ददर्श मङ्गलं रामः शुश्राव जयसूचकम्
Rama beheld auspicious omens and heard signs foretelling victory.
यात्राकाले च पुरतः शुश्राव सहसा मुनिः
At the time of departure, the sage suddenly heard in front of him—
आकाशवाणीसंगीतं जयस्ते भवितेति च
A celestial voice singing, 'Victory shall be yours.'
चकार यात्रां भगवाञ्छ्रुत्वैवं विविधं शुभम्
Having heard such various auspicious signs, the blessed one set out on his journey.
ज्वलत्प्रदीपं दधतीं पतिपुत्रवतीं सतीम्
He saw a chaste woman, devoted to her husband and sons, carrying a burning lamp.
शिवं शिवां पूर्णकुम्भं चाषं च नकुलं तथा
He saw Shiva, Parvati, a full water-pot, a myna bird, and a mongoose as well.
कृष्णसारं गजं सिंहं तुरगं गण्डकं द्विपम्
He saw a black antelope, an elephant, a lion, a horse, a river, and an island.
मयूरं खञ्जनं चैव शंखचिल्लं चकोरकम्
He saw a peacock, a wagtail, a conch-shell, and a little partridge.
सौदामनीं शक्रचापं सूर्य्यं सूर्याप्रभां शुभाम् 3.33.
He saw lightning, Indra's rainbow, the sun, and the sun's auspicious radiance.
माणिक्यं रजतं मुक्तां मणीन्द्रं च प्रवालकम्
He saw a ruby, silver, a pearl, a chief gem, and coral.
पर्णं पताकां छत्रं च दर्पणं श्वेतचामरम्
He saw a leaf, a banner, a parasol, a mirror, and a white chowrie fan.
दुग्धमाज्यं तथा पूगममृतं पायसं तथा
He saw milk, clarified butter, betel-nut, nectar, and also sweet rice pudding.
मार्ज्जारं च वृषेन्द्रं च मेषं पर्वतमूषिकम्
He saw a cat, a great bull, a ram, and a mountain mouse.
कस्तूरीं व्यजनं तोयं हरिद्रां तीर्थमृत्तिकाम्
He saw musk, a fan, water, turmeric, and sacred earth from a holy place.
मृगं वेश्यां षट्पदं च कर्पूरं पीतवाससम्
He saw a deer, a courtesan, a bee, camphor, and a person wearing yellow garments.
गोष्ठं गवां वर्त्म रम्यां गोशालां गोगतिं शुभाम्
He saw a cowshed, the path of cows, a beautiful cowshed, and the auspicious movement of cows.
ताम्रं च स्फटिकं वन्द्यं सिन्दूरं माल्यचन्दनम्
Copper, crystal, objects worthy of veneration, vermilion, garlands, and sandalwood—
सुगन्धिवायोराघ्राणं प्राप विप्राशिषं शुभाम्
He received the fragrance of sweet-smelling air and the auspicious blessing of a Brahmin.
इत्येवं मङ्गलं ज्ञात्वा प्रययौ स मुदाऽन्वितः 3.33.
Thus, knowing this as an auspicious sign, he departed, filled with joy.
पौलस्त्यतपसः स्थानं सुगन्धिमरुदन्वितम्
He reached the abode of Paulastya's austerities, filled with fragrant breezes.
सुष्वाप पुष्पशय्यायां किङ्करैः परिसेवितः
He slept well upon a bed of flowers, attended by servants.
निशातीते च स भृगुश्चारु स्वप्नं ददर्श ह
When the night had passed, that Bhrigu beheld a beautiful dream.
गजाश्वशैलप्रासादगोवृक्षफलितेषु च
He saw himself ascending elephants, horses, mountains, palaces, cows, trees laden with fruit.
आरुह्यमाणमात्मानं नौकायां चन्दनोक्षितम्
He saw himself boarding a sandalwood-perfumed boat.
विण्मूत्रोक्षितसर्वांगं वसापूयसमन्वितम्
He saw his whole body smeared with excrement and urine, covered with fat and pus.
विस्तीर्णपद्मपत्त्रैश्च स्वं ददर्श सरित्तटे
He saw himself on a riverbank, surrounded by broad lotus leaves.
भुक्तवन्तं च ताम्बूलं लभन्तं ब्राह्मणाशिषम्
He saw himself eating betel and receiving the blessings of Brahmins.
परिपक्वफलं क्षीरमुष्णान्नं शर्करान्वितम् 3.33.
He saw himself enjoying ripe fruit, milk, hot food mixed with sugar.
जलौकसा वृश्चिकेन मीनेन भुजगेन च
He saw himself with a leech, a scorpion, a fish, and a serpent.
ततो ददर्श चात्मानं मण्डलं चन्द्रसूर्य्ययोः
Then he saw himself within a circle of the moon and sun.
