कृष्णेन ब्रह्मणे दत्ता ब्रह्मणा भृगवे पुरा
That which was given by Krishna to Brahma, and by Brahma to Bhrigu in ancient times.
नत्वा च कामधेनूनां समूहं सा जगाम ह
Having bowed to the assembly of wish-fulfilling cows, she departed.
अथ राजा तं निहत्य बोधयित्वा स्वसैन्यकम्
Then the king, having slain him, encouraged his own army.
प्राणनाथं मृतं श्रुत्वा जगाम रेणुका सती
Hearing that her beloved was dead, the faithful Renuka came.
ततः सा चेतनां प्राप्य न रुरोद पतिव्रता
Then, regaining consciousness, the devoted wife did not weep.
आजगाम भृगुस्तूर्णं क्षणाद्वै पुष्करादहो
Bhrigu quickly arrived there in a moment from Pushkara, O wonder!
दृष्ट्वा रामो मृतं तातं शोकार्तां जननीं सतीम्
Seeing his father dead and his mother, the faithful one, afflicted with grief, Rama—
विललाप भृशं तत्र हे तात जननीति च
There Rama lamented greatly, crying, 'O father! O mother!'
रेणुका राममादाय तूर्णं कृत्वा स्ववक्षसि
Renuka, taking Rama, quickly held him to her breast.
राम राम महाबाहो क्व यामि त्वां विहाय च
Rama, Rama, mighty-armed one, where shall I go, leaving you behind?
मत्प्राणाधिक हे वत्स मदीयं वचनं शृणु
O child, dearer to me than life, listen to my words.
गृहे तिष्ठ सुखं वत्स तपस्यां कुरु शाश्वतीम्
Stay happily at home, child, and perform eternal austerity.
मातुर्वचनमश्रुत्वा प्रतिज्ञां तां चकार ह
Without listening to his mother's words, he made that vow.
कार्तवीर्यं हनिष्यामि लीलया क्षत्रियाधमम्
I will slay Kartavirya, the lowest of Kshatriyas, with ease.
इत्युदीर्य्य पुरो मातुर्विललाप मुहुर्मुहुः
Having spoken thus, he lamented repeatedly before his mother.
राम उवाच यो न हन्ति महामूढो रौरवं स व्रजेद् ध्रुवम्
Rama said: The great fool who does not kill shall surely go to Raurava.
सततं मन्दकारी च निन्दकः कटुजल्पकः
One who is always sluggish, a reviler, and speaks harshly—
द्विजानां द्रविणादानं स्थानान्निर्वासनं सति
Taking wealth from Brahmins, and expelling them from their place—
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे तत्र चाजगाम भृगुः स्वयम्
Meanwhile, Bhrigu himself arrived there.
दृष्ट्वा तं रेणुकारामौ विनतौ संबभूवतुः
Seeing Renuka and Rama, both bowed in reverence.
भृगुरुवाच जलबुद्बुदवत्सर्वं संसारे च चराचरम्
Bhrigu said: All things, both moving and unmoving in the world, are like bubbles in water.
सत्यसारं सत्यबीजं कृष्णं चिन्तय पुत्रक
Think upon Krishna, who is the essence of truth and the seed of truth, O child.
यद्भवेत्तद्भवत्येव भविता यद्भविष्यति
Whatever is to be, surely comes to be; whatever will be, will indeed happen.
भूतं भव्यं भविष्यं च यत्कृष्णेन निरूपितम्
Past, present, and future—all are determined by Krishna.
मायाबीजं मायिनां च शरीरं पाञ्चभौतिकम्
The seed of illusion, and the bodies of the illusionists, are composed of the five elements.
क्षुधा निद्रा दया शान्तिः क्षमा कान्त्यादयस्तथा
Hunger, sleep, compassion, peace, patience, beauty, and so forth—
बुद्धिश्च शक्तयः सर्वा राजेन्द्रमिव किंकराः
Intellect and all powers serve like attendants to a king.
के वा केषां च पितरः के वा केषां सुताः सुत
Who are the fathers of whom, and who are the sons of whom, O son?
ज्ञानिनो मा रुदन्त्येव मा रोदीः पुत्र साम्प्रतम्
The wise do not weep; do not weep now, my child.
संकेताख्योच्चारणेन यद्रुदन्ति च बान्धवाः पार्थिवांशं च पृथिवी गृह्णात्यस्थित्वचादिकम्
When relatives weep at the utterance of a sign or name, the earth takes back its earthly portion, such as bones and flesh.
