"I am not your daughter, O father, such a sinner as you suppose, O king, deluded by doubt about appearances."
"Bow to the sage, O king—Cyavana of the Bhargava line, O father. Ask him everything; he will tell you all in detail."
Hearing his daughter's words, Śaryāti quickly went there, bowed to the sage, and respectfully asked him.
The king said: Tell me your story, Bhārgava, as it is fitting. How did your sight return, and where did your old age go?
I have a great doubt upon seeing your exceedingly beautiful form. Speak in detail, O Brahman; hearing it, I shall find happiness.
Cyavana said: The two Aśvins, physicians of the gods, have come here. Out of compassion, they have rendered me a favor, O best of kings.
I granted them a boon in return for their help: In the king's sacrifice, I will make both of them drink soma.
Thus, I have regained my youth and clear sight. Be at ease, great king; please sit upon this auspicious seat.
Thus addressed by the sage, the king, along with his wife, sat comfortably and conversed with the great-souled one.
Then, Bhārgava spoke to the king, reassuring him: I will have you perform the royal sacrifice; prepare the necessary offerings.
I have promised them that both shall drink soma. This must be done, O foremost of kings, in your grand sacrifice.
I will restrain Indra, even if he is angry, by the power of my energy. I will make you, O king, offer soma in your soma sacrifice.
Then Śaryāti, the king, became extremely pleased and honored Cyavana's words, O great king.
Honoring Cyavana, the king departed for his city with his wife, greatly satisfied, discussing the sage's deeds.
On an auspicious day suitable for sacrifice, Śaryāti, endowed with all desired prosperity, established a supreme sacrificial altar.
Having gathered and honored the sages, with Vasiṣṭha at their head, Bhārgava Cyavana began to officiate for the king.
When the sacrifice was thus arranged, all the gods, along with Indra, arrived, and the two Aśvins came there for the soma.
Indra, seeing both Aśvins there, became suspicious and asked all the gods: Why have these two come here?
They are physicians, not entitled to soma; who brought them here? The immortals did not reply, while the king's sacrifice was underway.
Then Cyavana offered soma to the divine Aśvins. Indra tried to stop him, saying: Do not give them this offering.
There Cyavana said: How are these two sons of the Sun not eligible to partake, and why are the Nāsatyas excluded? Speak the truth, O lord of Śacī.
They are not born from mixed unions, but are sons of the Sun's lawful wife. By what fault, O Indra, are the Nāsatyas, the foremost physicians, not permitted to drink Soma?
A decision must be made here in the sacrifice, O Śakra, by all the gods. I will cause them to receive Soma; I have made them Soma-drinkers.
That king was sent by me, O Maghavan, to the sacrifice. For this purpose I will act; my word is true, O mighty one.
Śakra was aided by them, and they granted him renewed youth. Therefore, I must certainly repay their kindness in every way.
Indra said: These two, made physicians, are the Nāsatyas, despised by the gods. Neither of them is fit to drink Soma; do not let them receive the offering.
Cyavana said: Restrain your anger over Ahalyā's affair, which is pointless today. O slayer of Vṛtra, why are the Nāsatyas, sons of the gods, not eligible to drink Soma?
When such a dispute arose, no one among the kings spoke. By the power of his austerity, the fiery Bhārgava caused the two to receive the Soma.
Vyāsa said: When the offering was given, O king, Vāsava became greatly enraged and spoke to Cyavana there, displaying his own strength.
Do not, O brahmin, transgress these boundaries. I will slay you, my enemy, as I did another Viśvarūpa.
