मनोरस्तवचः श्रुत्वा राजा परमपण्डितः
Hearing the words of Manora, the king, supremely wise,
कार्त्तवीर्य्यार्जुन उवाच शोकार्तानां च वचनं न प्रशंस्यं सभासु च
Kārtavīrya Arjuna said: The words of those afflicted by grief are not to be praised in assemblies.
सुखं दुःखं भयं शोकः कलहः प्रीतिरेव च
Happiness, sorrow, fear, grief, conflict, and affection,
कालो ददाति राजत्वं कालो मृत्युं पुनर्भवम्
Time grants kingship; time brings death and rebirth.
करोति पालनं कालः कालरूपी जनार्दनः
Time performs protection; Janardana himself is the embodiment of time.
संहर्त्तुर्वाऽपि संहर्त्ता पातुः पाता च कर्मकृत् कः केन हन्यते जन्तुः कर्मणा वै विना सति
The destroyer, too, is destroyed; the protector, protected; all acts are by karma. Who is slain by whom, unless by karma?
स्रष्टा सृजति सृष्टिं च संहर्त्ता संहरेत्पुनः
The creator creates creation; the destroyer destroys again.
यस्याज्ञया वाति वातः सन्ततं भयविह्वलः 3.34.
By whose command the wind blows, ever trembling with fear,
वर्षतीन्द्रो दहत्यग्निः कालो भ्रमति भीतवत्
Indra rains, fire burns, time moves as if frightened.
वृक्षाश्च पुष्पिताः काले फलितः पल्लवान्विताः
Trees blossom in their season, bear fruit, and are adorned with tender shoots.
आविर्भूता तिरोभूता सृष्टिरेव तदाज्ञया
Manifestation and disappearance, creation itself, occur by that command.
नारायणांशो भगवाञ्जामदग्न्यो महाबलः
Bhagavān Jāmadagnya, of great strength, is a portion of Nārāyaṇa.
प्रतिज्ञा विफला तस्य न भवेत्तु कदाचन
His vow shall never be fruitless at any time.
ज्ञात्वा सर्वं भविष्यं च शरणं यामि तत्कथम्
Knowing all that is to come, I seek refuge—how should I do so?
इत्येवमुक्त्वा राजेन्द्रः समरं गन्तुमुद्यतः
Having spoken thus, O king, he prepared himself to go to battle.
शतकोटिर्नृपाणां च गजेन्द्राणां त्रिलक्षकम्
There were a hundred crore kings and three hundred thousand lordly elephants.
अश्वानां च गजानां च पदातीनां तथैव च
There were also horses, elephants, and foot soldiers in great numbers.
बभूव स्तिमिता साध्वी दृष्ट्वा तं गमनोन्मुखम् । धृतवन्तं च सन्नाहमक्षयं सशरं धनुः ।। 3.34.
The noble lady stood motionless, seeing him ready to depart, bearing his unfailing armor and bow with arrows.
क्रीडागारे क्षणं तस्थौ कृत्वा कान्तं स्ववक्षसि
She remained for a moment in the pleasure chamber, holding her beloved to her breast.
नारायण उवाच भविष्यं मनसा चक्रे यद्यत्स्वामिमुखाच्छुतम्
Nārāyaṇa said: He contemplated in his mind all that he had heard from his master about the future.
पुत्रांश्च पुरतः हृत्वा बान्धवांश्च स्वकिंकरान्
He gathered his sons before him, along with his relatives and attendants.
योगेन भित्त्वा षट्चक्रं वायुं संस्थाप्य मूर्द्धनि
By yoga, he pierced the six chakras and established the breath at the crown of the head.
स्वान्तमाकृष्य विषयाज्जलबुद्बुदसन्निभात्
He drew his mind away from sense objects, which are like water bubbles.
द्विविधं कर्म संन्यस्य निर्मूलमपुनर्भवम्
He renounced both kinds of action, rootless and leading to no rebirth.
स राजा तां मृतां दृष्ट्वा विललाप रुरोद च
That king, seeing her dead, lamented and wept.
राजोवाच सचेतना मां पश्येति विलपन्तं मुहुमुर्हुः
The king said: 'See me, conscious, as I lament again and again.'
मनोरमे समुत्तिष्ठ मया सार्द्धं गृहं व्रज
'O lovely one, arise! Come home with me.'
मनोरमे समुत्तिष्ठ श्रीशैलं व्रज सुन्दरि
'O lovely one, arise! Go to Śrīśaila, O beautiful one.'
मनोरमे समुत्तिष्ठ व्रज गोदावरीं प्रिये 3.35.
'O lovely one, arise! Go to the Godāvarī, dear one.'
मनोरमे समुत्तिष्ठ नन्दनं व्रज सुन्दरि
'O lovely one, arise! Go to Nandana, O beautiful one.'
