एवंरूपं परं बिभ्रद्भगवानेक एव सः
Thus, bearing this supreme form, the Blessed Lord alone exists.
सौतिरुवाच निर्जन्तु निर्जलं घोरं निर्वातं तमसा वृतम्
Sauti said: Barren of creatures, waterless, dreadful, windless, and enveloped in darkness—
वृक्षशैलसमुद्रादिविहीनं विकृताकृतम्
Devoid of trees, mountains, oceans, and the like, it was of a distorted appearance.
आलोच्य मनसा सर्वमेक एवासहायवान्
Having considered all this in mind, he alone, without any companion—
आविर्बभूवुः सर्गादौ पुंसो दक्षिणपार्श्वतः
At the beginning of creation, beings emerged from the southern side of the Man.
ततो महानहङ्कारः पञ्चतन्मात्र एव च
Then arose the great ego and the five subtle elements.
आविर्बभूव पश्चात्स्वयं नारायणः प्रभुः
Afterwards, Narayana himself, the Lord, manifested.
शंखचक्रगदापद्मधरः स्मेरमुखाम्बुजः
He held the conch, discus, mace, and lotus, his lotus-face smiling.
श्रीवत्सवक्षाः श्रीवासः श्रीविधिः श्रीविभावनः
Bearing the mark of Srivatsa on his chest, abode of Sri, origin of Sri, and source of prosperity.
कामदेवप्रभामृष्टरूपलावण्यसुन्दरः
Beautiful in form and charm, shining with the radiance of Kamadeva.
नारायण उवाच कारणं कारणानां च कर्म तत्कर्मकारणम् ।। 1.3.
Narayana said: The cause of causes, and the action that is the cause of that action.
तपस्तत्फलदं शश्वत्तपस्वीशं च तापसम्
Austerity, its eternal fruit, the lord of ascetics, and the ascetic himself.
निष्कामं कामरूपं च कामघ्नं कामकारणम्
Desireless, yet of the form of desire, destroyer of desire, and cause of desire.
वेदरूपं वेदभवं वेदोक्तफलदं फलम्
Of the form of the Vedas, the origin of the Vedas, the fruit declared by the Vedas, and the fruit itself.
इत्युक्त्वा भक्तियुक्तश्च स उवास तदाज्ञया
Having spoken thus, filled with devotion, he remained there by that command.
नारायणकृतं स्तोत्रं यः पठेत्सुसमाहितः
Whoever recites the hymn composed by Narayana with concentration—
पुत्रार्थी लभते पुत्रं भार्य्यार्थी लभते प्रियाम्
One desiring a son obtains a son; one desiring a wife obtains a beloved.
कारागारे विपद्ग्रस्तः स्तोत्रेणानेन मुच्यते
One afflicted in prison is freed by this hymn.
सौतिरुवाच शुद्धस्फटिकसङ्काशः पञ्चवक्त्रो दिगम्बरः
Sauti said: He appeared, pure as crystal, with five faces, clothed in the directions alone.
तप्तकाञ्चनवर्णाभ जटाभारधरो वरः
His form shone with the hue of molten gold, adorned with matted locks, and was most excellent.
त्रिशूलपट्टिशधरो जपमालाकरः परः 1.3.
He held a trident and a spear, bore a rosary in his hand, and was supreme.
मृत्योर्मृत्युरीश्वरश्च मृत्युर्मृत्युञ्जयः शिवः
He is Death to death itself, the Lord, the conqueror of death, Śiva.
पूर्णचन्द्रप्रभामृष्टमुखदृश्यो मनोहरः
His face and gaze shone with the radiance of the full moon, enchanting to behold.
श्रीकृष्पुरतः स्थित्वा तुष्टाव तं पुटाञ्जलिः
Standing before Śrī Kṛṣṇa, he praised him with joined palms.
महादेव उवाच प्रवरं जयदानां च वन्दे तमपराजितम्
Mahādeva said: I bow to that unconquered one, the foremost giver of victory and boons.
विश्वं विश्वेश्वरेशं च विश्वेशं विश्वकारणम्
He is the universe, the Lord of the lords of the universe, the Lord of the universe, the cause of the universe.
विश्वरक्षाकारणं च विश्वघ्नं विश्वजं परम्
He is the cause of the universe's protection, the destroyer of the universe, the supreme one born of the universe.
तेजःस्वरूपं तेजोदं सर्वतेजस्विनां वरम् नारायणं च संभाष्य स उवास तदाज्ञया
His very form is radiance, the giver of light, the best among all who possess brilliance; having addressed Nārāyaṇa, he remained there by his command.
इति शम्भुकृतं स्तोत्रं यो जनः संयतः पठेत्
Whoever, with self-restraint, recites this hymn composed by Śambhu—
सन्ततं वर्द्धते मित्रं धनमैश्वर्य्यमेव च
—his friends, wealth, and prosperity continually increase.
