अव्यर्थमस्त्रं हे भ्रातर्गुरुपुत्रे कथं क्षिपेः
O brother, how can you cast a weapon in vain at the son of your guru?
पर्शुं क्षिपन्तं कुपितं रक्तपद्मदलेक्षणम्
As he hurled the axe in anger, his eyes were red like lotus petals.
पुनर्गणेशं रामश्च प्रेरयामास कोपतः
Again, Rāma, out of wrath, urged Gaṇeśa.
गजाननः समुत्थाय धर्मं कृत्वा तु सक्षिणम्
Gajānana rose and established dharma, making it his witness.
मम भ्राता त्वमतिथिर्विद्यासम्बन्धतो ध्रुवम् 3.43.
You are my brother and, by the bond of knowledge, certainly my guest.
न ह्यहं कार्त्तवीर्य्यश्च भूपास्ते क्षुद्रजन्तवः
I am not Kārtavīrya, nor are those kings; they are insignificant creatures.
क्षणं तिष्ठ निवर्त्तस्व समरे ब्राह्मणातिथे
Pause for a moment, turn back in battle, O Brāhmaṇa guest.
नारायण उवाच पर्शुं क्षेप्तुं मनश्चक्रे प्रणम्य हरिशङ्करौ
Nārāyaṇa said: He resolved to throw the axe, bowing to Hari and Śaṅkara.
पर्शुं क्षिपन्तं कोपेन तं च रामं गजाननः
As Rāma hurled the axe in anger, Gajānana confronted him.
योगेन वर्द्धयामास शुण्डां तां कोटियोजनाम्
By his yoga, he extended his trunk to a hundred koṭi yojanas.
शतधा वेष्टयित्वा तु भ्रामयित्वा तु तत्र वै
Wrapping it a hundred times and spinning it there,
सप्तद्वीपांश्च शैलांश्च मेरुं चाखिलसागरान्
He encompassed the seven continents, the mountains, Meru, and all the oceans.
हस्तपादाद्यनाथं तं जडं सर्वांगकम्पितम्
He made him, helpless in hands and feet, dull and trembling in all limbs.
भूर्लोकं च भुवर्लोकं स्वर्लोकं च सुरेश्वरः
The lord of the gods encompassed Bhūrloka, Bhuvarloka, and Svargaloka.
गौरीलोकं शम्भुलोकं दर्शयामास नारद 3.43.
Nārada showed the realms of Gaurī and Śambhu.
पुनरुद्गिरणं चक्रे सनक्रमकरोदकम्
Again, he performed the act of utterance, making water with his hand.
मुमूर्षुं तं सन्तरन्तं पुनर्जग्राह लीलया
As he was about to die and crossing over, he playfully seized him again.
वैकुण्ठं दर्शयामास सलक्ष्मीकं चतुर्भुजम्
He showed Vaikuṇṭha, with Lakṣmī, and the four-armed form.
पुनः करं च योगेन वर्द्धयामास लीलया
Again, by yogic power and play, he restored his hand.
वृन्दावनं शृङ्गशतं शैलेन्द्रं रासमण्डलम्
He showed Vṛndāvana, the mountain with a hundred peaks, and the circle of the rāsa dance.
द्विभुजं मुरलीहस्तं सस्मितं सुमनोहरम्
He saw the two-armed one, holding a flute, smiling, supremely enchanting.
तेजसा कोटिसूर्य्याभं राधावक्षःस्थलस्थितम्
Radiant like ten million suns, he was situated on Rādhā’s chest.
क्षणेन लम्बमानं च भ्रामयित्वा पुनः पुनः भ्रूणहत्यादिकं पापं भृगोर्दूरं चकार ह
In a moment, swinging and spinning it again and again, he cast away the sin of Bhṛgu—such as the killing of a fetus—far away.
न भवेद्यातना नष्टा विना भोगेन पापजा
Suffering born of sin does not end without experiencing its result.
क्षणेन चेतनां प्राप्य भुवि वेगात्पपात ह 3.43.
In a moment, regaining consciousness, he fell swiftly to the earth.
सस्मार कवचं स्तोत्रं गुरुदत्तं सुदुर्लभम्
He remembered the rare armor and hymn given by his guru.
चिक्षेप पर्शुमव्यर्थं शिवतुल्यं च तेजसा
He hurled his axe, uselessly, shining with a radiance equal to Śiva.
पितुरव्यर्थमस्त्रं च दृष्ट्वा गणपतिः स्वयम्
Seeing his father's weapon rendered ineffective, Gaṇapati himself—
निपात्य पर्शुर्वेगेन च्छित्त्वा दन्तं समूलकम्
Struck down with the force of his tusk, he cut off the root of the tooth.
हाहेति शब्दमाकाशे देवाश्चक्रुर्महाभिया
With cries of 'Ha! Ha!' the gods made a great commotion in the sky.
