मुनिः शुभाशिषं दत्त्वा राजानं त्वालिलिङ्ग सः
The sage, having given auspicious blessings, embraced the king.
नवनीतं हि हृदयं ब्राह्मणानां तु सन्ततम् उवाच तं मुनिश्रेष्ठो गृहं गच्छ धराधिप
Indeed, the hearts of Brahmins are always like fresh butter; the eminent sage said to him, 'Go home, O lord of the earth.'
इति श्रीब्रह्मवैवर्त्ते महापुराणे तृतीये गणपतिखण्डे नारदनारायणसंवादे जमदग्निकार्तवीर्यार्जुनयुद्धवर्णनं नाम पञ्चविंशोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the great Purāṇa called the Brahmavaivarta, in the third section, the Gaṇapati-khaṇḍa, in the dialogue between Nārada and Nārāyaṇa, the twenty-fifth chapter named 'The Description of the Battle between Jamadagni and Kārtavīryārjuna' concludes.
नारायण उवाच हितं सत्यं नीतिसारं प्रवक्तुसुपचक्रमे
Nārāyaṇa said: I shall now begin to speak of what is beneficial, true, and the essence of ethics.
मुनिरुवाच सर्वसम्पत्स्थिरा शश्वत्स्थिते धर्मे सुनिश्चितम्
The sage said: All prosperity is stable and everlasting when dharma is firmly established.
त्वां च दृष्ट्वा निराहारं समानीय गृहं नृप । साम्प्रतं मूर्छितं दृष्ट्वा पादरेणुं शुभाशिषम्
And seeing you without food, the king brought you to his house; now, seeing you unconscious, he offered the dust of his feet with auspicious blessings.
नृपस्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा प्रणम्य मुनिपुंगवम्
Hearing those words, the king bowed to the foremost of sages.
मुनिः कृत्वा च सन्नाहं तं योद्धुमुपचक्रमे
The sage, having put on his armor, prepared to fight him.
कपिलादत्तशस्त्रेण न्यस्तशस्त्रं चकार तम्
With the weapon given by Kapila, he rendered him weaponless.
पुनश्च चेतनां प्राप्य राजा राजीवलोचनः
Regaining consciousness again, the lotus-eyed king—
आग्नेयं योजयामास समरे नृपपुंगवः
The foremost of kings employed the fire missile in battle.
नृपेन्द्रो वारुणास्त्रं च चिक्षेप समरे मुनौ
The lord of kings hurled the Varuṇa missile at the sage in battle.
वायव्यास्त्रं नृपश्रेष्ठश्चिक्षेप समरे तदा
Then, the best of kings released the Vāyu missile in the battle.
नागास्त्रं च नृपश्रेष्ठश्चिक्षेप रणमूर्द्धनि
The best of kings also hurled the Nāga missile at the head of the battlefield.
माहेश्वरं महास्त्रं च शतसूर्य्यसमप्रभम्
He used the great Maheśvara missile, radiant as a hundred suns.
वैष्णवास्त्रेण दिव्येन त्रिलोकव्यापकेन च
With the divine Vaiṣṇava missile, pervading the three worlds—
मुनिर्नारायणास्त्रं च चिक्षिपे मन्त्रपूर्वकम्
The sage, with proper mantras, released the Nārāyaṇa missile.
ऊर्ध्वं च भ्रमणं कृत्वा क्षणं दीप्त्वा दिशो दश
After whirling upward and blazing in all ten directions for a moment—
जृम्भणास्त्रं च स मुनिश्चिक्षेप रणमूर्द्धनि
The sage also released the Jṛmbhaṇa missile at the head of the battlefield.
दृष्ट्वा नृपं निद्रितं तं चार्द्धचन्द्रेण तत्क्षणम्
Seeing the king lying asleep, with the Arddhacandra weapon, at that very moment—
मुकुटं च क्षुरप्रेण च्छत्रं सन्नाहमेव च
He cut off the crown, the umbrella, and the armor with a razor-sharp weapon.
मुनिस्तत्सचिवान्सर्वान्नागास्त्रेणैव लीलया
The sage, along with all his companions, effortlessly subdued them with the serpent weapon.
मुनिस्तं बोधयामास सुमन्त्रेणैव लीलया
The sage awakened him, using the mantra of Sumantu, with ease.
दर्शयित्वा नृपं तांश्च मोचयामास तत्क्षणम्
After showing the king and his men, he released them at that very moment.
राजा कोपात्समुत्थाय शूलमुद्यम्य यत्नतः
The king, rising in anger, carefully raised his spear.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे ब्रह्मा समागत्य रणस्थलम्
Meanwhile, Brahma arrived at the battlefield.
मुनिर्ननाम ब्रह्माणं सन्तुष्टश्च रणस्थले
The sage bowed to Brahma, who was pleased on the battlefield.
मुनिर्ययौ स्वाश्रमं च स्व लोकं कमलोद्भवः
The sage departed for his own hermitage, and Kamalodbhava returned to his own realm.
नारायण उवाच आजगाम महारण्ये जमदग्न्याश्रमं पुनः
Nārāyaṇa said: He again came to the hermitage of Jamadagni in the great forest.
रथानां च चतुर्लक्षं रथिनां दशलक्षकम्
There were four hundred thousand chariots and one million charioteers.
