The Divine Mother, radiant and compassionate, addressed Brahma, the lotus-born, with words of profound instruction. “Now, Brahma, go at once with Mahasarasvati to the world of truth. From the fourfold seed, bring forth all beings at this very moment. The subtle bodies of all creatures, with their actions and destinies, remain established in time; cause them to exist once more, just as before. Let the entire universe—moving and unmoving—come into being, endowed with its own qualities, through the causes called time, action, and inherent nature. And remember, you must always honor and worship Vishnu, for he is ever superior, being filled with the pure quality of sattva. Whenever you encounter a task too difficult to accomplish, Hari himself will descend to earth and fulfill it. Whether taking birth among animals, in other forms, or as a human, Janardana will destroy the daityas, the enemies of the gods. Bhava, too, will be your powerful ally; after creating all the gods, delight yourself as you wish. The brahmanas, kshatriyas, and vaishyas, attentive and devoted, will worship you all with various sacrifices and proper offerings. By the utterance of my name in all sacrifices, you gods will always be satisfied and content. And Shiva, who is beyond all qualities, must also be honored and diligently worshipped in every sacrificial rite. Whenever fear arises for the gods due to the daityas, my own powers will manifest in splendid forms and destroy them. Varahi, Vaishnavi, Gauri, Narasimhi, Sadasiva, and others—O lotus-born, you must accomplish their tasks as well. Always recite this nine-syllabled mantra, along with its seed and meditation. O wise Brahma, by this mantra, all tasks can be accomplished. Know that this is the supreme of mantras; it should always be held in your heart for the attainment of all desires and purposes. Having spoken thus, the Mother of the Universe, smiling beautifully, turned to Hari and said, ‘Vishnu, go and accept this enchanting Mahalakshmi. She will always reside upon your chest—of this there is no doubt. For your delight, I have given you this auspicious power, the bestower of all things. Never disregard her; she is always to be honored. This union, known as Lakshmi-Narayana, has been established by me. I have performed sacrifices for the sake of life and for the gods in every way. One must always act in harmony and without opposition with these three. You, the Creator, Shiva, and the other gods are all born from my qualities. All will certainly be respected and worshipped by everyone, without a doubt. Those humans whose minds are deluded and who create division will go to hell because of that division; there is no doubt about this. He who is Hari is directly Shiva, and Shiva himself is Hari. Whoever establishes a distinction between these two becomes destined for hell. Similarly, the Creator is to be understood in the same way; do not deliberate further about this. Yet, there is a difference of qualities; listen, O Vishnu, and I will tell you. Let the primary quality of sattva be yours for the contemplation of the Supreme Self. Even in secondary roles, the two are known as possessing rajas and tamas. In all transformations and distinctions, together with Lakshmi, you should enjoy with her, being endowed with the quality of rajas. The seed of speech, the king of desire, and the third, the seed of maya—this mantra, O beloved of Rama, which I have given, grants the highest reality. Having received it, recite it always and enjoy as you wish. You will have no fear of death, O Vishnu, nor any fear arising from time. As long as this play of mine continues, it is certain. When I withdraw, I will take back everything, both moving and unmoving in the universe. Then, surely, you all will merge into me. This mantra must always be remembered; it grants desires and also liberation. It should be performed together with the chant of udgitha by one desiring auspiciousness. After establishing Vaikuntha, O Supreme Person, you must reside there and enjoy as you wish, contemplating me, the Eternal One.” Having thus spoken to Vasudeva, the supreme Prakriti, possessed of the three qualities and yet beyond them, turned to Shiva and addressed him with immortal words. She said, “Take Haragauri, the enchanting Mahakali as your consort. Having established Kailasa as your abode, enjoy as you wish. Let your primary quality be tamas, and the secondary ones be sattva and rajas. For the destruction of demons, enjoy with rajas and tamas. Also, perform austerities and remembrance of the Supreme Self. The quality of sattva, peaceful and pure, must always be accepted, O sinless one. In every way, you three are the causes of creation, preservation, and destruction. In this world, there is nothing that exists apart from these; whatever is seen as mere substance is indeed composed of the three qualities. In this world, that which is seen as without qualities has never existed nor will exist; the Supreme Self is without qualities, but is never an object of perception. O best of Shiva, I am both with qualities and without qualities, according to the circumstance; I am always the cause, O Shambhu, and never the effect. With qualities, I am the cause; without qualities, I am near the Spirit. The great principle, ego, the qualities, and also sound and the rest—all these move about, day and night, in the forms of cause and effect. Ego is my effect, established as threefold; from ego arises the great principle, which is called intellect.” Thus, the Divine Mother revealed the mysteries of creation and the interplay of the three gunas, guiding the gods in their cosmic roles and affirming her own supreme nature as both the source and the ultimate end of all that exists.
