughter of Śaśabindu.
तस्यामुत्पादयामास मांधाता द्वौ सुतौ नृप
From her, Māndhātā begot two sons, O King.
पुरुकुत्सात्ततोऽरण्यः पुत्रः परमधार्मिकः
From Purukutsa was born Araṇya, a son of supreme righteousness.
हर्यश्वस्तस्य पुत्रोऽभूद्धार्मिकः परमार्थवित्
Haryaśva was his son, righteous and a knower of the highest truth.
अरुणस्य सुतः श्रीमान्सत्यव्रत इति श्रुतः
Aruṇa's son, renowned as Satyavrata, was illustrious.
स पापात्मा विप्रभार्यां हृतवान्काममोहितः
He, overcome by desire, committed sin by taking a brāhmaṇa's wife.
मिलिता ब्राह्मणास्तत्र राजानमरुणं नृप
There, the brāhmaṇas gathered and approached King Aruṇa.
पप्रच्छ राजा तान्विप्रान्दुःखितान्पुरवासिनः 7.10.
The king questioned those brāhmaṇas, who were distressed, O King.
तन्निशम्य द्विजा वाक्यं राज्ञो विनयपूर्वकम्
Hearing the king's words, the brāhmaṇas replied with due respect.
ब्राह्मणा ऊचुः विवाहिता विप्रकन्या बलेन बलिनां वर
The brāhmaṇas said: 'O best of the strong, a brāhmaṇa maiden was forcibly married.'
व्यास उवाच पुत्रमाह वृथा नाम कृतं ते दुष्टकर्मणा
Vyāsa said: The father spoke, 'Your name is made vain by your wicked deed.'
गच्छ दूरं सुमंदात्मन्दुराचार गृहान्मम
'Go far away, O slow-witted one, of evil conduct, from my house.'
कुपितं पितरं प्राह क्व गच्छामिति वै मुहुः
He repeatedly asked his angry father, 'Where shall I go?'
श्वपचस्य कृतं कर्म द्विजदारापहारणम्
'The act of taking a brāhmaṇa's wife is the deed of an outcaste.'
नहि पुत्रेण पुत्रार्थी त्वया च कुलपांसना
'Neither by you, a disgrace to the family, nor by a son, does one seeking a son obtain a son.'
स निशम्य पितुर्वाक्यं कुपितस्य महात्मनः
Hearing the words of his great and angry father,
सत्यव्रतस्तदा तत्र श्वपाकैः सह वर्तते
Satyavrata then lived there among the outcastes.
यदा निष्कासितः पित्रा कुपितेन महात्मना 7.10.
When he was expelled by his great and angry father,
तस्मात्सत्यव्रतस्तस्मिन्बभूव क्रोधसंयुतः
Therefore, Satyavrata became filled with anger at that time.
केनचित्कारणेनाथ पिता तस्य महीपतिः
