गुरुदत्तेन मन्त्रेण तपसेष्टसुखं लभेत्
By the mantra given by the guru, one obtains the happiness of austerity and sacrifice.
सर्वं जयति सर्वत्र विद्यया गुरुदत्तया
By the knowledge imparted by the guru, one conquers everything, everywhere.
विद्यान्धो वा धनान्धो वा यो मूढो न भजेद्गुरुम्
Whether blind in knowledge or wealth, the fool who does not honor the guru—
दरिद्रं पतितं क्षुद्रं नरबुद्ध्याऽऽचरेद्गुरुम्
should serve the guru, even if he is poor, fallen, or lowly, without judging with human reasoning.
पितरं मातरं भार्य्यां गुरुपत्नीं गुरुं परम्
One's father, mother, wife, the guru's wife, and the guru himself are supreme.
गुरुर्ब्रह्मा गुरुर्विष्णुर्गुरुर्देवो महेश्वरः 3.44.
The guru is Brahmā, the guru is Viṣṇu, the guru is indeed the god Maheśvara.
गुरुश्चन्द्रस्तथेन्द्रश्च वायुश्च वरुणोऽनलः
The guru is also the moon, likewise Indra, Vāyu, Varuṇa, and Agni.
नास्ति वेदात्परं शास्त्रं नहि कृष्णात्परः सुरः
There is no scripture higher than the Veda, and no god higher than Kṛṣṇa.
नास्ति क्षमावती भूमेः पुत्रान्नास्त्यपरः प्रियः
There is no one more forgiving than the earth, and no one dearer than a son.
शालग्रामात्परो यन्त्रो न क्षेत्रं भारतात्परम्
There is no sacred object greater than the Śālagrāma stone, nor any land greater than Bhārata.
मोक्षदानां यथा काशी वैष्णवानां यथा शिवः
As Kāśī is foremost among places granting liberation, so is Śiva among the Vaiṣṇavas.
न च विद्यासमो बन्धुर्नास्ति कश्चिद्गुरोः परः
There is no friend equal to knowledge, and no one superior to the guru.
गुरुस्त्रियां च पुत्रे चाप्यभवद्रामहेलनम्
Disrespect toward the guru, toward a woman, or toward a son, occurred even in the case of Rāma.
नारायण उवाच उवाच भगवांस्तत्र सत्यसारं परं वचः
Nārāyaṇa said: There, the Blessed Lord spoke words of supreme truth and essence.
श्रीविष्णुरुवाच नीतियुक्तं वेदसारं परिणामसुखावहम्
Śrī Viṣṇu said: That which is endowed with wisdom, the essence of the Veda, brings happiness in the end.
यथा ते गजवक्त्रश्च कार्त्तिकेयश्च पार्वति ।। । तथा परशुरामश्च भार्गवो नात्र संशयः ।। 3.44.
Just as Gajavaktra and Kārttikeya are sons of Pārvatī, so too is Paraśurāma, the descendant of Bhṛgu; there is no doubt about this.
नास्त्येषु स्नेहभेदश्च तव वा शंकरस्य च
There is no division of affection among them, nor between you and Śaṅkara.
पुत्रेण सार्द्धं पुत्रस्य विवादो दैवदोषतः
A dispute arose between the son and the father due to the fault of fate.
पुत्राभिधानं वेदेषु पश्य वत्से वरानने
See, O child, O beautiful-faced one, the designation 'son' in the Vedas.
पुत्रनामाष्टकं स्तोत्रं सामवेदोक्तमीश्वरि
O goddess, the hymn of eight names of the son is spoken in the Sāma Veda.
विष्णुरुवाच लम्बोदरं शूर्पकर्णं गजवक्त्रं गुहाग्रजम्
Viṣṇu said: Lambodara, Śūrpakarṇa, Gajavaktra, the elder brother of Guha—
अष्टाख्यार्थं च पुत्रस्य शृणु मातर्हरप्रिये
Hear, O beloved mother, the meaning of the eight names of the son.
ज्ञानार्थवाचको गश्च णश्च निर्वाणवाचकः
The syllable 'ga' denotes knowledge, and 'ṇa' signifies liberation.
एकशब्दः प्रधानार्थो दन्तश्च बलवाचकः
The single word primarily means 'chief', and 'danta' indicates strength.
दीनार्थवाचको हेश्च रम्बः पालकवाचकः
'He' expresses the sense of poverty, and 'ramba' denotes a protector.
विपत्तिवाचको विघ्नो नायकः खण्डनार्थकः ।। 3.44.
'Vighna' signifies adversity, and 'nāyaka' means leader; 'khaṇḍana' conveys the sense of destruction.
विष्णुदत्तैश्च नैवेद्यैर्यस्य लम्बं पुरोदरम्
He whose belly is prominent from the offerings given by Viṣṇu's devotees.
शूर्पाकारौ च यत्कर्णौ विघ्नवारणकारकौ
His ears are shaped like winnowing baskets, which serve to remove obstacles.
विष्णुप्रसादं मुनिना दत्तं यन्मूर्ध्नि पुष्पकम्
The flower garland placed on his head was given by the sage as Viṣṇu's favor.
गुहस्याग्रे च जातोऽयमाविर्भूतो हरालये
He was born before Guha and manifested in the abode of Hara.
