पपात भूमौ दन्तश्च सरक्तः शब्दयंस्तदा
The tooth fell to the ground, bloody, making a sound at that moment.

O brāhmaṇa, at that great sound, the earth trembled in fear.

पार्वत्युवाच अपेक्षा रहिता दासी तस्या वै जीवनं वृथा

All the grasses and mountain-born beings are equal to the Lord.
विचारं कर्तुमुचितं त्वं च धर्मविदां वरः

साक्ष्ये मिथ्यां को वदेद्वा द्वावेषां भ्रातरौ समौ
Who would speak falsely in testimony? These two brothers are both equal.
साक्षी सभायां यत्साक्ष्यं जानन्नप्यन्यथा वदेत्
A witness, even knowing the truth, who speaks otherwise in the assembly—
स याति कुम्भीपाकं च निपात्य शतपूरुषम्
He goes to Kumbhipaka, casting down a hundred men.
अहं विबोधितुं शक्ता यन्निर्णेत्री द्वयोरपि
I am able to discern, being the judge of both.
किंकराणां प्रभा तत्र नृपे वसति संसदि
There, in the king's assembly, the radiance of the servants resides.
सुचिरं तपसा प्राप्तं त्वदीयं चरणाम्बुजम्
Through long austerity, I have attained your lotus feet.
यत्किंचित्कोपशोकाभ्यामुक्तं मोहेन तत्परम् 3.44.
Whatever was spoken out of anger or grief, that was uttered in delusion.
त्वया यदि परित्यक्ता तदा पुत्रेण तेन किम्

असद्वंशप्रसूता या दुश्शीला ज्ञानवर्जिता
She who is born in a bad lineage, of bad conduct, and devoid of knowledge—
कुत्सितं पतितं मूढं दरिद्रं रोगिणं जडम्
Despicable, fallen, deluded, poor, diseased, and dull-witted—
हुताशनो वा सूर्य्यो वा सर्वतेजस्विनां वरः
Whether it be the fire-god or the sun, the best among all who possess brilliance—
महादानानि पुण्यानि व्रतान्यनशनानि च
Great and meritorious gifts, vows, and acts of fasting—
पुत्रोवाऽपि पिता वाऽपि बान्धवोऽथ सहोदरः
Whether a son, a father, a relative, or a brother—
इत्युक्त्वा स्वामिनं दुर्गा ददर्श पुरतो भृगुम्
Having spoken thus, Durgā saw Bhṛgu standing before her lord.
पार्वत्युवाच पुत्रोऽसि जमदग्नेश्च शिष्यो वै योगिनां गुरोः
Pārvatī said: You are the son of Jamadagni and the disciple of the guru of yogis.
माता ते रेणुका साध्वी पद्मांशा सत्कुलोद्भवा
Your mother is Reṇukā, a virtuous woman, a portion of Padmā, born in a noble family.
त्वं च रेणुकभूपस्य मनुवंशोद्भवस्य च 3.44.
And you are also descended from the king of Reṇukā and from the lineage of Manu.
कस्य दोषेण दुर्द्धर्षस्त्वं न जानेऽप्यशुद्धधीः
By whose fault, O difficult-to-conquer one, do you possess an impure mind? I do not know.
अमोघं प्राप्य पर्शुं च गुरुं च करुणानिधिम्
Having obtained the unfailing axe and a guru who is an ocean of compassion—
