धनं बलं च धनिनां शुचीनां च विशेषतः
For the wealthy, wealth is strength, especially for those who are pure.
हिंसा च हिंस्रजन्तूनां सतीनां पतिसेवनम्
For violent creatures, violence is strength; for chaste women, service to their husbands is their power.
बलं धर्मो गृहस्थानां भृत्यानां राजसेवनम्
For householders, righteousness is strength; for servants, service to the king is their power.
यतीनां च सदाचारो न्यासः संन्यासिनां बलम्
For ascetics, good conduct is strength; for renunciants, renunciation itself is their power.
पुण्यं बलं पुण्यवतां प्रजानां नृपतिर्बलम्
For the virtuous, merit is strength; for subjects, the king is their power.
जलं बलं च सस्यानां मत्स्यानां च जलं बलम्
For plants, water is strength; for fish, water is also their power.
विप्रः शान्तो रणोद्योगी नैव दृष्टो न च श्रुतः
A peaceful Brahmin who engages in battle has neither been seen nor heard of.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा राजेन्द्रो विरराम रणाजिरे 3.35.
Having spoken thus, the king ceased fighting on the battlefield.
रामस्य भ्रातरः सर्वे तीक्ष्णशस्त्रासिपाणयः
All the brothers of Rama, holding sharp swords and weapons,
रणोन्मुखांश्च तान्दृष्ट्वा मत्स्यराजो महाबलः
Seeing them eager for battle, the mighty king of the Matsyas,
शरजालेन राजेन्द्रो वारयामास तानपि
The king blocked them as well with a shower of arrows.
राजा चिक्षेप दिव्यास्त्रं शतसूर्य्यप्रभं मुने
O sage, the king hurled a divine weapon, shining like a hundred suns.
दिव्यास्त्रेणैव मुनयश्चिच्छिदुः सशरं धनुः १०५ न्यस्तशस्त्रं नृपं दृष्ट्वा मुनयो हर्षविह्वलाः
With a divine weapon, the sages cut the bow along with its arrow; seeing the king lay down his weapons, the sages were overcome with joy.
शूलनिक्षेपसमये वाग्बभूवाशरीरिणी
At the moment the spear was cast, a bodiless voice was heard.
शिवस्य कवचं दिव्यं दत्तं दुर्वाससा पुरा
The divine armor of Shiva was once given by Durvasa.
प्राणानां च प्रदातारं कवचं याचतं नृपम्
Ask the king for the armor, the giver of life.
तच्छूलं तं नृपं प्राप्य शतखण्डं गतं मुने 3.35.
O sage, when that spear struck the king, it shattered into a hundred pieces.
ययाचे कवचं भूपं जमदग्निसुतो महान्
The great son of Jamadagni requested the armor from the king.
गृहीत्वा कवचं तच्च शूलेनैव जघान ह महाबलिष्ठो गुणवांश्चन्द्रवंशसमुद्भवः
Having taken that armor, he struck with the spear; the mighty, virtuous one, born of the lunar dynasty.
नारद उवाच नारायण महाभाग श्रोतुं कौतूहलं मम
Narada said: O blessed Narayana, I am eager to hear.
नारायण उवाच ब्रह्माण्डविजयं नाम सर्वावयवरक्षणम्
Narayana said: It is called the 'Conquest of the Universe,' the protection of all limbs.
पुरा दुर्वाससा दत्तं मत्स्यराजाय धीमते
Long ago, Durvasa gave it to the wise king of the fish.
स्थिते च कवचे देहे नास्ति मृत्युश्च जीविनाम्
While the armor remains on the body, there is no death for the living.
यद्धृत्वा पठनाद्बाणः शिवत्वं प्राप लीलया
By reciting and wearing it, Bana easily attained the state of Shiva.
वीरश्रेष्ठो वीरभद्रः साम्बोऽभूद्धारणाद्यतः
The foremost of heroes, Virabhadra, became Sambo by wearing it.
हिरण्याक्षश्च विजयी चाभवद्धारणाद्धि सः
And Hiranyaksha became victorious by wearing it.
जैगीषव्यो महायोगी पठनाद्धारणाद्यतः अगस्त्यश्च पुलस्त्यश्चाप्यभवद्विश्वपूजितः ।। 3.35.
Jaigishavya, the great yogi, by recitation and wearing it, and Agastya and also Pulastya became universally revered.
ॐ नमः शिवायेति च मस्तकं मे सदाऽवतु
May 'Om namah Shivaya' always protect my head.
ॐ ह्रीं श्रीं क्लीं शिवायेति स्वाहा नेत्रे सदाऽवतु
May 'Om hrim shrim klim Shivaya svaha' always protect my eyes.
ॐ नमः शिवाय शान्ताय स्वाहा कण्ठं सदाऽवतु
May 'Om namah Shivaya shantaya svaha' always protect my throat.
