ब्रह्मणा भृगवे दत्ता प्रियपुत्राय भूमिप
Given by Brahma to Bhrigu, his beloved son, O king—
गोलोकजा कामधेनुर्दुर्लभा भुवनत्रये
The wish-fulfilling cow, born in Goloka, is rare in the three worlds.
नाहं रे हालिको मूढस्तुत्या नोत्थापितो बुधः
I am not, O foolish ploughman, a fool raised up by praise.
गृहं गच्छ गृहं गच्छ मे कोपं नैव वर्द्धय
Go home, go home; do not increase my anger.
मुनेस्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा चुकोप स नराधिपः
Hearing the sage’s words, the king became angry.
गत्वा सैन्यसकाशं स कोपप्रस्फुरिताधरः
He went to his army, his lips trembling with rage.
कपिलासन्निधिं गत्वा रुरोद मुनिपुंगवः
Having gone to the presence of Kapila, the foremost sage wept.
रुदन्तं ब्राह्मणं दृष्ट्वा सुरभिस्तमुवाच ह
Seeing the brahmin weeping, Surabhi spoke to him.
सुरभिरुवाच शास्ता पालयिता दाता स्ववस्तूनां च सन्ततम्
Surabhi said: The ruler, the protector, the giver is always of his own possessions.
स्वेच्छया चेन्नृपेन्द्राय मां ददासि तपोधन
If, O possessor of austerity, you give me to the king by your own will,
अथवा न ददासि त्वं न गमिष्यामि ते गृहात्
Otherwise, if you do not give, I will not leave your house.
कथं रोदिषि सर्वज्ञ मायामोहितचेतनः
Why do you weep, O all-knowing one, whose mind is deluded by illusion?
त्वं वा को मे तवाहं का सम्बन्धः कालयोजितः
Who are you to me, or who am I to you? What connection is there, arranged by time?
मनो जानाति यद्द्रव्यमात्मीयं चेति केवलम्
The mind alone determines what is one's own and what is not.
इत्युक्त्वा कामधेनुश्च सुषाव विविधानि च
Having spoken thus, Kāmadhenu produced various things.
निर्गताः कपिलावक्त्रात्त्रिकोट्यः खड्गधारिणाम्
From Kapila's mouth emerged thirty million sword-bearers.
विनिस्सृता लोचनाभ्यां शतकोटिधनुर्द्धरा
From her eyes issued a hundred billion bowmen.
वक्षस्स्थलान्निस्सृताश्च त्रिकोट्यश्शक्तिधारिणाम्
From her chest emerged thirty million spear-bearers.
विनिस्सृताः पादतलाद्वाद्यभाण्डाः सहस्रशः
From the soles of her feet, thousands of musical instruments came forth.
विनिर्गता गुह्यदेशात्त्रिकोटिम्लेच्छजातयः।। दत्त्वा सैन्यानि कपिला मुनये चाभयं ददौ। युद्धं कुर्वन्तु सैन्यानि त्वं न याहीत्युवाच ह
From her secret place emerged thirty million tribes of barbarians; having given armies, Kapila granted the sage safety, saying, 'Let the armies fight; you do not go.'
मुनिः सम्भूतसम्भारैर्हर्षयुक्तो बभूव ह
The sage became filled with joy at the assembled forces that had appeared.
कपिलासैन्यवृत्तान्तमात्मवर्गपराजयम् दूतान्त्संप्रेष्य सैन्यानि चाजहार स्वदेशतः
He sent messengers with news of Kapila's army and his own defeat, and withdrew his forces from his land.
नारायण उवाच दूतं प्रस्थापयामास कुपितो मुनिसन्निधिम्
Nārāyaṇa said: Angered, he sent a messenger to the sage's presence.
युद्धं देहि मुनिश्रेष्ठ किं वा धेनुं च वाञ्छिताम्
Give battle, O best of sages, or else the desired cow.
दूतस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा जहास मुनिपुंगवः
Hearing the messenger's words, the eminent sage laughed.
मुनिरुवाच विविधं च यथाशक्त्या भोजितश्च यथोचितम्
The sage spoke: 'Various things have been offered according to ability, and hospitality has been shown as appropriate.'
कपिलां याचते राजा मम प्राणाधिकां प्रियाम्
The king requests my beloved Kapila, who is dearer to me than life itself.
मुनेस्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा दूतः सर्वमुवाच ह
Hearing the sage's words, the messenger conveyed everything.
मुनिश्च कपिलामाह साम्प्रतं किङ्करोम्यहम्
The sage said to Kapila, 'Now, what should I do?'
कपिला च ददौ तस्मै शस्त्राणि विविधानि च
Kapila gave him various weapons.
