भूतेन्द्रैर्वै रुद्रगणैः क्षेत्रपालैश्च वेष्टितम्
Surrounded by the lords of beings, the hosts of Rudras, and the guardians of the quarters.
तद्वामे कार्त्तिकेयं च दक्षिणे च गणेश्वरम् अंके ददर्श कान्तां तां गौरीं शैलेन्द्रकन्यकाम्
On his left, Kārttikeya; on his right, Gaṇeśvara; in his lap, he saw his beloved, Gaurī, the daughter of the mountain.
ननाम सर्वान्मूर्ध्ना च भक्त्या च परया मुदा
He bowed to all with his head, with supreme devotion and joy.
सगद्गदपदं दीनस्साश्रुनेत्रोऽतिकातरः
With faltering words, humble, with tearful eyes, exceedingly anxious.
परशुराम उवाच अक्षराक्षयबीजं च किं वा स्तौमि निरीहकम्
Paraśurāma said: What seed, imperishable and eternal, or what inactive one, shall I praise?
न योजनां कर्त्तुमीशो देवेशं स्तौमि मूढधीः
Unable to compose praise, I, of confused mind, praise the lord of gods.
वाग्बुद्धिमनसां दूरं सारात्सारं परात्परम्
Beyond speech, intellect, and mind; the essence of essences, the highest of the high.
यमाकाशमिवाद्यन्तमध्यहीनं तथाऽव्ययम्
Who, like space, is without beginning, middle, or end, and thus imperishable.
ध्यानासाध्यं दुराराध्यमतिसाध्यं कृपानिधिम्
He who is attainable through meditation, difficult to approach, yet easily reached by the compassionate.
अद्य मे सफलं जन्म जीवितं च सुजीवितम्
Today my birth has become fruitful, and my life has been well lived.
शक्रादयः सुरगणाः कलया यस्य सम्भवाः
The hosts of gods, beginning with Indra, are born from but a portion of him.
स्त्रीरूपं क्लीबरूपं च पौरुषं च बिभर्ति यः
He who assumes the forms of woman, eunuch, and man.
यं भास्करस्वरूपं च शशिरूपं हुताशनम्
He who is the form of the sun, the moon, and fire.
अनन्तविश्वसृष्टीनां संहर्तारं भयंकरम्
He who is the fearsome destroyer of countless worlds.
यः कालः कालकालश्च कलिर्बीजं च कालजः
He who is Time, the death of Time, the Kali age, and the seed born of Time.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा स भृगुः पपात चरणाम्बुजे
Having spoken thus, Bhrigu fell at his lotus feet.
जामदग्न्यकृतं स्तोत्रं यः पठेद्भक्तिसंयुतः
Whoever recites this hymn composed by Jamadagni's son, with devotion,
शंकर उवाच किं वा तेऽहं करिष्यामि वाञ्छितं वद साम्प्रतम्
Śaṅkara said: Tell me now, what do you wish me to do for you?
पार्वत्युवाच वयसाऽतिशिशुं शान्तं गुणेन गुणिनां वरम्
Pārvatī said: Though a mere child in age, he is calm and the best among the virtuous by his qualities.
] भृगुरुवाच रेणुकाऽम्बा मे परशुरामोऽहं नामतः प्रभो
Bhrigu said: O Lord, I am Paraśurāma by name, son of Reṇukā.
क्रीणीहि मां दयासिन्धो विद्यापण्येन किंकरम्
Purchase me, O ocean of mercy, as a servant in exchange for knowledge.
मृगयामागतं भूपं पिता मे चोपवासिनम्
My father, the king, had come for hunting and was observing a fast.
राजा तं कपिलालोभाद्घातयामास मन्दधीः
The foolish king, out of greed for the tawny cow, killed him.
माताऽनुगमनं चक्रे ह्यनाथोऽहं च साम्प्रतम्
My mother followed after him, and now I am orphaned.
मया कृता प्रतिज्ञा च शोकेनैवातिदुष्करा
I made a vow, extremely difficult due to grief.
कार्तवीर्य्यं हनिष्यामि समरे तातघातकम्
I will slay Kārtavīrya in battle, the killer of my father.
ब्राह्मणस्य वचः श्रुत्वा दृष्ट्वा दुर्गामुखं हरः
Hearing the words of the brāhmaṇa and seeing Durgā's face, Hara (Śiva) —
पार्वत्युवाच त्रिस्सप्तकृत्वः कोपेन साहसस्ते महान्बटो
Pārvatī said: 'Thrice seven times, in anger, you have undertaken this great boldness, O brāhmaṇa.'
हन्तुमिच्छसि निःशस्त्रः सहस्रार्जुनमीश्वरम्
You wish to slay the lord of a thousand Arjunas, though you are without weapons.
तस्मै प्रदत्तं दत्तेन श्रीहरेः कवचं बटो
To him was given, by Dattātreya, the armor of Śrī Hari, O brāhmaṇa.
