तैलाभ्यङ्गितमात्मानमपश्यं गर्दभोपरि
I saw myself, anointed with oil, upon a donkey.
रक्तवस्त्रपरीधानं लोहालङ्कारभूषितम्
Clad in red garments, adorned with iron ornaments.
भस्माच्छन्नां च पृथिवीं जपापुष्पान्वितां सति
And the earth covered with ashes, yet bearing hibiscus flowers.
मुक्तकेशां च नृत्यन्तीं विधवां छिन्ननासिकाम्
A widow, with loose hair, dancing, her nose cut off.
सशरामग्निरहितां चितां भस्मसमन्विताम्
A funeral pyre, without arrows or fire, covered with ashes.
पक्व तालफलाकीर्णां पृथिवीमस्थिसंयुताम्
The earth strewn with ripe palmyra fruits, mingled with bones.
पर्वतं लवणानां च राशीभूतं कपर्दकम्
A mountain of salt, and a heap of cowries.
अदृशं पुष्पितं वृक्षमशोककरवीरयोः
I saw a flowering tree of ashoka and oleander.
अपश्यमम्बरात्सूर्य्यमण्डलं समम्पतद्भुवि 3.34.
I saw the solar orb falling straight down from the sky to the earth.
विकृताकारपुरुषं विकटास्यं दिगम्बरम्
A man of deformed appearance, with a monstrous face, naked.
बाला द्वादशावर्षीया वस्त्रभूषणभूषिता
A young girl, twelve years old, adorned with garments and ornaments,
आज्ञां त्वं देहि राजेन्द्र त्वद्गेहाद्यामि काननम्
O king, grant me permission; I wish to leave your house and go to the forest.
रुष्टो विप्रो मां शपते संन्यासी च तथा गुरुः
An angry brahmin curses me, as does the ascetic and also the teacher.
चञ्चलानां च गृध्राणां काकानां निकरैः सदा
By flocks of restless vultures and crows, I am constantly tormented.
पीडितं तैलयन्त्रेण भ्रामितं तैलकारिणा
Afflicted as if by an oil-press, turned by the oil-maker,
नृत्यन्ति गायकाः सर्वे गानं गायन्ति मे गृहे
All the singers dance, singing songs in my house.
रमणं कुर्वतो लोकान्केशाकेशि च कुर्वतः
Engaged in sensual pleasures with people, and entangled hair with hair,
मोटकानि च पिण्डानि श्मशानं शवसंयुतम्
Lumps of food and balls, and a cremation ground filled with corpses,
कृष्णाम्बरा कृष्णवर्णा नग्ना वै मुक्तकेशिनी ।। 3.34.
Clad in black garments, dark in complexion, naked, with loose hair.
नापितो मुण्डते मुण्डं श्मश्रुश्रेणीं च मे प्रिये
No barber shaves my head or the rows of my beard, dear one.
पादुका चर्मरज्जूनामपश्यं राशिमुल्बणम्
I saw a heap of sandals made from leather straps.
वात्यया घूर्णमानं च शुष्कवृक्षं तमुत्थितम्
A dry tree, swaying in the wind, stood there.
ग्रथितां मुण्डमालां च चूर्णमानां च वात्यया
A garland of skulls was strung together, being scattered by the wind.
भूतप्रेता मुक्तकेशा वमन्तश्व हुताशनम्
Spirits and ghosts with loose hair, vomiting fire,
दग्धजीवं दग्धवृक्षं व्याधिग्रस्तं नरं परम्
A living being burned, a tree burned, and a man severely afflicted by disease.
गेहपर्वतवृक्षाणां सहसा पतनं परम्
Sudden collapse of houses, mountains, and trees.
कुक्कुराणां शृगालानां रोदनं च मुहुर्मुहुः
The repeated howling of dogs and jackals.
अधश्शिरस्तूर्द्ध्वपादं मुक्तकेशं दिगम्बरम्
With head downward, feet upward, hair unbound, naked, facing the directions.
विकृताकारशब्दं च ग्रामादौ देव रोदनम् 3.34.
O god, the sound of weeping and strange cries will arise in the village and elsewhere.
नृपतेर्वचनं श्रुत्वा हृदयेन विदूयता
Hearing the king’s words, the heart is torn with pain.
