मनोरमोवाच प्राणातिरेक प्राणेश शृणु वाक्यं शुभावहम्
Manorama spoke: ‘O lord of life, greater than life itself, listen to these words that bring auspiciousness.’
नारायणांशो भगवाञ्जामदग्न्यो महाबली
The blessed son of Jamadagni, mighty in strength, is a portion of Narayana.
त्रिःसप्तकृत्वो निर्भूपां करिष्यामि महीमिति
He has said, ‘I will rid the earth of kings twenty-one times.’
पापिनं रावणं जित्वा शूरं त्वमपि मन्यसे
Having conquered the sinful Ravana, you consider yourself a hero.
यो न रक्षति धर्म्मं च तस्य को रक्षिता भुवि
Who on earth will protect the one who does not uphold dharma?
शुभाशुभस्य सततं साक्षी धर्म्मस्य कर्मणः
Dharma is ever the witness to all good and evil deeds.
पुत्रदारादिकं यद्यत्सर्वैश्वर्य्यं सुधर्मिणाम्
Whatever sons, wives, and all prosperity belong to the truly righteous,
संसारं स्वप्नसदृशं मत्वा सन्तोऽत्र भारते
The wise in this world, O Bharata, regard worldly existence as like a dream.
दत्तेन दत्तं यज्ज्ञानं तत्सर्वं विस्मृतं त्वया 3.34.
All the knowledge given by gifts and sacrifices has been forgotten by you.
सुखार्थे मृगयां गत्वा तत्रोपोष्य द्विजाश्रमे
Seeking pleasure, you went hunting and stayed at the hermitage of the twice-born.
गुरु विप्रसुराणां च यः करोति पराभवम्
He who brings defeat to his guru, a brahmin, or the gods,
स्मरणं कुरु राजेन्द्र दत्तात्रेयपदाम्बुजम्
O king of kings, remember the lotus feet of Dattatreya.
गुरुदेवं समभ्यर्च्य तं भृगुं शरणं व्रज
Having duly worshipped the guru, take refuge in Bhrigu.
विप्रस्य किंकरो भूपो वैश्यो भूपस्य भूमिप
O king, the king is the servant of the brahmin, and the vaishya is the servant of the king.
अयशः शरणं शश्वत्क्षत्रियस्य च क्षत्रिये
For a kshatriya, disgrace is the eternal refuge among kshatriyas.
ब्राह्मणं भज राजेन्द्र गरीयांसं सुरादपि
O king of kings, honor the brahmin, who is greater even than the gods.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा राजेन्द्रं क्रोडे कृत्वा महासती
Having spoken thus, the great and virtuous lady embraced the king.
चन्दनागुरुकस्तूरीकर्पूरैः कुंकुमैर्युतम् 3.34.
With sandalwood, aloe, musk, camphor, and saffron blended together,
क्षणं सिंहासने तिष्ठ क्षणं वक्षसि मे प्रभो
Sit for a moment on the throne, O Lord; for a moment, rest upon my chest.
शतपुत्राधिकः प्रेम्णा सतीनां वै पतिर्नृप
O king, the husband of the virtuous women, by love, surpasses even one with a hundred sons.
मनोरस्तवचः श्रुत्वा राजा परमपण्डितः
Hearing the words of Manora, the king, supremely wise,
कार्त्तवीर्य्यार्जुन उवाच शोकार्तानां च वचनं न प्रशंस्यं सभासु च
Kārtavīrya Arjuna said: The words of those afflicted by grief are not to be praised in assemblies.
सुखं दुःखं भयं शोकः कलहः प्रीतिरेव च
Happiness, sorrow, fear, grief, conflict, and affection,
कालो ददाति राजत्वं कालो मृत्युं पुनर्भवम्
Time grants kingship; time brings death and rebirth.
करोति पालनं कालः कालरूपी जनार्दनः
Time performs protection; Janardana himself is the embodiment of time.
संहर्त्तुर्वाऽपि संहर्त्ता पातुः पाता च कर्मकृत् कः केन हन्यते जन्तुः कर्मणा वै विना सति
The destroyer, too, is destroyed; the protector, protected; all acts are by karma. Who is slain by whom, unless by karma?
स्रष्टा सृजति सृष्टिं च संहर्त्ता संहरेत्पुनः
The creator creates creation; the destroyer destroys again.
यस्याज्ञया वाति वातः सन्ततं भयविह्वलः 3.34.
By whose command the wind blows, ever trembling with fear,
वर्षतीन्द्रो दहत्यग्निः कालो भ्रमति भीतवत्
Indra rains, fire burns, time moves as if frightened.
वृक्षाश्च पुष्पिताः काले फलितः पल्लवान्विताः
Trees blossom in their season, bear fruit, and are adorned with tender shoots.
