Brahmā, in the battle of Tripura, formerly gave it to Śaṃkara.
Hara gave it to Gautama, and Gautama to Padmākṣa.
By wearing and reciting it, Brahmā became wise and powerful on earth; and Gautama, the best of sages, became equal to Śiva.
This is the protective amulet for victory over the universe, O Lord of creatures.
And the application for victory over the universe has been declared.
Om hrīṃ, to Durgatināśinī, svāhā—may she protect my head.
May she always protect both my ears—om, obeisance to Durgā.

Hrīṃ, śrīṃ, krūm—may she protect my teeth; klīm—may she protect both my lips.

May Mahākālī Durgā, svāhā, always protect my shoulders.

May the mantra 'Om hrīṃ durgāyai svāhā' always protect my hands and feet.

In the east, may Mahāmāyā protect me; in the southeast, may Kālikā be my guardian.

Thus, O child, I have told you the collection of all mantras in their entirety.
The merit gained by bathing in all sacred waters and performing all sacrifices—
—after duly worshipping the guru with garments, ornaments, and sandalwood—
—that person becomes victorious over the three worlds and destroys all enemies.
Even if a mantra is recited a hundred thousand times, it does not grant success—
—but this armor, as spoken in the Kāṇva branch, O Nārada, grants success.
Thus ends the forty-first chapter named 'The Armor that Destroys Misfortune' in the dialogue between Nārada and Nārāyaṇa, in the third section, Gaṇapati-khaṇḍa, of the great Purāṇa Śrī Brahmavaivarta.
Nārāyaṇa said: The son of Bhṛgu struck down Sahasrākṣa along with his sons.
After fighting for seven days, carefully employing the Brahmāstra, when Sahasrākṣa had fallen, Kārtavīrya Arjuna himself—
—mounted a golden chariot adorned with the finest jewels.
In battle, Paraśurāma saw that king.
He was adorned with a jeweled parasol and decorated with ornaments of gems.
The king, seeing that sage among sages, descended from his chariot—indeed!
He offered him auspicious blessings, and Rāma responded appropriately.
O Nārada, battle arose between both armies; all were wounded and battered, oppressed by Kārtavīrya.
Rāma, foremost among wielders of weapons, was struck by the king's shower of arrows.
