गणेश उवाच दारग्रहो हि दुःखाय न सुखाय कदाचन
Ganesha said: The taking of a wife is always a cause of sorrow, never of happiness.
हरिभक्तेर्व्यवायश्च तपस्यानाशकारकः
Sexual intercourse is destructive to devotion to Hari and to the fruits of austerity.
गर्भवासकरः शश्वत्तत्त्वज्ञाननिकृन्तकः
It leads to repeated births in the womb and severs true knowledge of reality.
गेहोऽयं कारणानां च सर्वमायाकरण्डकम्
This house is the basket of all causes and the very container of illusion.
निवर्तस्व महाभागे पश्यान्यं कामुकं पतिम्
Withdraw, O highly fortunate one, and seek another lover as your husband.
इत्येवं वचनं श्रुत्वा कोपात्सा तं शशाप ह
Hearing these words, she, in anger, cursed him.
इत्याकर्ण्य सुरश्रेष्ठस्तां शशाप शिवात्मजः
Hearing this, the best of the gods, the son of Shiva, cursed her.
तत्पश्चान्महतां शापाद्वृक्षस्त्वं भवितेति च 3.46.
Then, by the curse of the great ones, you shall become a tree.
शापं श्रुत्वा तु तुलसी सा रुरोद पुनः पुनः
Hearing the curse, Tulasi wept again and again.
गणेश्वर उवाच कलांशेन महाभागे स्वयं नारायणप्रिया
Ganesha said: O highly fortunate one, by a portion of yourself, you are beloved of Narayana himself.
प्रिया त्वं सर्वदेवानां श्रीकृष्णस्य विशेषतः ३३' हरेराराधनव्यग्रो बदरीसन्निधिं ययौ
You are dear to all the gods, and especially to Shri Krishna. Absorbed in worship of Hari, he went to the vicinity of Badari.
जगाम तुलसी देवी हृदयेन विदूयता
The goddess Tulasi went, her heart afflicted.
पश्चान्मुनीन्द्रशापेन गणेशस्य च नारद
Then, by the curse of the best of sages and of Ganesha, O Narada—
ततः शङ्करशूलेन स ममारासुरेश्वरः
Then, by the trident of Shankara, the lord of the asuras died.
कथितश्चेतिहासस्ते श्रुतो धर्ममुखात्पुरा
This story has been told to you, as it was once heard from the mouth of Dharma.
ततः परशुरामोऽसौ जगाम तपसे वनम्
Then Parashurama went to the forest for austerity.
पूजितो वन्दितः सर्वैः सुरेन्द्रमुनिपुङ्गवैः 3.46.
He was worshipped and honored by all, by the best of gods and sages.
इदं गणपतेः खण्डं यः शृणोति समाहितः
Whoever listens attentively to this section of Ganesha—
अपुत्रो लभते पुत्रं श्रीगणेशप्रसादतः
A childless person obtains a son by the grace of Shri Ganesha.
यशस्विनं पुत्रिणं च विद्वांसं सुकवीश्वरम्
He gains a son who is renowned, learned, and an excellent poet.
सुशीलं च सदाचारं प्रशंस्यं वैष्णवं लभेत्
He obtains a son who is virtuous, of good conduct, praiseworthy, and devoted to Vishnu.
भक्त्या गणेशं संपूज्य वस्त्रालङ्कारचन्दनैः
By worshipping Ganesha with devotion, using garments, ornaments, and sandalwood paste,
मृतवत्सा काकवन्ध्या ब्रह्मन्पुत्रं लभेद्ध्रुवम्
A woman whose child has died or who is barren like a crow, O Brahman, certainly obtains a son.
संपूर्णं ब्रह्मवैवर्तं श्रुत्वा यल्लभते फलम्
Whatever fruit is gained by hearing the complete Brahmavaivarta,
वाञ्छां कृत्वा तु मनसि शृणोति परमास्थितः
Having made a wish in the mind, one listens with utmost concentration.
प्रदीयते वाचकाय स्वस्तिकं तिललड्डुकान् 3.46.
A swastika and sesame sweets are given to the reciter.
नारायणं नमस्कृत्य नरं चैव नरोत्तमम्
Having bowed to Narayana and also to Nara, the best among men,
ततस्तद्वचनात्तूर्णं समागत्य तवांतिकम्
Then, at your command, I quickly arrived before you.
ततो गणपतेः खंडमखंडभवखंडनम्
Then comes the section on Ganesha, the section on the undivided and divided existence.
श्रीकृष्णजन्मखंडं च जन्मादेः खंडनं नृणाम्
And the section on the birth of Shri Krishna, the section on the origin of birth among men.
