राजेन्द्राणां सहस्रं च महाबलपराक्रमम्
There were a thousand kings, possessing great strength and valor.
सर्वतो वेष्टयामास जमदग्न्याश्रमं मुदा
They joyfully surrounded the hermitage of Jamadagni from all sides.
सैन्यशब्दैर्वाद्यशब्दैर्महाकोलाहलैर्मुने
With sounds of armies, musical instruments, and great uproar, O sage.
कुटीं प्रविश्य बलवान्गृहीत्वा कपिलां शुभाम्
Entering the hut, the powerful one seized the auspicious Kapila cow.
समुत्तस्थौ मुनिश्रेष्ठो गृहीत्वा सशरं धनुः
The foremost sage arose, taking up his bow with arrows.
आश्रमस्थाञ्जनान्सर्वान्समाश्वास्य च यत्नतः
He carefully reassured all the people in the hermitage.
निर्ममे शरजालं च स मुनिर्मन्त्रपूर्वकम्
The sage created a web of arrows, preceded by mantras.
अपरं शरजालं च निर्ममे मुनिपुङ्गवः
The eminent sage created another web of arrows.
मुनिना शरजालेन सर्वसैन्यं समावृतम्
By the sage, the entire army was enveloped in a shower of arrows.
राजा दृष्ट्वा मुनिश्रेष्ठमवरुह्य रथात्पुरः
Seeing the best of sages, the king descended from his chariot before him.
नत्वाऽऽरुरोह यानं स मुनेः प्राप्य शुभाशिषः
Having bowed, he ascended his vehicle after receiving the sage’s auspicious blessings.
नृपैः सार्द्धं नृपश्रेष्ठश्चिक्षेप मुनिपुङ्गवे मुनिश्चिक्षेप दिव्यास्त्रं चिच्छिदे लीलया नृपः
Together with the other kings, the foremost king hurled weapons at the eminent sage; but the sage, with a divine missile, effortlessly destroyed them, and the king too.
शूलं चिक्षेप नृपतिस्तञ्जघान तदा मुनिः
The king hurled a spear, which the sage then struck down.
शस्त्रौघैर्दुर्निवार्य्यैश्च खण्डं खण्डं चकार च सः
With an unstoppable torrent of weapons, he shattered them all to pieces.
जृम्भणास्त्रेण मुनिना ते च सर्वे विजृम्भिताः
By the sage’s yawning weapon, all of them were made to yawn.
राजानं निद्रितं दृष्ट्वा न जघान मुनीश्वरः बोधयित्वा पुरः कृत्वा स्वाश्रमं गन्तुमुद्यतः
Seeing the king asleep, the lord of sages did not slay him; after awakening him and bringing him forward, he prepared to return to his hermitage.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे राजा चेतनां प्राप्य नारद
Meanwhile, O Nārada, the king regained consciousness.
जगाम कपिला त्रस्ता स्वस्थानं च रणाजिरात्
Kapilā, terrified, left the battlefield and returned to her own place.
ब्रह्मास्त्रं च नृपश्रेष्ठः स चिक्षेप मुनौ तदा
Then the foremost king hurled the Brahmāstra at the sage.
दिव्यास्त्रेण मुनिश्रेष्ठो नृपस्य सशरं धनुः
With a divine missile, the best of sages destroyed the king’s bow along with its arrow.
अथ राजा महाक्रुद्धो ददर्श स्वसमीपतः
Then the king, greatly enraged, saw near him—
जग्राह नत्वा दत्तं तं स नत्वा शक्तिमुल्बणाम्
He took up, after bowing, that formidable spear which had been given to him.
यत्तेजः सर्वदेवानां तेजो नारायणस्य च
That energy which belongs to all the gods, and the energy of Nārāyaṇa as well—
तत्रैवावाहयामास स योगी मन्त्रपूर्वकम्
There itself, the yogi invoked it with proper mantras.
दृष्ट्वा क्षिपन्तीं तां देवा हाहाकारेण चुक्रुशुः
Seeing her hurling it, the gods cried out in distress.
चिक्षेप तां चूर्णयित्वा कार्तवीर्य्यार्जुनः स्वयम्
Kārtavīrya Arjuna himself hurled it, shattering it to pieces.
विदार्य्योरो मुनेः शक्तिर्जगाम हरिसन्निधिम्
The energy of the sage Vidarīyya departed and went into the presence of Hari.
मूर्च्छां सम्प्राप्य स मुनिः प्राणांस्तत्याज तत्क्षणम्
Falling into unconsciousness, that sage at that very moment gave up his life.
युद्धे मुनिं मृतं दृष्ट्वा रुरोद कपिला मुहुः
Seeing the sage dead in battle, Kapila wept again and again.
सर्वं सा कथयामास गोलोके कृष्णमीश्वरम्
She went to Goloka and told everything to Krishna, the Lord.
