लज्जा नास्त्येव लज्जाया मतोऽयं सर्वसम्मतः
There is truly no shame in her; this is the opinion accepted by all.
सर्वशक्तिमती दुर्गा प्रकृत्या सा च शैलजा
Durga, endowed with all powers, is by nature the daughter of the mountain.
पञ्चधा प्रकृतिर्या च श्रीकृष्णस्य बभूव ह
That Prakriti, which became fivefold, belonged to Shri Krishna.
प्राणाधिष्ठातृदेवी या कृष्णस्य परमात्मनः
She who is the goddess presiding over life is of Krishna, the Supreme Self.
विद्याधिष्ठातृदेवी या सावित्री ब्रह्मणः प्रिया
She who is the goddess presiding over knowledge is Savitri, beloved of Brahma.
सरस्वती द्विधा भूत्वा कृष्णस्य मुख निर्गता
Sarasvati, having become twofold, emerged from the mouth of Krishna.
बुद्ध्यधिष्ठातृदेवी या ज्ञानसूः शक्तिसंयुता 3.42.
She who is the goddess presiding over intellect, the source of knowledge, endowed with power.
प्रकृतिः पञ्चधा भ्रातर्गोलोके च बभूव ह
Brother, Prakriti became fivefold also in Goloka.
विप्रेन्द्र नित्यं वैकुण्ठं ब्रह्माण्डात्परमुच्यते
O best of Brahmins, Vaikuntha is always said to be beyond the cosmic egg.
तत्र नारायणो देवः कृष्णार्द्धांशश्चतुर्भुजः
There, Narayana, the god, is present, four-armed, as a partial expansion of Krishna.
स्वयं कृष्णश्च गोलोके द्विभुजः श्यामसुन्दरः
Krishna himself, in Goloka, is two-armed and of dark, beautiful form.
शश्वद्गोगोपगोपीभिः संयुक्तो गोपरूपधृक्
He is always united with cows, cowherds, and cowherd maidens, assuming the form of a cowherd.
स्वेच्छामयः स्वतन्त्रस्तु परमानन्दरूपधृक्
He is of his own will, independent, and assumes the form of supreme bliss.
यतो भवन्ति विश्वानि स्थूलसूक्ष्मादिकानि च
From him arise all worlds, both gross and subtle and so forth.
गोलोक ऊर्ध्ववैकुण्ठात्पञ्चाशत्कोटियोजनः
Goloka is fifty crore yojanas above Vaikuntha.
इदं श्रुतं शम्भुवक्त्रान्मया ते कथितं द्विज
This I have heard from the mouth of Shambhu and have told you, O twice-born.
नारायण उवाच पर्शुहस्तस्स वै रामो निर्भयो गन्तुमुद्यतः
Nārāyaṇa said: Rāma, holding his axe, prepared to go forth without fear.
गणेश्वरस्तदा दृष्ट्वा शीघ्रमुत्थाय यत्नतः
Then Gaṇeśvara, seeing this, quickly rose with effort.
रामस्तं प्रेरयामास हुं कृत्वा तु पुनः पुनः
Rāma urged him repeatedly, uttering 'huṃ'.
पर्शुनिक्षेपणं कर्तुं मनश्चक्रे भृगुस्तदा
At that moment, Bhṛgu resolved in his mind to throw the axe.
अव्यर्थमस्त्रं हे भ्रातर्गुरुपुत्रे कथं क्षिपेः
O brother, how can you cast a weapon in vain at the son of your guru?
पर्शुं क्षिपन्तं कुपितं रक्तपद्मदलेक्षणम्
As he hurled the axe in anger, his eyes were red like lotus petals.
पुनर्गणेशं रामश्च प्रेरयामास कोपतः
Again, Rāma, out of wrath, urged Gaṇeśa.
गजाननः समुत्थाय धर्मं कृत्वा तु सक्षिणम्
Gajānana rose and established dharma, making it his witness.
मम भ्राता त्वमतिथिर्विद्यासम्बन्धतो ध्रुवम् 3.43.
You are my brother and, by the bond of knowledge, certainly my guest.
न ह्यहं कार्त्तवीर्य्यश्च भूपास्ते क्षुद्रजन्तवः
I am not Kārtavīrya, nor are those kings; they are insignificant creatures.
क्षणं तिष्ठ निवर्त्तस्व समरे ब्राह्मणातिथे
Pause for a moment, turn back in battle, O Brāhmaṇa guest.
नारायण उवाच पर्शुं क्षेप्तुं मनश्चक्रे प्रणम्य हरिशङ्करौ
Nārāyaṇa said: He resolved to throw the axe, bowing to Hari and Śaṅkara.
पर्शुं क्षिपन्तं कोपेन तं च रामं गजाननः
As Rāma hurled the axe in anger, Gajānana confronted him.
योगेन वर्द्धयामास शुण्डां तां कोटियोजनाम्
By his yoga, he extended his trunk to a hundred koṭi yojanas.
